{"id":10643,"date":"2015-01-18T13:35:39","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T21:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=10643"},"modified":"2015-01-18T13:35:39","modified_gmt":"2015-01-18T21:35:39","slug":"the-wedding-ringer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/the-wedding-ringer\/","title":{"rendered":"THE WEDDING RINGER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ringing my bell with laughter is THE WEDDING RINGER.\u00a0\u00a0 Directed by Jeremy Garelick and co-written by Garelick and Jay Lavender, THE WEDDING RINGER goes into what is, in many respects, virginal best man territory, putting Kevin Hart and Josh Gad together for one of the best bromances ever and some of the biggest laughs you\u2019ll see on screen.\u00a0 Calling on the likes of Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Ken Howard, Mimi Rogers, Olivia Thirlby, Jenifer Lewis and Cloris Leachman, comedy veterans rush the end zone and score on every level while football legends like Joe Namath and \u201cToo Tall\u201d Jones come in for the point after.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10644\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-1.jpg 534w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Callahan is the man, the \u201cbest man\u201d.\u00a0 Hiring himself out as a rent-a-best-man, Jimmy is the savior to grooms who are friendless. His business, Best Man, Inc., is beyond lucrative, and necessary, but there is one cardinal rule &#8211; there\u2019s no contact with Jimmy after the wedding.\u00a0 We meet Jimmy going through the motions of creating personas and relationships for every different kind of guy out there and given the great montage of jobs, one would think he\u2019s done it all and seen it all; until we meet Doug.<\/p>\n<p>Doug is a successful tax attorney but is not what you\u2019d call \u201ca catch\u201d in the looks or personality department, yet he is about to marry Gretchen, one of the hottest women walking.\u00a0 Problem is, Gretchen is planning a huge wedding and while she has all the friends that lifelong money can buy, Doug has none.\u00a0 Zilch. Zip. Nada.\u00a0 With the clock running out, Doug is desperate to shine in front of Gretchen and her family but where is he going to get a best man and groomsmen.\u00a0 Luckily for Doug, there\u2019s Jimmy Callahan and Best Man, Inc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10645\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-4-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-4-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-4-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-4.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Filling a necessary and untapped niche in the wedding business, Jimmy is a friend indeed to those in need and who have none of their own.\u00a0\u00a0 And luckily for Doug, he\u2019s got the cash to hire Callahan.\u00a0 But Doug\u2019s needs are a stretch even for Callahan.\u00a0 Doug needs what Callahan calls \u201cThe Golden Tux\u201d &#8211; best man, seven groomsmen, bachelor party, life histories (based on Doug\u2019s fabrications to Gretchen and her family which also means Jimmy\u2019s name is \u201cBic Mitchum\u201d &#8211; and he\u2019s a priest&#8230;in the military) &#8211; and all in a week.\u00a0 Let the games begin!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-9.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10651\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-9-400x167.png\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 9\" width=\"400\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-9-400x167.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-9-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-9.png 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And games is exactly what we get as Gad and Hart go for broke with rapid-fire patter, improv-ed dialogue\u00a0 and some great physical comedy, in many cases hitting the caliber of vintage slapstick.\u00a0 Their energy is infectious, as is their comedy, thanks in large part to the comedic timing of each.\u00a0 But where the comedy truly excels is when director Garelick adds the groomsmen to the mix, the casting of which is impeccable &#8211; Affion Crockett and Colin Kane perhaps the greatest standouts as Drysdale and Plunkett, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0 But what is most appreciated is the chemistry between Hart and Gad as Hart lets Gad shine and show off his comedic skills while Hart gets to showcase a softer and more sentimental side of his repertoire.\u00a0 It\u2019s a wonderful pairing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10646\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-8-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 8\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-8-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-8-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-8.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An extremely cohesive comedy casting all around, as Jimmy\u2019s assistant Doris, Jenifer Lewis adds some necessary grounding and maternal lecturings and quite honestly, steals some of the scenes from all the boys.\u00a0 Cloris Leachman, while having minimal dialogue and screen time, goes through the roof with her facial expressions as Granny set on fire.\u00a0 Not to be missed is Ignacio Serricchio as wedding planner \u201cEdmundo\u201d.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s Garelick\u2019s casting coup of Joe Namath and some other gridiron legends who add their own layer of antics to the proceedings with Ken Howard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-7.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10647\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-7-400x199.png\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-7-400x199.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-7-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-7.png 779w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No stranger to television comedy, as Gretchen, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, more than holds her own against Hart and Gad, making her voice and facial expressiveness more than integral to the game at hand.\u00a0 Not often thought of as comedians, Mimi Rogers and Ken Howard, play the put-off parents of the bride beautifully, showing off their own comedic timing with appropriate responsiveness.\u00a0\u00a0 Disappointing is the limited screentime of Olivia Thirlby and the minimal use of her character, Alison.\u00a0 There is a definite chemistry with Hart with a subplot involving the two characters that makes one take notice and something which cries for further development; perhaps in a sequel (yes, please!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10648\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-3-400x222.png\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-3-400x222.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-3-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-3.png 754w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The script is well constructed replete with tongue-in-cheek dialogue that is not only fun and often touchstones to other films, but immediately addressed and explained so as not to seem a hackneyed\u00a0 \u201cbeen there, done that.\u201d\u00a0 Be on the lookout for a laugh-out-loud nod to \u201cLost\u201d thanks to some witty dialogue and the casting of Jorge Garcia as one of the \u201cgroomsmen\u201d, not to mention an in-your-face play on \u201cFather of the Bride\u201d.\u00a0 Nice technique by Garelick and Lavender.\u00a0\u00a0 Although a few\u00a0 scenes and schticks lag in comparison to the more high octane fodder of Hart and Gad, and if running time an issue could even be trimmed without hurting the overall film, the end result is evenly paced and consistently funny.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10649\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-5-400x242.jpg\" alt=\"the wedding ringer - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-5-400x242.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-5-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-5.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the whole, THE WEDDING RINGER is fast, crisp, clean.\u00a0 The script is tight and lensing tighter thanks to some excellent editing by Jeff Groth, Shelly Westerman and Byron Wong, particularly when it comes to a football game between Namath, \u201cToo Tall\u201d Jones, Howard and company versus Hart, Gad and the other groomsmen (and yes, Kevin Hart, we know you shot a muddy game with no mud on your face!), as well as an earlier dance sequence featuring Hart and Gad who put \u201cDancing With the Stars\u201d to shame.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-pLY1EGG4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10650\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/the-wedding-ringer-2-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"the wedding ringer -
