BTL Radio Show – 07/29/2024 with special guests ERIN MACDONALD, PH.D. and JAY SILVERMAN

It’s an out-of-this-world full house on this episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to our special guests ERIN MACDONALD, PH.D. talking about SPACE CADET, STAR TREK: PRODIGY and astrophysics, and director JAY SILVERMAN talking about his beautiful new film CAMERA.

I’m so excited to have DR. ERIN MACDONALD join us to discuss her myriad of ongoing projects including serving as science consultant to the new fun Prime Video film SPACE CADET which is the story of a female protagonist who dreams of being an astronaut. And if that’s not enough, Erin not only serves as science advisor to the STAR TREK franchise, but voices her fictional counterpart in the animated STAR TREK: PRODIGY now streaming on Netflix!  Plus, she’s one of the forces behind the film IDENTITEAZE (which just happens to have John DeLancie in the cast). This is one space geek who is thrilled to speak with Erin!  And what a terrific conversation this is as Erin talks about her various projects, explains what a science advisor does on a film or tv series, what led her to astrophysics, the importance of STEAM for young girls (and boys) and so much more.  Erin is fun, enthusiastic, and so knowledgeable!

SPACE CADET is currently streaming on Prime Video!

Adding to the excitement this week is the return of director JAY SILVERMAN who is back for his third appearance on #BTLRadioshow, this time talking about his new film CAMERA. Get the tissues out for this one when you see it (it released on 7/23). Beyond heartfelt, Beau Bridges and young Miguel Gabriel will melt your heart and bring you to tears while the film’s cinematography is breathtaking with every frame. Needless to say, I love CAMERA and had a wonderful discussion with Jay about it. Digging into the film and its genesis, Jay breaks down the entire production for us from script (beautifully written by Jamie Murphy and Joe Gamache) to casting of Beau Bridges and Miguel Garcia along with Bruce Davison and Jessica Parker Kennedy, to developing visual grammar (all handheld camerawork) and visual tonal bandwidth with his cinematographer Andrew Jeric (key to a visual story), to location scouting and ultimately finding perfection with Morro Bay, to the work of production designer Zach Bangma, working with editor John Alan Thompson, to the beauty and joy of Dave Holden’s score and the musical tone Jay was seeking in the score and its instrumentation, and of course, Jay gives some terrific tips and wisdom for filmmakers.  A wonderful film.  A wonderful interview

CAMERA is now streaming on Prime Video, AppleTV+, and VUDU.
