Fields who once said, \u201cNever work with children or animals.\u201d (Actually, it probably wasn\u2019t as much the kids as the stage mothers, but that\u2019s another story.)\u00a0 But what about working with dogs, demons and Mark Duplass?\u00a0 In the latest horror entry from Blumhouse Productions, \u201cThe Lazarus Effect\u201d which is premised upon the debate between religion and science on the issue of raising the dead, producer Jason Blum and director David Gelb do just that, and to chilling result.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-po7jBSsH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11082\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-5-400x268.png\" alt=\"lazarus - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-5-400x268.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-5-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-5.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mark Duplass has been a familiar face and name both in front of and behind the camera in the indie film world for more than a decade.\u00a0 In addition to his acting skills, which are on display in \u201cThe Lazarus Effect\u201d as he steps into the \u201chorror\u201d genre for the first time, Duplass is an award winning writer, producer and director, all skills which were \u201cno joke\u201d to producer Jason Blum.\u00a0 According to Blum, \u201cTo have someone who wears a directing and producing hat, acting in a movie, is like heaven for a producer because he totally understands the problem of production. . .It\u2019s been a massive asset.\u00a0 We\u2019ve done three movies together and he\u2019s a huge asset on the production side because he \u201cgets\u201d the issues.\u00a0 He\u2019s my hero.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 For director David Gelb, making his freshman feature film debut following his award-winning success with the documentary \u2018Jiro Dreams of Sushi\u2019, \u201cbeing able to lean on everyone\u201d and having Duplass on hand was \u201cmost reassuring\u201d.\u00a0 Gelb readily admits that he would find himself after shooting certain scenes turn to Duplass for advice, often asking, \u201cDid I get enough coverage?\u00a0 Should I reposition the camera?\u00a0 Should we do another take?\u201d\u00a0 Duplass provided a welcome level of comfort and confidence to Gelb, as for Duplass, it was all about making this \u201cvisually slick horror film\u201d that had the \u201cpotential to maybe be something unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-po7jBSsH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11084\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7-200x300.png\" alt=\"lazarus - 7\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7-683x1024.png 683w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7-300x449.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-7.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dealing with demons and the beyond came a bit easier than expected to Gelb thanks to his cinematographer Michael Fimognari and the approach to the film as a whole.\u00a0 \u201cWe had a great opportunity to take a space that our characters were contained in and then kind of have the lighting changing as the movie goes on, things are getting darker and more destroyed and broken apart.\u00a0 I think a kind of key element to a film like this is the fact [the characters] can\u2019t just leave, they\u2019re trapped there, and they have to deal with the problem and deal with each other.\u00a0 So, as the film goes on, visually you kind of find ways to make it feel like there\u2019s a real progression happening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-po7jBSsH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11098\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-2-400x266.png\" alt=\"lazarus - dog 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-2-400x266.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-2-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-2.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And what of the film\u2019s favorite canine, Rocky the Dog, named, of course, for cinematic underdog Rocky Balboa?\u00a0 Played by Cato, according to director Gelb, \u201cWe had an awesome dog. . .One of the best parts of the pre-production was auditioning the dogs.\u00a0 We had all these terrific dogs and Cato kinda just stood out.\u00a0 He\u2019s got these incredible eyebrows.\u00a0 He\u2019s alternately cute and can be scary at the same time.\u00a0 But, it was a challenge [working with him].\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-po7jBSsH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11099\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"lazarus - dog\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/lazarus-dog.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Giving Gelb props for his staging and direction of Cato, Duplass is quick to note, \u201cIt is a challenge [working with animals].\u00a0 When you\u2019re casting, a lot of times when you\u2019re casting a human role, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cThis person has to be an asshole in the movie.\u00a0 Should I cast an asshole just to be an asshole?\u00a0 Or should I cast a nice person and direct them to be an asshole?\u201d\u00a0 Likewise with dogs, you kinda want a nice obedient dog to deal with but at the same time, that dog has to be scary when it comes on set.\u00a0 In the case of Cato, David was really put through the ringer.\u00a0 We had a really nice sweet dog and Cato was really not scary [laughing].\u00a0 So we really had to figure out how to light it and how to get everything right.\u00a0 That may be [Gelb\u2019s] most successfully directed performance!
