BTL Radio Show – 11/02/2026 with director MARK VANSELOW discussing THE MONGOOSE

As promised, this week BEHIND THE LENS is all about THE MONGOOSE.  A terrific action film starring Liam Neeson that is directed by his longtime stunt double, MARK VANSELOW, who makes his directorial debut with this film.  Mark has directed second unit on films before, in addition to being stunt coordinator and doing stunts, but this is his first feature directorial, and boy does he knock it out of the park!!

Mark Vanselow is taking audiences on one hell of a ride with THE MONGOOSE, a high-octane action thriller that delivers everything one could want from a Liam Neeson movie and then some. Spectacular practical stunts, exhilarating car chases, helicopters, explosions, and a Shelby Cobra that deserves its own screen credit are just the beginning. What sets THE MONGOOSE apart, though, is the emotional story driving the action, a story of brotherhood, loyalty, guilt, and the lasting scars of war. And making his feature directorial debut, Vanselow proves himself a formidable storyteller who understands that the best action isn’t simply about spectacle. It’s about giving that spectacle purpose.

As I said, a longtime stuntman, stunt coordinator, second-unit director, and Neeson’s former stunt double, Mark brings decades of practical filmmaking experience to THE MONGOOSE. That experience is evident in every chase, every stunt, every precisely choreographed piece of vehicular mayhem. But equally impressive is his command of the film’s emotional and visual language, allowing the story to unfold through imagery, performance, sound, and editing rather than relying solely on exposition.

In THE MONGOOSE, Neeson stars as Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a decorated military veteran accused of a crime he didn’t commit. With law enforcement pursuing him across the country, Fang takes to the road in a Shelby Cobra, determined to stay ahead of capture while confronting a past that refuses to remain buried. As the pursuit intensifies, fellow veterans rally to his cause, public sentiment begins to shift, and the chase becomes something far more consequential than one man’s attempt to evade arrest.  Joining Neeson on this fast and furious adventure are  Marisa Tomei, Ving Rhames, Marcus Thomas, Maurice Marvel Meredith and Michael Chiklis, just to name a few.

In this exclusive interview, Mark and I break down the film and the multiple cinematic disciplines – including practical stunts – but Mark also emphasizes that the film prioritizes emotional storytelling alongside kinetic action.  Highlighting the collaborative process with cinematographer Tom Stern to establish a unique visual grammar and editor Rodrigo Ballard to achieve precise pacing, our discussion covers the technical achievements of the production, including practical car-to-helicopter transfers and specialized camera pods. We celebrate the seamless integration of high-octane stunts with a meaningful narrative structure, plus the importance of portraying war veterans in this story, and the creative endurance required during post-production which is something new for Mark.

You’ll also hear about a few things that aren’t included in the written interview feature or review as publicity and producers wanted a few surprises for you on the film’s release.  And yes, by now either you’ve seen THE MONGOOSE, which opened on Friday, or you’ve seen some of the stills from the film, and I assure you that the shot of Liam Neeson climbing through the car window up to a hovering helicopter IS Liam Neeson himself doing that stunt.  And something I so appreciate is Mark giving flowers to as many of his crew as possible, so get ready to hear the names of some incredible and talented individuals who helped make THE MONGOOSE explode on screen.

THE MONGOOSE is in theatres now!
