and she\u2019s keeping a daily cassette taped diary of her adventures &#8211; in a box &#8211; under her bed; and she has a younger sister.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SA5C0nUm\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12624\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-1-400x280.jpg\" alt=\"diary - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-1-400x280.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-1-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-1.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Boasting a strong cast with Kristen Wiig, Alexander Skarsgard and as the \u201cteenage girl\u201d Minnie, Bel Powley,\u00a0 Powley proves to be the heart of the film and carries its weight well.\u00a0 A revelatory emotional powerhouse, with a gift for emotive expressiveness, Powley can turn on a dime from a childish, coquettish uncertain innocence to self-perceived maturity to scowling tantrum filled child to manipulative blackmailing vixen without missing a beat.\u00a0 She is emotionally evocative and embraces every note of adolescence and the awakening sexual experience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SA5C0nUm\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12625\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-2-400x265.jpg\" alt=\"diary - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-2-400x265.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-2.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Monroe, the much older object of Minnie\u2019s affections, Skarsgard is simply divine.\u00a0 Going beyond the perfection of the costuming and hair of the period that in many ways captures the &#8220;Tiger Beat&#8221; cover boys of the day, Skarsgard brings an emotional authenticity that allows he and Powley to play.\u00a0 In one moment, Minnie is the adult and Monroe the child, but Minnie is always the aggressor in the relationship which gives Skarsgard a tightrope to walk so as not to give Monroe a \u201cskeevy\u201d edge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SA5C0nUm\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12626\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-4-400x241.jpg\" alt=\"diary - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-4-400x241.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-4-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-4.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Never a huge fan of Kristen Wiig, she won me over with her recent film \u201cWelcome to Me\u201d and now impresses me still more with her performance here as Minnie&#8217;s mother Charlotte.\u00a0 Wiig gives Charlotte depth and layers that give credence to her behavior as a woman, as a mother, as a person &#8211; and then pushes the envelope with the freewheeling alcohol and drug use of the day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SA5C0nUm\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12627\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-3-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"diary - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-3-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-3.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reminiscent in some respects of \u201cFish Tank\u201d, which helped launch Michael Fassbender, writer\/director Heller avoids the pitfalls of thematic darkness and adds a layer of lightness thanks to fantasy animations and dreamlike diary entries that enchant and entertain.\u00a0 Taking a cue from the novel and retaining the POV of Minnie and lacing the film with fantasy animations and\u00a0 dreamlike diary entries, Heller softens the free love\/age inappropriate relationship between Minnie and Monroe.\u00a0 Where she also excels is by keeping Minnie as the pursuer\u00a0 with very believable performances of a doe-eyed young girl &#8220;in love&#8221; with an older man.\u00a0 In 1976, this was more then social norm, despite the illegality of a 16 year old and 30+ year old sexual liaison.\u00a0 Although shocking to have a parent bringing a 16 year old into alcohol and drug parties &#8211; and giving her the substances no less &#8211; the chemistry of the actors and the construction of the film by Heller makes that situation also palatable and believable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-SA5C0nUm\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12628\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-5-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"diary - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-5-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/diary-5.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I fell in love with Brandon Trost&#8217;s cinematography years ago with the little indie \u201cWeather Girl.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He\u00a0 has only gotten better and more textured with his eye for lighting and lensing since then. Here, burnt orange tones infuse the film, immediately transporting you to the era while metaphorically creating the haze of Charlotte&#8217;s world in seeing her children, especially Minnie.
