{"id":12014,"date":"2015-05-22T17:32:41","date_gmt":"2015-05-23T00:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=12014"},"modified":"2015-06-05T22:40:01","modified_gmt":"2015-06-06T05:40:01","slug":"tomorrowland-close-your-eyes-make-a-wish-and-youre-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/tomorrowland-close-your-eyes-make-a-wish-and-youre-there\/","title":{"rendered":"TOMORROWLAND &#8211; Close your eyes, make a wish and you&#8217;re there!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">People often complain that today\u2019s generation is so \u201cuninspired\u201d, or there is nothing in the world today to inspire us to move forward with global unity to better the world in which we live in today or boldly venture forth into new worlds of the future.\u00a0 We have the technology.\u00a0 We have the skills.\u00a0 But where are the dreamers?\u00a0 One need look no further than Brad Bird\u2019s TOMORROWLAND for all that is needed to tap into the dreamer in each of us.\u00a0 Inspiring and hopeful, as much a visionary wonder of the meld of technology and humanity for the ages as it is entertaining and exciting, TOMORROWLAND shows us the best, and the worst (cynicism), in each of us, while putting forth a call to arms under the beauteous and eye-popping guise of a movie.\u00a0 Who\u2019d a thunk it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12015\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-1-400x198.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-1-400x198.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-1-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frank Walker is a boy genius.\u00a0 Inventive and creative, he looks to the future and where man can go rather than where he now sits.\u00a0 Where most may see nothing more than an Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner in their hands, with some imagination and determination, Frank sees &#8211; and builds &#8211; a jet pack. And this is in 1964.<\/p>\n<p>1964.\u00a0 The World\u2019s Fair.\u00a0 A time when the world still dreamed and dreams were possible.\u00a0 Walt Disney saw that, knew that, and within the confines of a \u201csmall small world\u201d put all those dreams together and we could find our way to TOMORROWLAND.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just what young Frank Walker wanted to do.\u00a0 So setting out alone on the bus, Frank took himself to the World\u2019s Fair and the Hall of Inventions, seeking help with some glitches in his jet pack.\u00a0 While pushed aside by some of the mature scientists and technicians, a young girl named Athena takes an interest in Frank\u2019s dreams and thus begins the ride of his life &#8211; and ours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-thomas.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12016\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-thomas-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - thomas\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-thomas-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-thomas-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-thomas.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to 2014 Cape Canaveral and the home of the Newtons.\u00a0 Ed Newton is a rocket scientist and engineer at Cape Canaveral.\u00a0 Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the last launch pad is being torn down and with it will end his job.\u00a0 Truly her father\u2019s daughter, Casey Newton is bursting with scientific curiosity and hope for the future, making her father\u2019s acquiescence to the situation unacceptable.\u00a0 Her defiance spurs Casey to spending her nights committing acts of felony vandalism at NASA trying to not only thwart the plans to tear down the future, but to rekindle the spirit of discovery and hope for the future in her father and all who will listen.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one of the serendipitous events that comes from Casey\u2019s indiscretions is crossing paths with a young girl named Athena who surreptitiously plants a pin marked with a \u201cT\u201d in Casey\u2019s belongings at the police station one night.\u00a0 On touching the pin, Casey is transported to (she thinks) or maybe is just hallucinating, a glossy polished techno world of jet packs and space travel, people movers and anti-gravitational swimming pools (very very cool).\u00a0 Is it live or is it Memorex?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-pine-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12027\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-pine-2-400x237.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - pine 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-pine-2-400x237.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-pine-2-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-pine-2.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And with just one touch, and then another, and then another, Casey reinvigorates not only herself, but the audience as we collectively believe that anything is possible when there\u2019s a place called TOMORROWLAND.\u00a0 But just how does she get there when the \u201cmagic\u201d of the pin runs out?<\/p>\n<p>Enter a now cynical, curmudgeonly Frank Walker who long ago lost his inspiration, lost the dreamer within himself but who holds the key to Casey\u2019s dreams.\u00a0 Can Casey, along with a still very young looking Athena (as young as the last time Frank Walker say her decades ago), reawaken the boy genius in Frank and all his wide-eyed wonder and hope for the future?\u00a0\u00a0 With killer robots and an android attack team known as the Dave Clark Five hot on their heels, Casey has her work cut out for her if she, and the world, can are ever going to get to TOMORROWLAND.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tomorrowland-incredible.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11601\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tomorrowland-incredible-400x179.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - incredible\" width=\"400\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tomorrowland-incredible-400x179.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tomorrowland-incredible-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/tomorrowland-incredible.jpg 591w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No one but George Clooney could play Frank Walker.\u00a0 The spirit and hope within the young Frank Walker, not to mention the boyish hijinks, is the mirror image of the George Clooney we know and love.\u00a0 As Clooney himself notes, \u201cYou turn on your television set and it\u2019s rough out there.\u00a0 It\u2019s not fun.\u00a0 That can really wear on you, after a period of time.\u00a0 We see generations now feeling as if they\u2019re hopeless, in a way.\u00a0 And what I love about this is that it speaks to the idea that your future is not pre-ordained or pre-destined. I\u2019ve been involved in lots of things like that. There is an awful lot that we have to do to participate, and we try to, as much as possible.\u00a0 We\u2019re not policy makers, so what we try to do is shine a light on people who really don\u2019t get light shone upon them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12020\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-8-400x223.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - 8\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-8-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-8-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-8.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will fall in love with the adorable Thomas Anderson who steals every scene and your heart as young Frank.\u00a0 Interesting is that we see the same wide-eyed wonder appear in Clooney as older Frank after being reinvigorated by Robertson&#8217;s Casey and Cassidy&#8217;s Athena.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12019\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-7-400x209.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-7-400x209.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-7-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-7.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of Raffey Cassidy &#8211; strong, powerful presence and really does a mighty job of not showing emotion yet tossing in slight sarcastic inflection whenever possible.\u00a0 She is equally at ease on screen with Robertson as she is with Clooney &#8211; but what really stands out is the chemistry pairings amongst the group as Clooney and Cassidy come across as bickering parent-child (with Clooney of course being the child) before morphing into playground arguments.\u00a0 On the other hand, Robertson and Cassidy bring a more equal adult footing into the equation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tomorrowland-release-image.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-11301\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tomorrowland-release-image-400x209.png\" alt=\"tomorrowland - release image\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tomorrowland-release-image-400x209.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tomorrowland-release-image-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/tomorrowland-release-image.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just what is up with Britt Robertson?\u00a0 First co-starring as love interest to Scott Eastwood and now sharing a bathtub rocket ride with Clooney, and then having Tim McGraw play her dad?\u00a0 Robertson is on a roll.\u00a0 And when it comes to this role, she brings spunky, spirited determination to Casey, undeterred by obstacles.\u00a0 So ingrained in the character, when Casey refuses to give up or give in about anything, we believe her.<\/p>\n<p>Fabulous and fabulously funny cameos from Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key.\u00a0 Tim McGraw is the salt of the earth of supportive and scientific dad, Ed Newton while Hugh Laurie brings a nice authoritative counterbalance to the mix as Nix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12021\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4-400x232.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4-400x232.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4-600x350.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-4.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Written by Damon Lindelof together with Brad Bird based on a story (and an archived \u201cbox\u201d in the Disney vaults) by Jeff Jensen, for Lindelof, TOMORROWLAND is a reflection of his own passion and belief.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve always been really interested in the future, and I feel like all of the movies that I\u2019ve been exposed to, over the course of the last 20 to 30 years, have shown me a future that I don\u2019t really want to be living in. It\u2019s cool to watch. . .[t]hey\u2019re all great, but what about that other future? And is there a way to tell that story? And I was really interested in the history of Disney, with the Imagineers and the theme parks, in particular, as it related to the World\u2019s Fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12022\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-3-400x195.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-3-400x195.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-3-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-3.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps George Clooney sums up the crux of the film best.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI thought Brad and Damon wanted to tell a story that is entertainment, first and foremost, but hopeful.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Tongue-in-cheek dialogue is peppered throughout with Clooney getting most of the fun, although just the character names themselves speak volumes as to the individuals, their traits and the story.\u00a0 Solidly constructed characters and ideals, wild and wacky entertaining adventures abound within the story construct.\u00a0 Having said that, however, there are moments where the glue is a little thin and while every element of the film from story to character to visuals to technical expertise are first rate, in some instances the transitions and cohesiveness are a bit weak.\u00a0 Disappointing is the minimal storyline and appearance of Tim McGraw\u2019s character, along with the Cape Canaveral setting.\u00a0 Both could have, and should have, been expanded given the very core of NASA in 1964 was all about dreamers and reaching for the stars.\u00a0 The script lacks defining clarity on this point which, I fear, will be lost on this generation.\u00a0 As it now stands, that aspect of the film could have been eliminated without adversely affecting the story as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>The real magic of TOMORROWLAND comes courtesy of its technical achievements.\u00a0 Visually, production design, VFX and cinematography are a perfect marriage, embodying the homespun quiet gentler times of the 60&#8217;s with the optimism, hope and scientific wonder of the future, which then serve as the crux of the life lessons we see unfold with the wars, famine, poverty, etc. of the destruction of the world; we lose the brightness of TOMORROWLAND and even the natural warmth of the Newton home and light becomes directional, dimmer with the glow of the monitors overtaking the entire space.\u00a0 Brilliant design construction.<\/p>\n<p>And keep your eyes peeled for jet packs, not to mention a particular store called \u201cBlast From The Past\u201d which provides some of the movie\u2019s greatest eye candy for the geek inside each of us!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-the-one.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12025\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-the-one-400x177.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - the one\" width=\"400\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-the-one-400x177.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-the-one-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-the-one.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Immersing us further into the conceptual and visual is director Brad Bird\u2019s decision to build large scale epic set pieces, as opposed to making a CGI based film.\u00a0 A testament to Disney imagineers, Bridgeway Plaza is jaw-dropping.\u00a0 Certain scale built global landmarks (which I shall keep a surprise) are jaw-dropping.\u00a0 Acres of golden wheat fields are real, with the wheat planted for the film.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s Cape Canaveral!\u00a0 Yes, that is really Cape Canaveral and a real launch pad.\u00a0 (Note to Congress:\u00a0 Every Congressman needs to see this film and give more funding to NASA.)<\/p>\n<p>Come Oscar time, Michael Giacchino is a name we will undoubtedly hear.\u00a0 His scoring for TOMORROWLAND is cinematic in scope with an epic feel yet tailored with the fancy-free swoops of childlike awe and wonder, then balanced with the high energy action-packed danger zone, and tinged with soft emotional moments that mirror that of father and daughter, Frank and Athena, and the hope that is the future.\u00a0 The score is so beauteous and so emotionally perfect, there are moments of little shivers and chills.\u00a0 This could be another Oscar winner for Giacchino.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-britt-pin.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-IIuFzvoX\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12026\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-britt-pin-400x213.jpg\" alt=\"tomorrowland - britt pin\" width=\"400\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-britt-pin-400x213.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-britt-pin-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/tomorrowland-britt-pin.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reflective, the essence and spirit of TOMORROWLAND speaks to Clooney.\u00a0 \u201cI grew up in an era where the power of the one really did feel as if it mattered. . .individual voices did make a huge difference.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t governments doing it, necessarily. So, I didn\u2019t ever have that great disappointment in mankind.\u00a0 I always felt that it was going to work out, in the end, and I still feel that way.\u00a0 And so, what I loved about the film was that it reminds you that young people are not born or start out their lives cynical, angry or bigoted.\u00a0 You have to be taught all those things.
