Featuring special guests: Deon Taylor and Gayle Kirschenbaum.
First up is a very special guest and friend to BEHIND THE LENS – writer/director Deon Taylor. The love fest with Deon and his work began a few years ago at Los Angeles Film Festival with the powerful drama “Supremacy”. Many of you may recall Deon’s last appearances on the show talking about that film and his opining on what might be next in his cinematic future. Wonder no more as Deon is back talking about his latest film, the raucous, riotous, irreverent and uproariously funny MEET THE BLACKS! Filmmakers will be especially interested to hear what Deon has to say about the genre mash-up (“The Purge” meets iconic horror films) challenges presented from a visual standpoint with lighting, lensing, use of color, and a helpful hint on the use of smoke! And of course, as always, he has some inspiring words for all the independent filmmakers out there.
Then we go from the horror and humor of the Black family to the sometimes real life horror and definite humor and heart of the age-old battle between mothers and daughters with Gayle Kirschenbaum as she talks about her latest documentary LOOK AT US NOW, MOTHER!, a “must see” for mother and daughters everywhere! It’s a regular coffee klatch chat as Gayle talks about not only her emotional journey with the making of this documentary, but the challenges as a director, like editing down 250 hours of footage, and finding that story throughline. Some terrific insight as both a daughter and a director.
But before we get to our live guests, hear excerpts of film critic debbie elias’ exclusive interviews with Cliff Curtis, star of THE DARK HORSE, and in honor of the 2016 baseball season, documentarian Jonathan Hock talks about FASTBALL, a documentary that answers the timeless question – who pitched the fastest fast ball in the history of baseball.
