In this exclusive interview, Set Decorator KATHRYN ORLANDO discusses the devil in the details of bringing multiple decades of beloved television touchstones to life in WANDAVISION.
With the release of the WANDAVISION: COLLECTOR’S EDITION in 4K Ultra HD Steelbook and Blue-ray Steelbook, some of the series master artisans, including Set Decorator KATHRYN ORLANDO, are revisiting this unique series and the thought, care, and creativity that went into the craftsmanship and storytelling.
SYNOPSIS: Marvel Studios’ captivating series WANDAVISION premiered in early 2021 on Disney+. Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, “WandaVision” marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.
The magic of WANDAVISION is most prominently displayed in the production design and set decoration. Working with production designer Mark Worthington, KATHRYN ORLANDO and her team paid homage to iconic television series of the 50s, 60, 70s, 80s, and 90s, among them “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “The Brady Bunch”, “Bewitched”, “Family Ties”, Full House”, and “Modern Family”, while also melding iconic MCU references ( for example, Hydra Soap, a Hydra Toaster, etc.) and creating a new extension of the MCU world with the introduction of Agnes/Agatha Harkness.
As you’ll hear in this exclusive interview with Kathryn, set decoration also involved working with the VFX artisans and the stunt team to create and dress sets that allowed for action and visual effects while not destroying any significant one-of-a-kind items. Color was also key given the challenges of several episodes being in black and white, as well as morphing mid-episode into color. From furniture to fabrics and everything in between, Kathryn pulls back the curtain on the devilish details of WANDAVISION.
