While Adele may have the Midas touch when it comes to music, as she related backstage after her Oscar win for Skyfall, it does require a bit of work.
While Paul Epworth, co-writer of the Skyfall song boasts, “We got the first draft down in ten minutes”, Adele is quick to point out, “It was two studio sessions. It was a bit longer than that. We’re good but we’re not that good.”
As a rule, when it comes to their collaborative style, Adele will generally go to Paul with an idea and look to him in kind at which point, “[W]e just kind of throw them at each other, and if something happens, which is certainly what happened with Skyfall and Rolling in the Deep, wefre absolutely done well.” But there are those times when things might not “click” right away but take time to fall into place “like it does if I say sometimes, eIt’s a bit dry.f You just got to connect and just hope for the best.” A perfect example is Rolling in the Deep. “I cried the first time when I told Paul about my ex. . . and then Rolling in the Deep happened.
But Adele’s secret to success is very simple. ” I find [it best], really, to be really honest with whoever you’re working with or whoever you’re collaborating with, so that they get the idea.”
