{"id":10226,"date":"2014-12-07T13:19:10","date_gmt":"2014-12-07T21:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=10226"},"modified":"2014-12-07T13:19:10","modified_gmt":"2014-12-07T21:19:10","slug":"the-imitation-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/the-imitation-game\/","title":{"rendered":"THE IMITATION GAME"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you are reading this column, be it online or in print, one of the people responsible for this luxury is the very man celebrated in \u201cThe Imitation Game\u201d &#8211; Alan Turing.\u00a0\u00a0 Although director Morten Tyldum focuses on Turing\u2019s life in the context of WWII and the genius of his mathematical and codebreaking skills, it is thanks to Turing\u2019s work for the Allies during this time at Bletchley Park, the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&amp;CS), that an early version of the device we now know as \u201cthe computer\u201d was born.\u00a0 Working from a script by first time scribe Graham Moore based on the book \u201cAlan Turing: The Enigma\u201d by Andrew Hodges, the Norwegian Tyldum (who marks \u201cThe Imitation Game\u201d as his English-speaking directorial debut), rivets us with historical and personal intrigue, all brought to life thanks to one of the most masterful performances of the year by Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10227\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-2-400x258.jpg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-2-400x258.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-2-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-2.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To give you some factual history which we see unfold in \u201cThe Imitation Game\u201d on a much more detailed and intimate level, during WWII Turing led the GC&amp;CS codebreaking team in Hut 8 at Bletchley Park.\u00a0 The Hut 8 team was responsible for German naval cryptanalysis.\u00a0 It was due to Turing and the Hut 8 team that a number of techniques were devised which enabled to British and Allied Forces to break German codes.\u00a0 The Polish had already been working on a \u201cbombe\u201d codebreaking method prior to WWII but had come to a standstill in their work.\u00a0 Improving on the Polish bombe, an electromechanical machine that could ascertain the settings on the German Enigma machine, Turing\u2019s machine became the single biggest contribution to the victory against Nazi Germany as it enabled the intercepted coded German messages to finally be cracked.\u00a0 Of note is that after the war, Turing continued with his work and designed the ACE, one of the first designs for a stored-program computer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10228\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-1-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"THE IMITATION GAME\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-1.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Opening in 1952 England, we first meet Turing as he is being investigated and subsequently arrested on charges of \u201cgross indecency.\u201d\u00a0 1952 England meant homosexuality was as much closeted and secreted as Turing\u2019s codebreaking in 1939, and to be discovered or caught in the act, meant jail and\/or medical castration.\u00a0 Turing\u2019s story unfolds as he tells a rapt police detective his entire history (thus employing the very helpful technique of voice-over narration in this particular instance), starting shortly after England\u2019s entrance into WWII.<\/p>\n<p>Only 27 years of age and Turing was already the best of the best.\u00a0 As a mathematician, he was unparalleled, and had been since his early days at boarding school.\u00a0 Already the war wasn\u2019t going well for England or the Allies.\u00a0 They were always one step behind the Nazi war machine thanks to an unbreakable German code known as \u201cEnigma\u201d, used to encode all military transmissions, thus preventing England from obtaining any really useful intelligence.\u00a0 At Bletchley Park, home of the Government Code and Cypher School and operations headquarters for the team of cryptologists working to crack Enigma, things weren\u2019t going too well for them either.\u00a0 No one had the skill to break Enigma.\u00a0 So it was no wonder that on applying to Bletchley, Turing was immediately put into service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-6.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10229\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-6-400x280.jpeg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-6-400x280.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-6-300x210.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-6.jpeg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But for Turing, a young man who was always on the outside looking in, always sitting alone at lunch, not playing with anyone at recess, his social skills were anything but sociable and if he was being graded for how well he plays with others, that would be his one failing grade.\u00a0 Alienating everyone on his team, but for overseeing intelligence liaison MI6 agent Stewart Menzies, Turing is relegated to playing second-fiddle to alpha male of the group, Hugh Alexander.\u00a0 Dissatisfied with the pecking order, Turing appeals directly to Winston Churchill, pleading a case for his superior skills.\u00a0 And Churchill goes for it, putting Turing in charge of the team.<\/p>\n<p>Not just content with being the man in charge and able to focus on his idea of creating a machine that will mathematically break the code (which, by the way, was changed daily), and needing his own allies within, Turing hires more men &#8211; and one woman, Joan Clarke, for the team.\u00a0 Impressed with Clarke, and a bit perturbed when her problem solving and cryptology skills are far better than even Turing\u2019s, Joan begins to serve another purpose; as buffer between Turing and Alexander, eventually bringing the boys all together to work as one; but for how long and at what potential cost as someone on the team knows Turing\u2019s long kept secret of homosexuality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10230\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4-1400x931.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-4.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the clock ticking and Allied losses heavy, Turing and company try to keep the military wolves at bay as they move ever closer to making Turing\u2019s machine (dubbed \u201cChristopher\u201d after his childhood love) the long dreamed of codebreaker.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s just say it now:\u00a0 Benedict Cumberbatch.\u00a0 Oscar nomination please!\u00a0 Like Mark Strong and Matthew Goode, all three are custom made for cloak and dagger roles.\u00a0 In \u201cThe Imitation Game\u201d,\u00a0 each delivers enigmatic performances that challenge the audience to think and look below the surface for the truth of each real life character portrayed.\u00a0 Cumberbatch gives Turing this nervous edge of extreme singular focus that is buttressed with beads of sweat, nervous ticks, submissive head down plowing straight ahead body language.\u00a0 When playing opposite Keira Knightley, you feel a leveling of the playing field while Cumberbatch even emits vibes of jealousy in scenes where Knightley&#8217;s Joan is chatting or dancing with Goode&#8217;s Alexander.\u00a0 Very nuanced subtleties.\u00a0 An interesting element that Cumberbatch gives to Turing is an ever-present conviction of &#8220;do or die&#8221; that leaps off the screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10231\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-3-400x208.jpg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-3-400x208.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-3-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-3.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then we have Mark Strong.\u00a0 Such presence!! Stewart Menzies was a well known puppet master in intelligence and Strong embodies that essence perfectly, always having a look of &#8220;there&#8217;s more here than what you see.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 He brings it to every performance, but as the commanding MI6 agent, particularly so.\u00a0 But what I love with Strong&#8217;s performance here is that in the presence of Charles Dance&#8217;s Denniston, there is always a bit of gravitas punctuated with a look of surprise, as if giving Denniston the illusion that he is the one in control.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a delightful, devious dance.\u00a0 And be on the lookout for a surprise twist involving Russian spies, Menzies and Turing.\u00a0 One of the highlights within the film, Strong\u2019s monologue playing against looks of utter shock by Cumberbatch are simply divine.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to chess champion turned codebreaker Hugh Alexander, Matthew Goode delivers one of the best performances of his career (although \u201cStoker\u201d is the absolute best).\u00a0 He plays Alexander with suspicion, defiance and arrogance, but then completely shifts tone providing a wonderful emotional arc.\u00a0 The chemistry between Goode and Cumberbatch is a perfect yin and yang with the upper hand in different scenarios see-sawing back and forth between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Keira Knightley is the glue in this mix and the tether between the world\/society and Alan Turing.\u00a0 Knightley also has some very powerful intense scenes which she delivers with so much conviction and passion so as to almost be frightening.\u00a0 And the ease between Knightley and Cumberbatch is engaging, evoking a sense of palpable comfort.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10232\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8-400x194.jpg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 8\" width=\"400\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8-400x194.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8-1024x497.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8-1400x680.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8-300x145.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-8.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I admit that I was captivated, absolutely riveted to the story behind cracking Enigma &#8211; which I knew a little bit about but nowhere near enough &#8211; but to see it play out with such intricacy and intensity, simply enthralling.\u00a0 Tyldum and Moore steep us in history and information.\u00a0 Thanks to meticulous production design, there is very specific attention to the electrical detail and intricacies of the schematics for &#8220;Christopher&#8221; and the very cloak and dagger nature of the very buildings in which the codebreakers worked and in which &#8220;Christopher&#8221; was housed&#8221;, all of which elevated the story to an immersive experience.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then toss in the fact that much of the film was actually shot in Bletchley Park; history is well represented, portrayed and explained with authenticity, which is fueled not only by the dialogue and performances, but then punctuated with\u00a0 archival newsreel and propaganda footage.<\/p>\n<p>Problematic, however, is the final act of the film, most notably the last few minutes.\u00a0 The audience knows and has known, even before the \u201cbig reveal\u201d that Turing is gay thanks to Cumberbatch&#8217;s performance which is imbued with stereotypical shadings of the day that he executes eloquently. However, when the film returns to the 1952 present and the criminal charges for sexual perversion against Turing, title cards pop on screen taking us out of the historical impact of Turing and Enigma, creating a desire and need to see more about the \u201chidden\u201d Turing.\u00a0 In those final moments, the historical impact of the film from the standpoint of Enigma and the war feels undermined, and the discussion on homosexuality of the day feels shortchanged.\u00a0 While it is obvious that Tyldum and Moore are metaphorically analogizing Turing&#8217;s secret with the secrets of the war, the narrative thread somewhat falls apart and takes away the intensity of intrigue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-eY8s3YpE\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10233\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-5-400x248.jpg\" alt=\"the imitation game - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-5-400x248.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-5-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/the-imitation-game-5.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interesting is the use of color which is something you don&#8217;t often see in historical war time films as most directors choose to paint a grey, muted brown or denatured canvas, ignoring the fact that clothing and home decor did make use of color a a means of &#8220;cheering up&#8221; and &#8220;lifting civilian morale.&#8221;\u00a0 Here, Tyldum uses pops of color set against a richer brown background, creating a refreshing feel, not to mention creating a beautiful metaphor for life against the backdrop of horror and death of war.\u00a0\u00a0 These little touches throughout the film just add to the texture, the richness of the story and the importance of the events at hand.\u00a0 The balance of life and death and urgency of cracking Enigma is ever-present without being thrust front and center; it is imbued within the production design and the performances.<\/p>\n<p>Oscar Faura&#8217;s cinematography dazzles with depth, infused with a cinematic texture that breathes while William Goldenberg&#8217;s editing is flawless when it comes to building tension.<\/p>\n<p>Standout, and it wouldn\u2019t surprise me to see an Oscar nomination for scoring, is the work of composer Alexandre Desplat.\u00a0\u00a0 Inserting the single note tinkling of piano keys within the score, like a ticking clock or, in this case, a ticking time bomb, sears the tension and desperation into the soul.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Morten Tyldum.<br \/>\nWritten by Graham Moore, based on the book \u201cAlan Turing: The Enigma\u201d by Andrew Hodges<\/p>\n<p>Cast:\u00a0 Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance, Mark Strong<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you are reading this column, be it online or in print, one of the people responsible for this luxury is the very man celebrated in \u201cThe Imitation Game\u201d &#8211; Alan Turing.\u00a0\u00a0 Although director Morten Tyldum focuses on Turing\u2019s life in the context of WWII and the genius of his mathematical and codebreaking skills, it [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":10227,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,9],"tags":[1774,1593,1770,1776,1769,1779,1778,1771,1777,1775,1772,1780,1773,1767,1768],"class_list":["post-10226","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-movies","category-reviews","tag-allen-leech","tag-benedict-cumberbatch","tag-bletchley-park","tag-charles-dance","tag-codebreaking","tag-enigma-machine","tag-graham-moore","tag-keira-knightley","tag-mark-strong","tag-matthew-beard","tag-matthew-goode","tag-morten-tyldum","tag-rory-kinnear","tag-the-imitation-game","tag-wwii"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.7 (Yoast SEO v27.7) -
