{"id":1401,"date":"2013-12-08T18:08:14","date_gmt":"2013-12-09T02:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=1401"},"modified":"2014-10-11T18:11:45","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T01:11:45","slug":"paul-walker-in-a-sad-twist-of-fate-talks-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/interviews\/paul-walker-in-a-sad-twist-of-fate-talks-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"PAUL WALKER: In a Sad Twist of Fate Talks HOURS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what would\u00a0 prove to be one of his final interviews, at a press day only two weeks before his untimely death, Paul Walker sat down with myself and four colleagues to talk about one of the proudest achievements of his film career &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/movies\/movies_view.php?editid1=827\">HOURS<\/a>.\u00a0 Walker\u2019s mood was easy-going, jovial, animated and fun-loving.\u00a0 His ice blue eyes danced with excitement as he spoke about the film.\u00a0 His pride and joy in the work was evident in his voice and manner.\u00a0 Sitting next to him, watching him, listening to him, it was easy to see and feel what writer\/director Eric Heisserer saw that led him to cast Paul Walker in a role that would not only demand 110% of him emotionally and physically, but put Walker on-screen in every frame of the film.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1402\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-3-383x300.jpg\" alt=\"hours - 3\" width=\"383\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-3-383x300.jpg 383w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-3-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-3.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>HOURS is the story of Nolan Hayes, a man trapped in an evacuated and now abandoned New Orleans hospital with his newborn daughter at the height of Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 Born prematurely, the infant is put on a ventilator with 24\/7 monitoring in a NIC unit.\u00a0 The first 48 hours are the most critical and will determine her fate.\u00a0\u00a0 In shock over the passing of his wife during childbirth, Nolan\u2019s first reaction towards his daughter is \u201cI don\u2019t know this person.\u201d\u00a0 But when Katrina strikes, power is lost and the hospital is completely evacuated but for Nolan and his daughter, his paternal instincts kick in.\u00a0 He is the only thing, the only person, that stands between his daughter and death.\u00a0 With only his wits, his memories and his heart to guide him, we count down the HOURS with Nolan as he fights to save not only his daughter, but himself.<\/p>\n<p>Himself a parent to a now 15-year old daughter Meadow, <a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/movies\/movies_view.php?editid1=827\">HOURS<\/a> tapped into an emotional strength and depth not previously seen from Walker on screen.\u00a0 Known for his physicality and \u201cfast and furious\u201d action ability, for him, the realization of the \u201cpower\u201d of HOURS hit him with the force of Katrina itself.\u00a0 \u201cIt was weird the way it happened because I read it and just for page value I was, \u2018Wow. It\u2019s pretty powerful.\u2019\u00a0 I was upset.\u00a0 I was crying.\u00a0 I was rooting.\u00a0 I was yelling at [Nolan] inside.\u00a0 I was feeling all these emotions. [But] I didn\u2019t realize I was going, \u2018It\u2019s not about Nolan and a baby and this beautiful girl. This is life. And the machine is just this machine that I\u2019ve been running for I don\u2019t know how long and I\u2019m just spinning it for what reason?\u00a0 I\u2019m juggling all these balls and I\u2019m just like ARGGHH!\u2019\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to make sense of it. . . I was about two-thirds into the movie and I realized, \u2018Oh my, God. This is so therapeutic\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Going back in time within his own mind, Walker recalled, \u201cI started doing [acting] when I was in my early 20\u2019s.\u00a0 I was like, \u2018I\u2019m a Science guy.\u00a0 I\u2019m a geek.\u00a0 Geology and Botany and Marine Sciences.\u00a0 I\u2019m supposed to be outdoors and hiking.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019m supposed to be a professional guide.\u2019\u00a0 I fought [acting] for years and years and years but at the same time, I wasn\u2019t stupid.\u201d\u00a0 It was around this time that Walker became a father.\u00a0 \u201cI was like, \u2018Wait a minute.\u00a0 I just had a child out of wedlock.\u00a0 Good thing I\u2019m making another movie.\u2019 I was going into <em>Varsity Blues<\/em>.\u00a0 I found out just before leaving and I was like, \u2018I could put a roof over my baby\u2019s head and then I can figure out my stuff\u2019.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Fact became fiction when HOURS came along 15 years later.\u00a0 \u201cIt speaks to me in just a very pure and truthful level, but I didn\u2019t realize [the immediate connection].\u00a0 I was\u00a0 like, \u2018This is my freaking life!\u00a0 This is all of our lives.\u2019 [W]e\u2019re running around doing what\u00a0 &#8211; and just cranking this stupid machine and we get flat backed.\u00a0 Something crazy happens to us and then you look inside the box and you go, \u2018Holy shit!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1403\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-7.jpg\" alt=\"hours - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-7.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-7-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Adding to the depth of the film and to Walker\u2019s performance is that HOURS was shot on location in United Methodist Hospital, itself one of the hospitals decimated by Katrina which stands abandoned to this day.\u00a0 Thanks to growing up with a dad who was a contractor, and spending summers working for him and his buddies, Walker was well familiar with the construction and destruction of a building.\u00a0 \u201c[A] lot of the buildings surrounding the hospital, you could just see the water line because they hadn\u2019t repainted yet.\u00a0 On the inside, if you see a water line, you know darn well they took all the sheet-rock off the walls because they have to make sure there isn\u2019t any mold.\u00a0 Black mold is nasty. . .So the base of this hospital, same thing. The water level came up almost 12 feet.\u00a0 So, the bottom level, when you go into work everyday, the reminder is the skeleton of the building.\u00a0 It\u2019s reduced to just the aluminum and the steel. That\u2019s the first floor.\u00a0 So when they do get around to reinvigorating the hospital, they just redo the lower levels and buff up what they want to buff up upstairs. . . I can\u2019t help but think that they\u2019re probably somewhat grateful that we sent in our crew because our standards \u2013 we\u2019re going to be working in here immediately &#8211; those guys had to go through and clean it all out, scrubbing it.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t want that job.\u00a0 But every morning getting there, it\u2019s like, \u2018Wow look at this.\u2019\u00a0 It\u2019s really bad.\u00a0 It puts it in perspective.\u00a0 It\u2019s a reminder every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1404\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-2-392x300.png\" alt=\"hours - 2\" width=\"392\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-2-392x300.png 392w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-2-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hours-2.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While one may think <a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/movies\/movies_view.php?editid1=827\">HOURS<\/a> is all about emotion, take heed, as it required as much strength of body as strength of conviction given the intricacies of the plot and time limitations imposed by the now-manually operated battery keeping Nolan\u2019s daughter alive.\u00a0 To immerse not only Walker but the audience in the immediacy and urgency of the situation, Heisserer used everything at his disposal within the hospital setting, much of which required Walker running from floor to floor within a time span as close to real time as possible.\u00a0\u00a0 Reflective, Walker recalled, \u201cI had a good balance \u2013 the physicality and the emotional component.\u00a0 I remember getting about midday and I\u2019d be like, \u2018Holy Hell, man!\u00a0 You\u2019ve got like six hours left to go or whatever it was.\u201d\u00a0 But what got Walker through the day and onto the next was the work ethic instilled in him by his father.\u00a0 \u201cMy father was a contractor and he made me work a different trade every summer going through high school.\u00a0 All of his buddies were tradesmen and my dad was like, \u201cThey can never take skill sets away from you.\u00a0 That\u2019s something you\u2019ll always have.\u00a0 So you\u2019ll always be worth something because you\u2019ll always be able to provide a certain service.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 He was smart like that.\u00a0 My grandfather was smart like that, too.\u00a0 At the end of the day you can look and go, \u2018Oh look what I did!\u2019\u201d With that in mind, Walker was quick to note that\u00a0 \u201c[With] movies you don\u2019t have that.\u00a0 The film goes off in a canister.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s on digital chip.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing to show from it.\u00a0 You leave and you go. . .\u2019I said some things and I was trying to be cool\u2019 but that\u2019s about it.\u00a0 That\u2019s all you have.\u201d\u00a0 All that changed with HOURS.\u00a0 \u201cOn this one, at the end of the day, I was like, \u2018Wow.\u00a0 That was heavy.\u2019\u00a0 I experienced some stuff today.\u00a0 I felt some things.
