{"id":11725,"date":"2015-04-25T18:12:15","date_gmt":"2015-04-26T01:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=11725"},"modified":"2015-04-25T18:12:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-26T01:12:15","slug":"little-boy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/little-boy\/","title":{"rendered":"LITTLE BOY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leave it to Executive Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett to bring us the \u201cmelt your heart film of the year\u201d with writer\/director Alejandro Monteverde\u2019s LITTLE BOY.\u00a0 Set in a small coastal California town in the midst of 1940&#8217;s WWII, LITTLE BOY is the most uplifting, hopeful and faith restoring film to come around in a long while, due not only to the thematic elements of the script, but the beautiful lensing of cinematographer Andrew Cadelago and the dignified restraint of the more mature actors serving as a perfect balance to the scene stealing endearment and charm of Jakob Salvati as LITTLE BOY.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11726\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-3-400x233.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-3-400x233.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-3-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-3.jpg 561w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Always the butt of jokes around town by classmates and adults alike, and constantly bullied thanks to his rather diminutive stature, 7-year old Pepper is known to all as \u201cLittle Boy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 He lives in a nice home with his mother Emma, father James and older brother London.\u00a0 His father and brother run the local garage, Busbee &amp; Sons.\u00a0 Pepper is loved by his parents, but more than anyone, by his dad, who is not only Pepper\u2019s best friend, but his only friend.\u00a0 Together they share the adventures of comic book hero, magician Ben Eagle.\u00a0 Life is really pretty perfect for Pepper.\u00a0 Until the US enters WWII.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11730\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home-400x166.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - home\" width=\"400\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home-400x166.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home-1024x426.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-home.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When London is declared 4F, it falls to James to do his duty to the town and to country and enlist.\u00a0 With James sent to fight in the Japanese-occupied Philippines, Pepper is heartbroken, but believes, just as James promised,\u00a0 that his father will come home.\u00a0 But the day comes when the military vehicle arrives at the Busbee home.\u00a0 James is \u201cmissing\u201d.\u00a0 While there is no evidence that he is dead or alive, the fear is that he has been taken prisoner by the Japanese.\u00a0 Emma refuses to believe James won\u2019t return.\u00a0 London is convinced his father is dead.\u00a0 And Pepper, well Pepper, believes, believes with all his heart, that his father will return.\u00a0 However, that faith wanes and gets challenged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11727\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-4-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-4-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-4.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to an in-person appearance by Pepper\u2019s beloved comic book character Ben Eagle himself in the local theatre, Pepper gets a lesson in the power of faith, the power of a tiny mustard seed to move mountains.\u00a0 If a tiny seed can move mountains, why can\u2019t Pepper bring his father home on shear faith.\u00a0 Can Pepper believe enough to bring his father home?\u00a0\u00a0 After performing an amazing feat at the hands of Ben Eagle, Pepper believes he can.\u00a0 But when James doesn\u2019t come home right away despite all of Pepper\u2019s attempts to \u201cbelieve him home\u201d, he goes to Father Oliver questioning \u201cwhy\u201d.\u00a0 The kindly pastor knows a little lamb in need of guidance when he sees one and so he gives Pepper a list of tasks he must complete to prove he really believes.\u00a0 Among the tasks are feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and an\u00a0 added task &#8211; befriending Mr. Hashimoto, a Japanese-American man who lives in the community but who is called \u201cdirty Jap\u201d and bullied by hatred and torment of the locals, including Pepper\u2019s brother London.\u00a0\u00a0 Hashimoto, who is friends with Father Oliver, agrees with the Father to \u201chelp\u201d Pepper accomplish his list of tasks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-ben-eagle.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11731\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-ben-eagle-400x223.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - ben eagle\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-ben-eagle-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-ben-eagle-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-ben-eagle.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Predictably, wondrous things start to happen as Pepper embraces his tasks.\u00a0 A smile returns to his face, he makes people happy and above all, he finds a friend in Mr. Hashimoto and helps turn the tide of hatred &#8211; in most.\u00a0 But still, James Busbee doesn\u2019t return home.\u00a0 In the meantime, much to the chagrin of London and Pepper, the local physician Dr. Fox, has his eye on Emma Busbee and tries to insert himself into her life and theirs.\u00a0 Just one more reason that Pepper needs to bring his dad home &#8211; fast.\u00a0 And then the most wondrous, yet sobering, thing of all happens.\u00a0 (Get out your history books folks.) \u201cLittle Boy\u201d is dropped on Japan.\u00a0\u00a0 As everyone believes this means the war will end, does it indeed mean that Pepper\u2019s dad will come home?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11728\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1-400x173.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1-400x173.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1-1024x443.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1-300x130.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Directed by Alejandro Monteverde and co-written by Monteverde and Pepe Portillo, LITTLE BOY doesn\u2019t shy away from the horrors of war both on the homefront and on the battlefield, the latter of which we see play out in flashbacks which tell James\u2019 story overseas.\u00a0 Powerful, indelible dark imagery that stays with you, prompting pause for thought and discussion over the power of prayer, the benevolence of God, serves as a striking juxtaposition to the inspiration and lighter visual tone the film gives through the character of LITTLE BOY.\u00a0 It should be noted that while the film is set during WWII, and while it does include some pivotal moments from the Pacific front and key elements of the war as a whole, the film is not written as nor meant to be a historically factual film.\u00a0 LITTLE BOY is about the power of faith, belief, positivity and yes, kindness.\u00a0 And that\u2019s where Monteverde soars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11729\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"LITTLE BOY\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6-1400x933.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One look at Jakob Salvati as Pepper Busbee and your heart smiles.\u00a0 Salvati has a smile as wide as the ocean and is so engaging, so pure, so real, you feel his heart and determination in bringing Pepper to life.\u00a0 And then he adds this spunk that is pure delight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11733\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-7-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-7-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-7.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Forming an interesting triumvirate around Salvati are Tom Wilkinson as Father Oliver, Michael Rapaport as James Busbee and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Hashimoto.\u00a0 Salvati\u2019s chemistry with each is powerful and genuine.\u00a0 There is a truth that resonates.\u00a0 Rapaport is standout as the fun-loving adventurous dad while Wilkinson adds touches of paternal whimsy to connect with a 7-year old that is endearing.\u00a0 But it\u2019s Tagawa and his scenes with Salvati that speak the loudest with the fewest words.\u00a0 Restrained, proud, soft-spoken and kind, Tagawa stands tall in the film\u2019s construct.\u00a0 Standout is Emily Watson who gives Emma a quiet dignity that rises above some of the more loosely constructed \u201cmiracles\u201d within the film.\u00a0 She is the film\u2019s grounding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-wilkinson.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11732\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-wilkinson-400x222.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - wilkinson\" width=\"400\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-wilkinson-400x222.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-wilkinson-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-wilkinson.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Annoying, and meant to be so, is Kevin James as Dr. Fox.\u00a0 The only word to describe him as Fox\u00a0 is \u201cskeevy\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 David Henrie is making the transition to more adult roles since \u201cWizards of Waverly Place\u201d and does so here quite effectively.\u00a0 Henrie finds that roughneck, teen angst we more often associate with the bikers of the 50&#8217;s but digs a little deeper to put meaning behind London\u2019s own fall from grace and ultimate redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting on 35mm film and using Panavision Primo lenses gives LITTLE BOY a warm, golden palette that tacitly captures the era with that \u201cfilmic\u201d grain while adding slightly saturated color to elicit the wonder and \u201cmagic\u201d of LITTLE BOY himself.\u00a0 It\u2019s a beautiful visual design that cinematographer Andrew Cadelago takes to beauteous heights with widescreen sunsets.\u00a0 Bernardo Trujillo\u2019s production design simply charms with period perfect simplicity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11734\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-5-400x269.png\" alt=\"little boy - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-5-400x269.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-5-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-5.png 505w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDistracting to the film, however, are too oft repeated images of naysaying onlookers in the town, in which there is no movement or noise but rather, just empty facial expressions.\u00a0 Similarly, the overused voiceovers take away from the simplicity and purity of Pepper\u2019s belief and the thematics of faith.\u00a0 Scoring is also uneven and sometimes inappropriate for the emotion of a scene which may be due in part to two composers at play, Stephan Altman and Mark Foster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-pier.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7RSRAx7L\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11735\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-pier-400x265.jpg\" alt=\"little boy - pier\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-pier-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-pier-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/little-boy-pier.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But at the end of the day, be bit a mustard seed or a little boy, sometimes all it takes is the belief in oneself and others to move mountains or, make a movie like LITTLE BOY.\u00a0\u00a0 Tissues, people.
