About Cinema Phantasmagoria

Cinema Phantasmagoria is an immersive haunted theater experience with classic horror films. Guests step into a mysterious 1920’s movie palace where time stands still. Sinister ushers, strolling musicians, a demonic barber and an undead Master of Ceremonies will entertain as you hit the bar before settling in to watch a modern classic horror film. And, if you dare, take the historic VIP Backstage Ghost Tour (running every fifteen minutes throughout the night) and step into the depths of the gothic Million Dollar Theatre.

About the VIP Backstage Ghost Tour:

During a movie premiere in 1921, a mistress to a silent movie star went missing. Her name was Lily Lavender. Was it a murder? On this guided tour, explore the mystery and history of the Million Dollar Theatre.

About the Million Dollar Theater:

Opened on February 1st, 1918 by Sid Grauman as Grauman’s Theatre (his first in Los Angeles) with a star-studded premiere of “The Silent Man” starring William S. Hart, who was there for the festivities. Other stars attending the opening included Lillian Gish, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Wallace Reid, Edna Purviance, and Constance Talmadge. Directors attending included Cecil B. DeMille, D.W. Griffith, Thomas Ince and Mack Sennett. The building was listed on the National Register in 1978.

It was referred to in early ads as Grauman’s Million Dollar Theatre. It had evidently cost something more than that sum for the land, the office building, the theatre, and the furnishings. Architect Albert C. Martin (1879-1960) designed the 60,000 square foot building with the exterior in an opulent Churrigueresque style. William Lee Woollett designed the theatre. Most of the exterior sculpture was by Joseph Mora but some work at the theatre entrance was by Woollett.
