{"id":10052,"date":"2014-11-17T13:54:52","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T21:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=10052"},"modified":"2014-11-17T13:54:52","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T21:54:52","slug":"tommy-lee-jones-on-the-homesman-we-were-very-lucky-to-find-lumpkin-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/interviews\/tommy-lee-jones-on-the-homesman-we-were-very-lucky-to-find-lumpkin-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Tommy Lee Jones on THE HOMESMAN: &#8220;We were very lucky to find Lumpkin, Georgia&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unless you\u2019ve been there, as I have, and seen all of its natural and historic beauty, Lumpkin, Georgia is not a place many would think to shoot a movie, but in the case of Tommy Lee Jones\u2019 \u201cThe Homesman\u201d, Lumpkin was perfection.<\/p>\n<p>While many films like \u201cWe Were Soldiers\u201d, \u201cThe General\u2019s Daughter\u201d and \u201cThe Green Berets, as well as documentaries and television shows such as \u201cM*A*S*H\u201d and \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d, have taken advantage of Ft. Benning in nearby Columbus, Georgia, and even next door neighbor Omaha, Georgia with \u201cThe Long Riders\u201d, Lumpkin has remained somewhat of a foreign land to filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p><div \/>\nJust prior to World War I, Fox Studios saw the potential for moviemaking in Lumpkin County and its community of Dahlonega.\u00a0 With the benefit of what is now the\u00a0 Chattahoochee National Forest, the pristine waters of the Hannahatchee Creek and Chattahoochee River, and the old brick buildings that came to prominence in the 1830&#8217;s, Fox felt the region had \u201can old west\u201d look to it.\u00a0 Unfortunately, after making just three films, among them, \u201cThe Plunderer\u201d, Fox packed up its trucks and talent and left Lumpkin County.\u00a0 \u201cThe Plunderer\u201d, the most well known of the three films to be shot by Fox in the region, celebrated the early gold mining hopes in Georgia and Lumpkin itself and was the fictional tale of a mine called \u201cThe Cross of Gold\u201d and its owner.\u00a0 In 2005, Hollywood again returned to Lumpkin, this time to historic Westville, for the filming of Tim Sullivan\u2019s horror comedy, \u201c2001 Maniacs\u201d, starring Robert Englund.\u00a0 But beyond that, but for a local short film or two, Lumpkin has remained virtually untouched by Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cThe Homesman\u201d may change all that for the quiet little county and its historic towns, especially Westville.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-12-lumpkin.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-l9JgX6PL\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10032\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-12-lumpkin-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"the homesman - 12 - lumpkin\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-12-lumpkin-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-12-lumpkin.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A film whose cinematography is a breathtaking story unto itself, Jones and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, were challenged to find the right shooting locations.\u00a0 As Jones told me, \u201cIt\u2019s a journey eastward, and the destination looked a lot different than the origin.\u201d\u00a0 Starting a journey in what is supposed to be the 1850&#8217;s plains of Nebraska and heading east to Iowa called for specific topography.\u00a0 \u201cI got really tired of trying to figure out how we were going to make Galisteo, New Mexico look like bosky woods.\u00a0 We thought of everything and all manner of computer-generated imaging and phony trees and it just didn\u2019t work.\u201d\u00a0 Galisteo worked fine for Nebraska as Jones and Prieto used the vast open horizon as the eyeline with wide angle panoramic lensing creating not only a beautiful visual palette but metaphorically emotional one.\u00a0 But as the physical and emotional stories journeyed ever eastward, lensing became incrementally tighter with a need for the leafy green life force of those bosky woods.\u00a0 As Jones tells it, \u201cWe were very lucky to find Lumpkin, Georgia, where some man with a considerable amount of discretionary income tried to buy every 19th century house in Georgia and Alabama, and he brought it and made it a little town and it was perfectly suited to our purposes.\u201d\u00a0 That little town is Historic Westville.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-tommy-lee-on-location-in-lumpkin.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-l9JgX6PL\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10057\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-tommy-lee-on-location-in-lumpkin-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"the homesman - tommy lee on location in lumpkin\" https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/the-homesman-tommy-lee-on-location-in-lumpkin.jpg 983w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Located at the southern end of Lumpkin, Westville is an 1850&#8217;s living history museum village comprised of approximately 30 authentically restored and furnished antebellum buildings, including a court house, a church, town square, residences and schools, and sits on 82 acres of land that includes not only the village, but fields and pastures, a tributary of the Hannahatchee Creek and those \u201cbosky woods\u201d so necessary to Tommy Lee Jones and his mandate for authenticity in \u201cThe Homesman.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe were very, very lucky to find that facility.\u00a0 Because of the contrast between Nebraska and Iowa, we wanted the end of the journey to look and feel a lot different than the beginning. . . .Lumpkin.\u00a0 It\u2019s a beautiful place.\u201d<strong><br
