As the voice of Dusty Crophopper in Planes<\/em> and now Planes: Fire & Rescue<\/em>, Dane Cook fulfills the dreams of so many kids who, like himself, can\u2019t contain their excitement on meeting or hearing the voice of their \u201chero\u201d talking to them.\u00a0 On meeting his young fans, Cook speaks to them as Dusty and watches smiles spread across their little faces, a joy that he knows all too well.\u00a0 For Cook, who grew up listening \u201cto comedy albums and then finally got to meet Bob Newhart and hear Bob Newhart\u2019s voice talking to me\u201d, the experience was unforgettable.\u00a0 But it\u2019s Jerry Lewis who is at the top of Dane Cook\u2019s list.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved Jerry Lewis growing up.\u00a0 I just admired him and used to act out Jerry Lewis stuff.\u00a0 I had the opportunity to go to his documentary, Method to the Madness [of Jerry Lewis], a couple years back.\u00a0 He was there and at the end of the screening he went up to the podium to thank everybody for coming.\u00a0 I\u2019m just sitting there with a buddy of mine and [Jerry Lewis] starts to talk.\u00a0 Then he stops himself and he goes [imitating a silly Jerry Lewis voice], \u2018Where\u2019s Dane Cook?\u2019\u00a0 And it freaked me out.\u00a0 I remember feeling like my heart locked up.\u00a0 And he said it again.\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019m looking for Dane Cook.\u2019\u00a0 His daughter, who is a fan of mine, had told him I was there.\u00a0 To hear my name to come out of Jerry Lewis . . .!\u201d<\/p>\n

Cook beams with both a child-like glee and humble respect, as he gets to say, \u201cI\u2019ve been friends with Mr. Jerry Lewis ever since.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a wonderful couple of years getting to know him. . . .\u00a0 He can be kind of that thing about some comics where there\u2019s a little bit of danger to them, a little bit of scary in there.\u00a0 How do you do what he did unless you\u2019re crazy enough to believe you can?\u201d<\/p>\n

With an ever growing friendship, Cook has \u201cmade it a point to go to several of [Lewis\u2019] performances in the area\u201d, including the handprint and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre during TCM Classic Film Festival this year.\u00a0 \u201cI admire what he\u2019s done and I hope I can even do one-tenth of what somebody like Jerry Lewis has done in his career.\u201d<\/p>\n
