Caro goes 1:1 talking lowriders, lowriding and McFARLAND, USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it came time to tell the story of \u201cMcFarland, USA\u201d, New Zealander Niki Caro immersed herself in the culture and community of McFarland, California.\u00a0 Initially inspired by former McFarland cross-country coach Jim White and the 1987 McFarland team and the legacy they created, what really drew Caro to direct the project was that \u201cI was really inspired by the people, by how hard they work, by the commitment to their families, their faith, their community.\u00a0 And it was great for me to be able to light that up.\u201d\u00a0 Describing the experience as \u201cdeeply satisfying . . .to go in and tell a story that is not only meaningful, but is true and real, and tell it with the real people\u201d, Caro attributes her intimate telling of \u201cMcFarland, USA\u201d to her filmmaking philosophy: \u201c[G]oing there and observing.\u00a0 Eyes, ears, heart open.\u00a0 Mouth shut.\u00a0 I can only speak for myself as a filmmaker, [but] it would be arrogant and stupid to assume that I know better than those guys what their life is like.\u00a0 It makes it very easy for me as a filmmaker to go and observe what life is like.\u00a0 THEN I bring my skill in to express that in a way that hopefully an audience can appreciate it in the same way that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-usa-director-Niki-Caro-at-the-hometown-premiere.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-n60Tn9ho\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11139\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-usa-director-Niki-Caro-at-the-hometown-premiere-201x300.png\" alt=\"mcfarland usa - director Niki Caro at the \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And while Caro was committed to the community and the truth of the McFarland story, there was one element of the film not initially included which Caro was passionate about bringing into the mix.\u00a0 Lowriders.\u00a0 Cars custom-fitted with hydraulic jacks that allow chassis to be lowered as close to the pavement as possible, during the 1980&#8217;s in California\u2019s Central Valley, lowriders and \u201clowriding\u201d was an important element of the culture of the time.\u00a0 Noting that \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have put them in the movie [if not authentic] &#8211; and I did &#8211; the low riding elements of the movie did not exist before I came in.\u00a0 Low riding is kind of a big part of my life because my husband\u2019s very big into that world and we\u2019ve always had those cars.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have brought that to this movie if it hadn\u2019t been very authentic to that place.\u00a0 The Central Valley?\u00a0 Bakersfield?\u00a0 Very big low riding.\u00a0 Particularly in the 80&#8217;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even non-lowriding afficionados will note the beauty and elegance of the lowriders but, more than that, the ethic of the lowriding community.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about family.\u00a0 And \u201cfamily\u201d is just what the car clubs Caro reached out to for help with the film are all about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-lowriders-behind-the-scenes.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-n60Tn9ho\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11140\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-lowriders-behind-the-scenes-400x267.png\" alt=\"mcfarland - lowriders - behind the scenes\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-lowriders-behind-the-scenes-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-lowriders-behind-the-scenes-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mcfarland-lowriders-behind-the-scenes.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the first people I ever met was Harvey Reyes.\u00a0 His car club up there is called Carnales Unidos, so way before I started working on this script &#8211; actually the same time I went to visit Jim White for the first time &#8211; I went and visited Harvey and his wife Gloria.\u00a0 Gloria remains a very good friend.\u00a0 My husband, who is kind of all about it, and all about getting it right, he sourced the cars.\u00a0 The cars are so authentic and so specific.\u00a0 We could have used sexier cars but the sexier cars weren\u2019t there [in 1987].\u00a0 So those cars actually came from a car club in North Hollywood &#8211; The Glass House.\u00a0 Harvey\u2019s car in the movie with the mural on the hood, that\u2019s now mine.\u00a0 So that\u2019s what I drive my kids to school in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Describing the inclusion of the lowriders as \u201ca nice, glamorous colorful element in the movie\u201d, for Caro, the meaning goes ever deeper.\u00a0 \u201cIt was for me, important to make the point that low riding in Hollywood movies is usually shorthand for gangster.\u00a0 My experience, and I\u2019ve had a bit, probably more experience than a white, middle class, mother of two from Auckland, New Zealand should probably have, is that car clubs &#8211; all those guys &#8211; are all about family, they\u2019re all about community.\u201d<\/p>\n<audio
