BTL Radio Show – 05/16/2022 with special guest ZACH CARVER plus our exclusive interview with JAMES NUNN

We take to the open waters this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director ZACH CARVER who joins us live talking about his latest doc, THE RACE TO ALASKA.  And, we dive into the deep end with a bite of SHARK BAIT and our exclusive interview with one of my fave filmmakers, JAMES NUNN.

Everyone knows of my love for sharks (after all, I am known as moviesharkd), especially in film, and thankfully a new shark film hits the cinematic waters just in time for summer – SHARK BAIT!  The tale of five friends on spring break who head to the sandy beaches of Mexico for much-needed fun and partying.  On their last night, partying gets a bit out of control which leads to stealing some jet skis in the morning and heading out into the ocean for a game of chicken.  And you can just imagine how well that goes. Needless to say, spring break, stupidity, and sharks are a lethal combination.  Take a listen to this exclusive interview with director JAMES NUNN as we dive into the making of SHARK BAIT talking everything from shooting off the coast of Malta to James’ technical precision and acumen to the underwater filming (85% of the film was shot in open waters versus a tank) to sunburn to casting and more!

Then we head into the dangerous waters off the northwestern North American coast with THE RACE TO ALASKA when documentarian ZACH CARVER joins us live. A 750-mile journey from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska, the R2AK is one of the most interesting races you may ever witness – on a boat (any kind of boat – paddle boat, kayak, canoe, sail, pedals), no motors, no support. Taking a look at the last several years of the R2AK with in-race footage and interviews we meet the racers, learn about the various boats, and vicariously revel in the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and the fun of it all…and we see some of the most beautiful waterways and landscape on this earth. An interesting conversation with Zach as we talk about the race itself, how it landed on his own radar, the challenges of filming, working with individual racers who did much of their own “onboard filming” with self-interviews throughout the 750-miles, blending 4 years of races into one exciting tale, lensing challenges along the race route and capturing the beauty and harshness of Mother Nature, finding a through-line, and so much more.  I don’t know which is more fascinating – the R2AK race or Zach’s journey in making this film!
