TURNER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Undoubtedly known best to the younger generations of the world for his role as\u00a0 Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail in the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d franchise, for stage-goers and adult movie-goers alike, Timothy Spall is so much more.\u00a0\u00a0 A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Spall spent the early days of his career easily vacillating between stage and television, at one point heading up his own drama series, before finding sweet collaboration with filmmaker Mike Leigh while also working with directors like Ken Russell, Clint Eastwood, Bernardo Bertolucci and Kenneth Branagh.\u00a0 Now, Spall embarks on his seventh collaboration with Mike Leigh in MR. TURNER.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10416\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-400x267.png\" alt=\"timothy spall - mr turner\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner.png 1286w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Born in England shortly before the Revolutionary War with the Colonies and living to the ripe old age of 76 years, Joseph Mallord William \u201cJ.W.\u201d Turner was best known as an English Romantic landscape painter.\u00a0 Credited as laying the foundation for Impressionism, on his death, Turner left more than 19,000 watercolors, drawings and oil paintings to the British people.\u00a0 While most of Turner\u2019s most famous works are oils, among them, \u201c The Fighting Temeraire Tugged to Her Last Berth to be Broken Up\u201d, painted in 1838, he is considered one of the great masters of British watercolor landscapes.\u00a0 Often referred to as \u201cthe painter of light\u201d, it comes as no surprise to many that on his deathbed on December 19, 1851, his final words were \u201cThe sun is God.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 But just who was J.W. Turner, the man?\u00a0 That is a question writer\/director Mike Leigh endeavors to answer with his astounding film, MR. TURNER.\u00a0 And it\u2019s safe to say that were it not for his casting of Timothy Spall as Turner, the film might only not have been made, but would certainly not be the stunning work that it is.\u00a0 As for Spall, this is an Oscar-worthy performance if ever there was.<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Spall\u2019s enthusiasm for MR. TURNER and for working with Leigh is unabashed.\u00a0 Describing the experience as \u201ca great journey to go on\u201d, Spall is also quick to admit \u201cFor him to have asked me to have done it in the first place was great. . . . [But] I knew it wasn\u2019t going to be a conventional journey.\u201d\u00a0 As Spall puts it, Leigh \u201chas a very particular<em> modus operandi<\/em> and a formula that he\u2019s invented, which is, you bring the work.\u00a0 The work is made up basically.\u00a0 You start with nothing.\u00a0 He\u2019s very, very blatant about that.\u00a0 He says, \u2018Here we all are together.\u00a0 In a year\u2019s time, I hopefully will have a film.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 While most of Leigh\u2019s films are contemporary pieces, MR. TURNER marks the third period piece, but his second based on a real person.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10417\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7-400x218.jpg\" alt=\"timothy spall - mr turner 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7-400x218.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7-1024x560.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7-1400x765.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-7.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Expounding on Leigh\u2019s technique, Spall explains that \u201cyou come to the characters through improvisation.\u00a0 You create a proto-human being out of people that you\u2019ve encountered in your life, and you start building up this person and start becoming this person. . .Then, you start to form that person; in this case trying to make this person reach towards the research that you\u2019re discovering about the character of Turner.\u201d\u00a0 For Spall personally, his real work comes as he spends \u201ca helluva lot of your time reading, discovering, observing, going through the work, and looking at the extant material, the eyewitness accounts of what [Turner] looked like and what he spoke about\u201d with the goal being \u201cYou\u2019re trying to form this human being that will fit the bill.\u00a0 The human being becomes a hand and the research is a glove, and you try to bring this character together into the research, mesh it and create this person that is the sum total of all that endeavor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the character starts to come together, \u201cwhat you\u2019re going to do is you create a whole parallel universe in which you start becoming Turner\u2019s world and you start living in real time in this world in a rehearsal situation.\u00a0 You start putting on the clothes.\u00a0 We built a whole studio that we could rehearse in.\u00a0 It\u2019s an organic process.\u00a0 You invent this massive lagoon of information without any pressure to do anything apart from create this person, a person that might fit the bill that is the character that is emerging from the research. . . And it\u2019s the sum total of that in an essence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10418\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-3-400x237.png\" alt=\"timothy spall - mr turner 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-3-400x237.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-3-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-3.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to achieving or creating the physicality of the character, for Spall paints an indelible portrait.\u00a0 \u201cAgain, that grows out of the organic process of building up the character. . .these people which are the prototypes that become the composite, the amalgam.\u00a0 You alchemize these characters into one person as it were.\u00a0 And so, all the time you\u2019ve got an eye on the physicality.\u201d\u00a0 With J.W. Turner, \u201c We looked at pictures and we read about descriptions of what he was physically.\u00a0 He had this certain look, this certain hunched quality, a certain implosive nature.\u00a0 We worked on that right from the beginning; that he was physically very particular. . .We did him right from when he was a young man, and we got up and walked about and did him, and worked up until he got older and older.\u00a0 Obviously, the film is about the last 25 years of his life, so as he ages as he gets this odd swagger that turns into this even more odd position.\u00a0 He was very hunched and oddly physical, almost a person that was, in a sense, implosive in his nature and implosive in his body, but actually explosive in his expression when he comes to his art.\u00a0 It was almost like we were trying to build a character that was sucking everything in so he could shoot it all out.\u00a0 That\u2019s how he expressed himself.\u201d\u00a0 The result is mesmerizing, with each movement, each nuance, each expression, just one more meticulous brush stroke by Spall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10419\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5-400x167.png\" alt=\"timothy spall - mr turner 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5-400x167.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5-1024x428.png 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-5.png 1195w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finding J.W. Turner to be a man \u201cwho had this massive understanding, this ability to see things and feel them, but rather than share them, what he does with them, we discovered, and as the character grew organically, he sees them, understands them, computes them and sucks them inside himself. . . he\u2019s very, very sensitive, but chooses not to express himself.\u201d\u00a0 Given that tenor of the character, Spall embarked on a series of almost \u201cgrunts\u201d or various sounds as a means of expressiveness for Turner, defining him as \u201csomebody who is getting it, seeing it, and feeling it [and] could say a million things.\u00a0 But rather than say a million things, he just goes, \u2018Humph, humph.\u2019\u00a0 He pulls it in and packs it in there and shoves it down there.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost like naturally he stores it in this pressure cooker that comes \u2018whoof\u2019 out the other end.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the use of these \u201cgrunts\u201d, Spall relates that \u201cthere were times when [Turner] was very expressive, and he speaks a lot more than people actually realize in this.\u00a0 He actually speaks in a very colorful tone.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot more speech in this.\u00a0 People come away left with the fact that he only communicates with grunts.\u00a0 I know he speaks a lot because I had to learn those lines and speak them.\u00a0 He had quite a sophisticated, convoluted, baroque way of talking.\u00a0 That is reported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10420\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2-400x240.jpg\" alt=\"timothy spall shoard\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2-1400x840.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-2-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Noting that Turner was a Professor of Perspective and would often give lectures, \u201cthere are reports that he would be one time very expressive, as he is in the Academy.\u00a0 He\u2019s very convivial and he\u2019s very open, and sociable.\u00a0 But there are also reports where he would sit and he would stand, and people would ask him questions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 A Turner anecdote Spall found particularly amusing, and which is depicted within the film,\u00a0 involved the great French artist, Eugene Delacroix who \u201cshowed [Turner] around his studio and in his reportage, Turner just looks at him and goes, \u2018Humph.\u00a0 Fine.\u00a0 Humph.\u00a0 Yup.\u00a0 Humph.\u00a0 Yeah.\u2019\u00a0 And then he left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interesting is that in Spall\u2019s research into Turner, he found there is much written about the man, so much so that it allowed Spall to embrace the incongruities and ambiguities of his character with subtlety and nuance.\u00a0 \u201cThere are reports about how he spoke, about how he was; and they\u2019re wonderfully contradictory, as are all the different portraits of him.\u00a0 Considering he was knocking about with some of the finest portrait painters in the world, he didn\u2019t like being painted.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t like people knowing much about him at all.\u00a0 He was incredibly secretive.\u00a0 He was incredibly determined that people never knew much about his private life and that\u2019s what the film has elements of, about the secrecy nobody knew about, like Sophia Booth (Turner\u2019s landlady in his beloved seaside town of Margate and his eventual partner until Turner\u2019s death in 1851).\u00a0 Nobody knew that he had children.\u00a0 Nobody knew this.\u00a0 He was very, very secretive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-noDj77ru\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10421\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6-400x217.jpg\" alt=\"timothy spall - mr turner 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6-400x217.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6-1024x557.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/timothy-spall-mr-turner-6.jpg 1326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the one part of Turner that wasn\u2019t a secret was his ability as an artist.\u00a0 One of the few artists successful throughout his life, painting is an important part of any performance or characterization of him.\u00a0\u00a0 For Spall, that meant immersing himself even deeper into the role by taking painting lessons from artist and portraitist Tim Wright.\u00a0 As he tells it, \u201cMike [Leigh] told me that he was going to pull the trigger on a project.\u00a0 He said, \u2018We\u2019re going to make a Turner film.\u2019\u00a0 This was in 2010.\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019m going to get the money.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what it\u2019s going to be about, but it\u2019s going to be about Turner.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get excited because it\u2019s three years\u2019 time and it might not happen anyway, but why don\u2019t you go away and learn how to paint for a couple of years?\u2019\u00a0 So I said, \u2018Alright.\u2019\u00a0 In between other jobs, I would go back to Tim Wright.\u00a0 He\u2019s a very talented portraitist and teacher, and he taught me.\u00a0 And basically he gave me a personal fine art foundation course where we did all the elements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling Leigh \u201cthe great original dramatist\u201d, Spall embraces that <em>modus operandi<\/em> of Mike Leigh&#8217;s filmmaking.\u00a0 \u201cWhat happens is there is a point in a Mike Leigh film where all these things just come together.\u00a0 You chuck it all in a pot.\u00a0 All of this research, all of this trying to create this character, there comes a point, and thankfully it happens, where the character starts happening itself.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost like you have chucked all this stuff in the stew and then the stew starts telling you what to do. . .\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Everything came together perfectly in the stew that is MR.
