{"id":12633,"date":"2015-08-08T21:02:33","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T04:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=12633"},"modified":"2015-08-08T21:02:33","modified_gmt":"2015-08-09T04:02:33","slug":"listen-to-me-marlon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/listen-to-me-marlon\/","title":{"rendered":"LISTEN TO ME MARLON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to being one of the greatest, if not the greatest actor of the 20th Century, Marlon Brando was one of the most enigmatic individuals of our time.\u00a0 He was also one of the most private.\u00a0 As the 10th anniversary of his death approached, the Brando Estate wanted to do something special to commemorate Marlon Brando and keep his legacy alive.\u00a0 Cataloguing and archiving of Brando\u2019s personal possessions which had been in storage for a decade began and an idea of a documentary began to take shape.\u00a0 Enter writer\/director\/editor\/documentarian Stevan Riley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-10.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12634\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-10-400x221.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 10\" width=\"400\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-10-400x221.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-10-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-10.jpg 553w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Riley went into research mode to develop a \u201cpitch\u201d for the documentary, the archivists uncovered a treasure trove of riches.\u00a0 While Riley was aware there were a few audiotapes made by Brando, what he didn\u2019t realize, what no one realized, was that there were over 300 hours of audiotapes made by Brando himself.\u00a0 Riley\u2019s documentary emerged &#8211; a film told in Brando\u2019s own voice, own words.\u00a0 Brando would, in essence, come back from the grave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12635\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-4.jpg 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Riley related to me, one of the first tapes he listed to \u201cwas a self-hypnosis tape.\u00a0 Quite by accident.\u00a0 It was unbelievable.\u00a0 When I listened to it, I thought, \u2018Oh my God.\u00a0 This is beyond private.\u2019 and it felt a bit strange listening to it because I felt like I was really intruding. . .I tried to treat it with as much sensitivity as possible, but it was interesting just to hear his own dialogue with himself.\u00a0 He talked about trust a lot &#8211; \u2018You can trust me.\u00a0 This is a voice you can trust.\u00a0 I have your interests at heart.\u2019\u00a0 It was almost like he just felt that no one else had his interests at heart and he could trust himself.\u201d\u00a0 And it is from Brando\u2019s own lips during one of these self-hypnosis sessions that the very title of this documentary comes &#8211; \u201cListen to Me Marlon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12636\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-7.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As he listened to more tapes, Riley\u2019s vision began to deepen and take on more definition and texture.\u00a0 \u201cIt was almost like [Brando] just felt that no one else had his interests at heart and he could trust himself.\u00a0\u00a0 [The tapes] suggested all of that.\u00a0 I was very curious.\u00a0 I wondered what was going on under the surface and had this idea. . . I planned a lot of things with the story in advance that it would be a psychoanalysis of Brando.\u00a0 It would be looking back on the tragedy in the household.\u00a0 There would be an investigation of that.\u00a0 There would be a Freudian study.\u00a0 I knew Marlon was obsessed by solving the problems of his youth. \u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12637\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5-400x209.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5-400x209.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5-1024x535.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-5.jpg 1046w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A believer in self-hypnosis, many of the recordings are of Brando\u2019s sessions with himself while others, thoughts, ruminations.\u00a0 Kinescopes, found-footage and behind-the-scenes photos and film clips, promotional materials, were all meticulously saved.\u00a0 Photos of his youth and that of happy days with his young children and his once beloved Tahiti were discovered.\u00a0 It was clear that Brando did intend, as we hear many times throughout the film, to create his autobiography both in print and in film.\u00a0 Riley weaves all into a compelling narrative that is also punctuated with clips of Brando\u2019s most famous, and not so famous, films as well as news reports of the tragedies that befell him in the 90&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12638\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6-400x226.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6-400x226.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6-1024x580.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-6.jpg 1074w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We hear first-hand Brando\u2019s admissions of fault, of bad decisions, of his reverence for the craft and art of acting but his disdain for the greed and business aspect of it.\u00a0 We even hear him speak of his reasons for taking certain jobs later in life &#8211; he needed a paycheck.\u00a0 We hear and feel the complexity of a tortured soul, his preoccupation with good and evil and the pain over his own childhood and that of his children.\u00a0 He bares his insecurities and fears.\u00a0 We also hear his compassion for others and for civil rights.\u00a0 And hearing Brando speak, we understand.\u00a0 It is a cruel irony that all the things that fascinated him would then afflict him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12639\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-8-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 8\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-8-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-8-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-8.jpg 616w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But we also see Brando.\u00a0 Thanks to his own prescience, in the 1980&#8217;s he hired VFX wizard Scott Billups to computerize his face and head believing that, \u201cOne day an actor will just be put into the computer screen.\u201d\u00a0 Although created on a now outdated program called Cyberware, Passion Pictures (production company of \u201cListen to Me Marlon\u201d) was able to crack the coding and then working again with Billups and others, do a 3D version of Brando\u2019s face and head adding in motion capture for facial movement so it appears as if Brando &#8211; in a haunting white digitized format &#8211; is speaking the very words we are hearing.\u00a0 Brilliant design on the part of Riley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12640\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1-400x227.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1-350x200.jpg 350w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-1.jpg 944w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adding even more depth and texture to the unfolding tapestry, Riley reconstructed Brando\u2019s Mulholland Drive home (now razed) on a London sound stage, complete with the decor and items from Brando\u2019s storage.\u00a0 With a fluidity of camera traversing through the house as we hear Brando speak, the result is both haunting and ethereal.\u00a0 Riley, who also edits the film, does a superb job with the visual elements in corresponding imagery with the audiotapes.\u00a0 The film also has a flow and pacing that matches the cadence of Brando\u2019s speech pattern, completing the immersion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-9.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-9u8yYiNH\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12641\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/listen-to-me-marlon-9-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"listen to me marlon -
