{"id":10624,"date":"2015-01-18T12:57:51","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T20:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=10624"},"modified":"2015-01-18T12:57:51","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T20:57:51","slug":"paddington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/paddington\/","title":{"rendered":"PADDINGTON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have never known the world without Paddington Bear.\u00a0 Born into the literary world around the same time as myself in 1958, Michael Bond\u2019s \u201cA Bear Called Paddington\u201d has been a mainstay of not only my life, but for generations of children who came after me (including my nephews).\u00a0 Paddington Bear was just like me; he was a child.\u00a0 And despite all of Paddington\u2019s worldly education and manners taught him in \u201cDarkest Peru\u201d by his Aunt and Uncle, he had all the wide-eyed wonder, rose-colored glasses, optimistic hopefulness and innocent mischievousness that resonated with every child fortunate enough to meet him on the printed page and then run away with him in their own imaginations.\u00a0 The charm of Paddington Bear was that his sticky-sweet marmalade covered paws and adventures didn\u2019t rely on super-heroes, car chases, explosions and galaxies far far away; they relied on the day-in and day-out world around him, just like that of you and me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10625\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-1-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"paddington - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, in spite of all the merchandising and the beloved book series and even a few short-lived animated tv series, author Michael Bond held tightly to the legacy of Paddington Bear.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until\u00a0 producer David Heyman (the man behind the &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; franchise) and first-time feature director Paul King entered the picture that Bond agreed to allow Paddington to make the jump to the big screen.\u00a0\u00a0 The result is PADDINGTON, a film that perfectly captures the whimsy and fun of the books and this beloved lovable bear while sprinkling it with the sweet goodness of orange marmalade!\u00a0 Eye-popping, color saturated visuals, perfect casting which includes a cuddly and adorable CGI created Paddington, and the most endearing and heartwarming voicing of Paddington by Ben Whishaw, make PADDINGTON the \u201cMust See\u201d family film event of the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10626\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4-400x167.png\" alt=\"pad - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4-400x167.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4-1024x428.png 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-4.png 1075w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Developing a script that is grounded in the original Paddington book and then peppering in adventures from others within the series, we first meet Paddington as a young cub in \u201cDarkest Peru\u201d by way of a black &amp; white newsreel made by a great Explorer from London who was exploring the region.\u00a0 And as the world of imagination would have it, the bears were extremely intelligent and open to the experiences of civilization that the Explorer could teach them.\u00a0 Raised by his Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo, the little cub is thus exposed to culture, speech (thanks to a gramophone and recordings left with them by the Explorer), tea time and marmalade, and have an open invitation to visit the Explorer in London.<\/p>\n<p>After the Explorer\u2019s departure, although Pastuzo and Lucy often talk about going to London, it remains a dream; a dream, that is,\u00a0 until an earthquake tragically kills Uncle Pastuzo and destroys their home in \u201cDarkest Peru\u201d leaving Aunt Lucy to care for Paddington, something she is too old and frail to do, thus making this the time for Paddington to go to London.\u00a0 Remembering the Explorer\u2019s stories about the kindness of Londoners and that during WWII they welcomed homeless children, Aunt Lucy stows Paddington away on a cargo ship (with a suitcase full of orange marmalade, of course), sending him off to London to find a loving home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-6.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10628\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-6-400x195.png\" alt=\"pad - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-6-400x195.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-6-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-6.png 923w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On his arrival at Paddington Station, the little bear finds that the times and the people are nothing like in the stories told by the Explorer.\u00a0 People are somber, rushed, rude with no time for a little bear; that is until the Brown family appears.\u00a0 Mary Brown is immediately taken with the little bear and promptly names him PADDINGTON for Paddington Station (since no one can speak Bear and can&#8217;t pronounce his Bear name) while convincing her stiff and stuffy husband to let him come home with them.\u00a0 A family desperately in need of some good marmalade (or a little bear) to bind them together, hilariously disastrous adventures abound, starting with a bathroom plumbing incident.\u00a0\u00a0 With escalator escapades, skateboarding chase scenes through Notting Hill, shopping excursions with pickpockets, a flying bear with an umbrella and other assorted fun, the disasters only serve to bring Mr. and Mrs. Brown and their children Jonathan and Judy closer.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to a nosy Notting Hill neighbor and an evil taxidermist named Millicent working at the Natural History Museum, Paddington may not be safe.\u00a0 While Mr. Brown tries to help Paddington find the Explorer, Millicent is hot on the trail to capture Paddington and add him to the \u201cstuffed animal\u201d collection at the museum.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to take the whole Brown family to get out of this sticky wicket!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-5.jpeg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10629\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-5-400x281.jpeg\" alt=\"paddington - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-5-400x281.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-5-300x210.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/paddington-5.jpeg 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by Paul King, with the blessing of Michael Bond, PADDINGTON is a pantheon of visual &#8211; and emotional &#8211; delights.\u00a0 Working with cinematographer Erik Wilson and production designer Gary Williamson, the visuals dazzle.\u00a0 Color tells its own story here and Wilson is masterful with its lighting and lensing, creating subtleties of emotion and metaphor that capture the wonder and whimsy of the stories.\u00a0 Williamson and King tell the story of the Browns and their home by way of a dollhouse come to life.\u00a0 Clever and engaging for even the youngest viewer.\u00a0 Staying true to the heart and magic of Paddington Bear, the story is well crafted and constructed with the plot lines about love and family and the depths of that love, which come together in a neat little bow while leaving you wanting to see more adventures.<\/p>\n<p>Casting is perfection starting with our initial introductions to Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo who are voiced by Imelda Staunton and Michael Gambon, respectively.\u00a0 \u201cHuman\u201d cast just steal the heart, particularly Sally Hawkins who radiates love and affection as Mrs. Brown.\u00a0 Julie Walters is a kick in the funny bone, providing sage grounding as live-in relative Mrs. Bird.\u00a0 The often under-rated Hugh Bonneville is anything but as Mr. Brown as his heart melts the more Brown is around PADDINGTON.\u00a0 Jim Broadbent delights as the immigrant antique shop owner Mr. Gruber while Peter Capaldi is a scream as neighbor Mr. Curry.\u00a0 Stealing the show is Nicole Kidman who \u201cwows\u201d as Millicent, making her a villain that is beyond delicious!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10630\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-3-400x266.png\" alt=\"pad - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-3-400x266.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-3-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-3.png 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s PADDINGTON himself &#8211; amazing CGI design and creation.\u00a0 Expressive with soulful eyes, the animators at London\u2019s Framestore have outdone themselves in making PADDINGTON as real as one has always imagined.\u00a0 But then you add Ben Whishaw\u2019s voicing with those beautiful emotional eyes&#8230; your heartstrings may never be the same again. You feel every emotion with PADDINGTON to such a degree you just want to reach through the screen and bring him home with you. \u00a0 The film&#8217;s heart, the heart within the performances and the heart of PADDINGTON just made my own heart smile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-nkJQKFws\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10631\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/pad-2-400x224.png\" alt=\"pad -
