BTL Radio Show – 01/09/2023 with special guest NORA KAYE and our exclusive interview with SCOTT COOPER

BEHIND THE LENS kicks off year nine with NORA KAYE talking THE COSMOS SISTERS and our exclusive interview with SCOTT COOPER talking THE PALE BLUE EYE!  WOW!

First up for 2023 and year nine of #BTLRadioShow is our exclusive interview with award-winning writer/director SCOTT COOPER talking about his mesmerizing new film, THE PALE BLUE EYE, now on Netflix.  Adapted by Scott from the acclaimed novel of the same name by Louis Bayard, THE PALE BLUE EYE is, at its heart, an Edgar Allan Poe origin story set at West Point in the 1830s.

Steeped in metaphor and ambiance thanks to the film’s visual tonal bandwidth and exemplary visual grammar courtesy of Cooper’s frequent collaborator, cinematographer Masanobu “Masa” Takayanagi, Scott and I dig deep into discussion covering the film’s visual tonal progression and framing, use of color, and Stefania Cella’s production design which is an integral part of the film’s metaphoric style.  Truly an artisan’s showcase, listen as Scott also talks about working with editor Dylan Tichenor and the challenges of pacing twists and turns and reveals, and of course, the mystery within of Howard Shore’s stunning score.  Not to be overlooked, casting is king with THE PALE BLUE EYE starting with long-time Cooper collaborator Christian Bale, as well as the award-worthy performance of Harry Melling as a young Poe, along with Timothy Spall, Lucy Boynton, Robert Duvall, Toby Jones, Gillian Anderson, and Simon McBurney.  We break it all down and also take a shared little trip down memory lane.

Then joining us live for the second half of the show is writer/director/actor NORA KAYE talking about her new film THE COSMOS SISTERS.  Written and directed by Nora Kaye and Whitney Uland, THE COSMOS SISTERS is a fun-filled lo budget/no budget/micro-budget indie romp about two high school BFF’s and bandmates who drift apart only to come together again ten years later trying to reunite and reconnect.

As you listen to Nora, you’ll quickly discover that comedy, fun, and sticktoitiveness are in her nature, something that shines through within the film as Nora and Whitney star as “Nora” and “Whitney”.  A conversation tailored for first-time and freshman indie filmmakers, much can be learned listening to Nora as she talks about the challenges of bringing this film to life from budgeting and a pandemic to shooting location (which ended up being in her childhood home) to production design and using that to “mask” visual shortcomings while adding to camera creativity to, of course, music.  A fun film courtesy of a fun filmmaker, as you listen to Nora, I think you’ll agree with me that I can’t wait to see what Nora and Whitney bring us next.
