A fun-filled exclusive interview with writer/director RICK BIEBER discussing the oh-so-right DEAD WRONG; a crime thriller popcorn film of fun.
SYNOPSIS: A story of greed, envy, sex and murder. A narcissistic husband is not satisfied with his life and wants more. He devises a psychotic, get-rich-quick scheme with his new, gambling-addicted attorney that ignites an emotional and deadly chain reaction.
Written and directed by RICK BIEBER based on the novel “Deadly Instinct” by Kenneth Clark, DEAD WRONG boasts a strong cast, including Rob Schneider (in one of the best performances of his career), Katrina Bowden, Derek Smith, Chelsea Debo, Cress Williams, Joshua Bitton, and Chet Hanks.
A throwback to a 90s vibe, DEAD WRONG is evenly paced, balancing the edge-of-your-seat thriller aspect with some glorious lighter comedic moments, light and bright visual tonal bandwidth, and punctuating it all with judiciously implemented quick and sudden jarring violence that ups the ante of the story.
In this exclusive interview with RICK BIEBER, we dive into the “making of” DEAD WRONG and all of the elements that make it a film that is oh-so very right starting with the importance of character and tone in a crime thriller with a slightly comedic edge at times, not to mention the challenges of independent filmmaking and the need for efficient preparation and budgeting from beginning to end. Getting into specifics, we break down production considerations, not the least of which is story and character in this film, including:
- the genesis of DEAD WRONG and what drew Rick to Kenneth Clark’s crime novel; why would this make a good film
- character development and contrast among them; a unique blend of characters with personality disorders and moral codes
- performances, most notably those of Rob Schneider and Derek Smith
- navigating the complex web of characters (eight main characters) with contrasting traits both in story and in casting
- the importance of flawed characters with redeemable qualities
- working with cinematographer Thomas Callaway and creating a light and bright visual tonal bandwidth vs a noirish darker tone often associated with crime thrillers
- crafting unfettered visuals that allow for the performances to shine
- importance of character development over visual tricks in a realistic crime drama
- and more!
