Working together for the first time since their collaboration in Fernando Meirelles\u2019 Blindness<\/i>, Award-winning actors Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal (Babel<\/i>, Motorcycle Diaries<\/i>) and Alice Braga (I Am Legend<\/i>, City of God<\/i>) star in Ardor<\/i><\/b>, a visually sumptuous adventure about a mysterious man who emerges from the Argentinian rainforest to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a poor farmer. Written and directed by Pablo Fendrik (Blood Appears<\/i>, The Mugger<\/i>), the film\u2019s magical realism, jungle setting and social context put a fresh, contemporary twist on the western genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

When fires sweep through the rainforest near their property along the Parana River, a poor tobacco-farming family goes on high alert. The head of the family, Jo\u00e3o, (Chico D\u00edaz) correctly suspects the fire is a result of slash-and-burn tactics by ruthless land-grabbers intent on acquiring the farm he shares with his lovely daughter, V\u00e2nia (Braga), and her partner, Jara (Lautaro Vilo) Help arrives in the form of Ka\u00ed (Garc\u00eda Bernal), an enigmatic man, bearing indigenous tattoos who comes out of the jungle with the grace of a jaguar.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the violence of the land-grabbers\u2019 assault catches Ka\u00ed and the farm dwellers off guard. In short order, the men shoot Jara and force Jo\u00e3o to sign over his land just before killing him and kidnapping V\u00e2nia. Undetected by the assailants, Ka\u00ed goes on the offensive. Using his animal-like abilities, he rescues V\u00e2nia, retrieves the bogus bill of sale and thwarts a counter-attack by the now-reinforced band of mercenaries\u2014all without taking a life. But with the hornet\u2019s nest now stirred, Ka\u00ed, V\u00e2nia and Jara must decide how far they will go to preserve the farm and their vanishing way of life.<\/span><\/p>\n
