BTL Radio Show – 04/24/2023 with special guests CHAZ BONO and DAWN MIKKELSON

We’ve got a jam-packed #BTLRadioShow for you this week thanks to DAWN MIKKELSON and her latest documentary MINNESOTA MEAN, while CHAZ BONO talks about his new film BURY THE BRIDE, both of whom join us live!

First up, documentarian, director/editor DAWN MIKKELSON, is with us talking about her latest doc, MINNESOTA MEAN, a look inside the world of women’s roller derby through the eyes of the Minnesota All Stars as they compete to win the Hydra, the top international prize of the sport.  While giving all the team members a spotlight, the focus of the documentary primarily features six team members and their personal journeys over the course of a year as they battle injury, come to a crossroads in each of their personal lives, get incredible and enthusiastic spousal support, face the challenges and desires of motherhood, question the “what next after derby”, and so much more.  But what comes shining through is the strength and support of the female friendships among these women both on and off the track.  And yes, we even learn something about flat-track roller derby.  Dawn talks about her inspiration for what she thought would be a series but became a film, the challenges of filming and even greater challenges of editing, and more.

MINNESOTA MEAN is circling the festival circuit track. For information on upcoming festival screenings, check out https://www.minnesotameanfilm.com/.

And then CHAZ BONO is with us live to talk about his new film, a little taste of horror with BURY THE BRIDE.

Directed by Spider One and written by Krsy Fox and Spider One, in addition to Chaz, BURY THE BRIDE stars Krsy Fox, Scout Taylor-Compton, Dylan Rourke, Lyndsi LaRose, Katie Ryan, Rachel Brunner, Cameron Cowperthwaite and Adam Marcinowski in this tale of bride-to-be June’s bachelorette getaway with the girls only to turn deadly when her blood-thirsty fiancé and his backwoods friends show up to crash the party. What follows becomes a living nightmare of unholy proportions as June, her sister Sadie and their closest friends fight for their lives, and avenge the ones who don’t make it through the night.

Both an actor in the film and a producer, Chaz discusses the film at length and not only his character of “Puppy”, but the intial appeal of the project, the aspects of producing and the physical shoot itself as well as working with Spider and Krsy and his fellow castmates.  As you will hear, Chaz is very aware of the collaborative nature of a film and the importance of actors feeding off of one another in their performances to service the story.    Going beyond BURY THE BRIDE, we talk about some of his other film and television work and what he looks for in projects, with horror being at the top of the list.  A published author and activist, Chaz also discusses what he sees as his future as a producer and as a storyteller working with collaborators like Spider and Krsy,  not to mention his love of horror films and his dream project.  And yes, we do talk about the diversity issue facing productions today as well as that balancing act of  “help or a hindrance” the second generation (aka nepo baby) of famous parents.  A fascinating conversation with a wonderful young man I have long wanted to speak with. And with more projects in the fire and releasing later this year and next, I can’t wait to speak with Chaz again.

BURY THE BRIDE is available now on TUBI.
