Joshua Rush is a face you undoubtedly recognize thanks to his numerous television commercials and big screen appearances in films like \u201cParental Guidance\u201d and \u201cSaving Lincoln\u201d and now, \u201cBreak Point\u201d\u00a0 You may also know him from his voice work in films like \u201cMr. Peabody & Sherman\u201d, \u201cEscape From Planet Earth\u201d (where he voiced the younger character to William Shatner\u2019s adult character) and tv shows like “Heroes” or the animated \u201cFamily Guy\u201d.\u00a0 Newest to Joshua’s resume are voicings for “The Adventures of Puss in Boots”, “Clarence” and the upcoming “The Lion Guard”.\u00a0 Joshua is everywhere, and deservedly so.\u00a0 He is talent and personality personified.\u00a0 But perhaps more important is that the 13-year old still has all the youthful exuberance and playfulness of a non-acting\/non-working kid, especially when you talk about carnivals and rides as we did during our recent sit down interview.<\/p>\n

Talking with Joshua is a rare treat.\u00a0 Well mannered, polite and well spoken, he is also a young man on the move with very definite goals for his life and career.\u00a0 His boundless energy and enthusiasm is infectious and genuine while with the mere mention of bringing a smile to this critic\u2019s face on watching \u201cBreak Point\u201d, he himself lit up as he animatedly talked about the film at hand.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m really glad that I can make you smile.\u00a0 It was a really fun movie to shoot. . . This kid marches to the beat of a different drum and it was a lot of fun playing this really, really different kid.\u00a0 I got to tap into this part of myself that I think we all really have, but that we kind of keep checked in to ourselves.\u00a0 Barry was a lot of fun because I just kind of got to LET LOOSE and have a lot of fun on the set.\u201d\u00a0 But as Joshua reflected, it was clear that the character of Barry is a character close to Joshua\u2019s heart.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of Josh in Barry.\u00a0 I think I don\u2019t keep this very Barry part of myself in check very well, but I didn\u2019t really have to think about that on the set.\u00a0 I got to really let this Barry part of me HOWL!\u00a0 I got to be this flamboyant, different kind of a little crazy character and it was So MUCH FUN because it was really different from what I\u2019ve had to portray in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

So just how does a young actor with a diversity of talents find signature roles like Barry?\u00a0\u00a0 As with most actors, it starts with the script and audition inquiries coming his way.\u00a0 \u201cIt will usually go to my agent or my manager and if they want to submit me for it, then it goes back to the casting director and the casting director will say \u2018Great, we want to see this kid.\u2019\u00a0 From there it goes back to the agent and then over to my dad.\u00a0 Then my parents will look it over and they\u2019ll be like either \u2018Um, we don\u2019t want Josh playing this\u2019 or \u2018Yes, we want Josh playing this.\u2019\u00a0 Then it will come to me and by then everybody\u2019s weeded out all the bad [scripts], so I get these really great scripts.\u00a0 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Awesome! Let\u2019s do it! Let\u2019s go out there and I\u2019m gonna give it my all and hopefully I\u2019ll get this part.\u2019\u00a0 If I do, sometimes I get to play a really sad kid or a really mean, scary kid or sometimes a kind of crazy, kind of fun kid like Barry. . .But, by the time it gets to me, 99% of the time it will be a good movie or show or whatever it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surprising is the depth of\u00a0 Joshua\u2019s knowledge and involvement in not only the casting process, but in his understanding of the business and the industry in general.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve done a lot of indie movies and I really like indie movies.\u00a0 But I go out on these studio movies as well.\u201d\u00a0 And then there\u2019s television.\u00a0 \u201cI think if I had to pick two [mediums] that were the most similar, it would be tv and film.\u00a0 In tv there\u2019s so many varieties.\u00a0 You go from sitcom tv to mini-series tv which is almost like movies.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 But when Joshua turns to talking voice acting, you can see the thought process shift with a palpable tacit relishing of the challenges voicing presents.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s very different because you have to use your voice to portray this character.\u00a0 In voice acting it\u2019s really interesting because I don\u2019t actually end up seeing myself.\u00a0 I only hear myself.\u00a0 But I do get to see myself in the way that these animators at these big big companies, Dreamworks, Disney, Cartoon Network, whatever, these really talented people take my voice and turn it into this character and that\u2019s what people see.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think about that kid who spent 4 hours in a recording studio with headphones on and had to massage his ears afterwards.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think about that.\u00a0 They think about what\u2019s in front of them and that\u2019s really cool to me about voice acting.\u201d\u00a0 Surprising even himself, Joshua chuckles, noting, \u201cThat\u2019s one thing that\u2019s always really amazed me because I do that, too!\u00a0 I\u2019ll sit there for a little while and I\u2019ll get in to one of my shows and then I\u2019m like, \u2018Wait a minute!\u00a0 That\u2019s me!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 What\u2019s happening right now?\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing that Joshua has in common with \u201cBreak Point\u2019s\u201d Barry is fashion and comfort.\u00a0 The most casually well-dressed and comfortable among his \u201cBreak Point\u201d co-stars Jeremy Sisto and David Walton at the film\u2019s recent press day, Joshua describes himself as being \u201cvery fashion forward.\u00a0 I like wearing my nice La Miniatura.\u00a0 Their clothes are amazing<\/em>.\u00a0 And I love wearing them because their clothes are really soft.\u00a0 Even now, when I\u2019m dressed up I feel like I\u2019m wearing pajamas, to be honest with you. . .Everything\u2019s so soft and thin and light.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And Joshua feels for some of his fellow actors when it comes to clothes.\u00a0 \u201cI know a lot of actors who wear these really starchy and itchy clothes.\u00a0 I\u2019ve known actors who always are scratching themselves because even though they look great, they don\u2019t feel great.\u00a0 I look great and I feel great!\u201d\u00a0 And he does!<\/p>\n

Delving deeper into the gift or meaning of acting for the 13-year old, as he spoke, it was impossible not to think of his parents who have clearly instilled a great sense of gratitude, humility and pragmatism in this young man.\u00a0 \u201cActing is this incredibly stressful job.\u00a0 It is hard.\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard.\u00a0 For every thousand no\u2019s you get, you might get one, maybe two, yeses.\u00a0 But those one or even two yeses are the most incredible feelings in the world.\u00a0 It makes my day.\u00a0 It makes my week so much better.\u00a0 It is the most incredible experience to be able to get this one yes and every no that I get makes that next yes a hundred times more powerful and exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Joshua has already fielded a few no\u2019s in his career thus far, the one \u201cno\u201d he hopes to never hear involves his dream role.\u00a0 Bond. James Bond.\u00a0 \u201cI wanna play James Bond!\u00a0 I want to be the next James Bond!\u00a0 I fan girl over every James Bond movie ever because it seems like it would be such a cool part to play.\u00a0 He\u2019s this suave ladies man who wears great clothes and drives a cool car and is a secret agent. . .James Bond is like the ultimate, cool guy.\u201d<\/p>\n
