“Pete’s Dragon” (1977) Walt Disney Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Principal photography on \u201cPete\u2019s Dragon\u201d commenced earlier this week in New Zealand.\u00a0 A reimagining of the 1977 Disney classic which starred Helen Reddy and Mickey Rooney, the new 2016\u00a0 \u201cPete\u2019s Dragon\u201d will blend live action and CGI to tell the story of the special bond between an orphaned boy, Pete, and his best friend, Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon.<\/p>\n

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard (\u201cThe Help\u201d) as Grace, a park ranger who discovers the existence of Elliott; 10-year-old Oakes Fegley (\u201cThis is Where I Leave You\u201d) as Pete; Wes Bentley (\u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d) as Jack, a local mill owner; New Zealand native Karl Urban (\u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d) as Jack\u2019s brother, Gavin; Oona Laurence as Natalie, the young girl who befriends Pete; and Oscar\u00ae winner Robert Redford (\u201cCaptain America: The Winter Soldier,\u201d \u201cAll the President\u2019s Men\u201d) as Grace\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

\u201cPete\u2019s Dragon\u201d is directed by David Lowery (\u201cAin\u2019t Them Bodies Saints\u201d) and produced by Jim Whitaker, with Barrie Osborne serving as executive producer. The screenplay is by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. WETA Digital, the visual effects company founded by filmmaker Peter Jackson based in New Zealand, will utilize the latest in digital effects to bring the dragon, Elliott, to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a story about how magic can enter one\u2019s life and change the way they see the world. And I think David Lowery is the perfect director to bring this project to life,\u201d says Whitaker.\u00a0\u00a0 T<\/p>\n

The production is shooting in and around Wellington before moving north to the Rotorua area, and will complete principal photography in the South Island communities of Tapanui and Invercargill.\u00a0\u00a0 Film New Zealand, the country\u2019s national film office and sister agency Film Wellington assisted the Walt Disney Studios in assessing and confirming New Zealand for the production.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cNew Zealand has long been a wonderful partner for film production. Wellington\u2019s state-of-the-art facilities and filmmaker-friendly community, in particular, make it an ideal location to shoot and be based out of,\u201d says Osborne.<\/p>\n

The film is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters in August, 2016.<\/p>\n
