Australian Sharni Vinson is a face you recognize and a name that is poised to take center stage.\u00a0 Slowly building a career with films like Step-Up 3D, Blue Crush 2<\/em> and Bait <\/em>starring fellow Aussie, Julian McMahon (\u201cthe reason I took that movie\u201d), Vinson embraces the athleticism and intelligence of the films and characters she takes on.\u00a0 Challenging herself by tackling a diversity of genres, she now enters the horror mainstream with Adam Wingard\u2019s YOU\u2019RE NEXT.\u00a0\u00a0 A film that turns the genre on its head, this IS Vinson\u2019s film.\u00a0 A home invasion turned ugly, Vinson is the film\u2019s heartbeat; the blood cursing through its veins and pumping out on-screen at very turn.<\/p>\n

Enthusiastic and excited about not only YOU\u2019RE NEXT and her film career, but life in general, I sat down with Vinson in this exclusive 1:1 interview talking YOU\u2019RE NEXT, Australia and, of course, stuntmen.<\/p>\n

\"sharni<\/p>\n

So, is everyone gonna think twice now before they try and break into your house?<\/strong><\/p>\n

[laughing] I think so!\u00a0 I\u2019ve had some people on the street that have seen the movie come up to me and go, \u201cOh my God!\u00a0 You\u2019re the girl that, that, that… I don\u2019t want to be mean!\u201d\u00a0 And they start walking away.\u00a0 It\u2019s great!<\/p>\n

This was an extremely physically demanding role for you.\u00a0 On a low budget film like this, there\u2019s no time to be placing stunt people in and out, so I know that you were doing your own action.\u00a0 The way that Adam Wingard was doing the camera work, its clear that this is you on screen.\u00a0 This was not cut and paste designed to mask a stunt person doing the action and then doing an inset of a close-up of your face.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, no!\u00a0 It\u2019s all me.\u00a0 Part of the reason I booked this job is because I\u2019m very connected with the stunt industry.\u00a0 A lot of my great friends are fantastic stuntmen and ever since meeting them 12 years ago, it\u2019s been a passion of mine to pursue action and stunt careers.\u00a0 I just think it\u2019s fantastic what they do.\u00a0 It\u2019s so impressive and you never get bored around a stunt person.\u00a0 Never get bored!\u00a0 And my whole thing in life is, I get bored quite easily unless I\u2019m changing it up and being physical all the time.<\/p>\n

Plus, the added perk – aren\u2019t stunt guys the best storytellers ever?<\/strong><\/p>\n

EVER!\u00a0 EVER!\u00a0 They have the BEST stories.\u00a0 It\u2019s incredible.\u00a0 Just the other week I was with one of them in Hawaii and he went down a water slide, cut his head open and here I am with Super-Glu trying to put it back together.\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cThat\u2019s okay.\u00a0 No worries.\u00a0 This is cool.\u201d\u00a0 The guys are gutsy and that\u2019s something they were after when they were casting this role [YOU\u2019RE NEXT], is that same fire and believability.\u00a0 It\u2019s tough that you get a female heroine in a horror movie and have them portray it as legitimately \u201ctough\u201d.\u00a0 That was the really important part to get in there.\u00a0 I\u2019m lucky that I knew the right people and I had the right connections and had been physical enough in my time that I was given a chance.<\/p>\n

With the horror genre so many people think of Jamie Lee Curtis who is a scream queen.\u00a0 She\u2019s very good at screaming.\u00a0 Neve Campbell comes in a couple of decades later and she\u2019s very good at screaming.\u00a0 But your character in YOU\u2019RE NEXT is all about thinking intelligently and surviving and using what\u2019s at hand.\u00a0 It\u2019s like Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em> fighting demons using everything at your disposal and you think it through.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yep.\u00a0 And that was the main thing for me; not so much the physicality of the role which I feel like unknowingly I trained for, for 30 years of my life in just the sports that I\u2019ve come through, but it was more the mentality of the character.\u00a0 She is smart and she has this, what I almost took as a sixth sense, so to speak.\u00a0 She\u2019s the first person to hear a glass break and notice it and react.\u00a0 And her reaction time is quick.\u00a0 I had to give her the respect that somebody coming from a survivalist upbringing would have in dealing with these situations.<\/p>\n

\"you're<\/p>\n

Because of the fact you\u2019re from Australia, with the Outback and the country\u2019s mythology, it\u2019s considered a survivalist area and that almost automatically gives you an inherent (1) more believable sense of being a survivalist and also, (2) perhaps a little edge of some of the \u201cwimpier\u201d American actresses that might have auditioned.<\/strong><\/p>\n

[laughing] Well, as the director [Adam Wingard] puts it, \u201cThe bugs are bigger in Australia so we just appear tougher to the general community.\u201d\u00a0 And I think that\u2019s hilarious!\u00a0 The bugs are bigger.\u00a0 The crocodiles are bigger.\u00a0 The insects are bigger.\u00a0 They\u2019re more scary.\u00a0 They\u2019re legitimately more tough Down Under.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s just his perception or if we have Steve Irwin, Croc Hunter, to thank for that stuff, but . . .\u00a0\u00a0 I came in and auditioned as an American and they wanted the Australian thing.\u00a0 They loved it.\u00a0 They thought it seemed tougher and more apparent.\u00a0 One thing I think it does do is it keeps the mystery alive a little bit because Erin\u2019s probably the last person you\u2019d really expect, being the little slight one in the group, to turn around and be a cave woman doing these things.\u00a0 The fact that she is another nationality just adds the mystery to her background so when it\u2019s explained it makes a little more sense.\u00a0 Americans are smart so to have the same story as an American and say, \u201cOh, I came from the Army boot camp or whatever the story was originally\u201d, I don\u2019t think [the audience] is gonna buy that as much as [a girl] who came from Australia and a survivalist compound.\u00a0 \u201cOh, okay.\u00a0 Australians are known in the general public to be pretty tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s also interesting is that with the creation of Erin is that early on in your dialogue during the car scene with AJ Bowen and the two of you are driving to Crispian\u2019s parents\u2019 house for the weekend, there\u2019s the exchange where you find out what his father does\/did for a living.\u00a0 As you see things happening and other people showing up at the house, Erin doesn\u2019t quite fit in with this very dysfunctional family, but there\u2019s one line of dialogue and Erin\u2019s displeasure about what the father does, sets it up so the suspicion falls on Erin initially and the mind starts reeling.\u00a0 Is this an inside job?\u00a0 Is Erin behind it?\u00a0 To then see the situation start turning and the characters seem to be second-guessing what\u2019s coming next and what\u2019s happening, it\u2019s almost as if Erin knows something that the audience doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s very ambiguous but done with a wonderfully duplicitous edge.\u00a0 Very enticing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s true.\u00a0 It\u2019s true!\u00a0 AJ Bowen and I actually, on that line, have our own version of what the ending should be to the movie.\u00a0 We wanted to flip the whole thing where Erin and Crispian were responsible, together, for the entire massacre, but we didn\u2019t win. [laughing]<\/p>\n

[SPOILER ALERT]\u00a0 Instead we get Felix and Zee.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yea.\u00a0 They\u2019re the weird couple in the film.\u00a0 Geniusly played by my best friend and roommate, Wendy Glenn, who plays Zee.\u00a0 We\u2019ve lived together for five years here in LA.\u00a0 It was just another experience to be able to work with your best friend and sort of play your camera opposites.\u00a0 She\u2019s nothing like that role. [Wendy] is an English girl who\u2019s just super, super sweet.\u00a0 She ain\u2019t Gothic and she\u2019s a mad [actress].\u00a0 She\u2019s just such a good actress and it was so much fun to be able to step onto set with your best friend and play these characters that are just, gritty.\u00a0 Really gritty.\u00a0 I would step into hair and make-up.\u00a0 And you\u2019re used to stepping into a hair and make-up chair and walking out and you look in the mirror and go, \u201cIs my make-up perfect?\u201d\u00a0 You don\u2019t care for this.\u00a0 This is like, you sit in there and say, \u201cMess me up as bad as you can.\u00a0 Make me look as really bloody and gory as whatever this character has been through is possible.\u201d\u00a0 And then I look in the mirror and see all the scratches!\u00a0 I\u2019ve never felt cooler!\u00a0 And more in line with the character with war wounds.\u00a0 You\u2019re not worried about, \u201cWhat do I look like right now?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not about that.\u00a0 It\u2019s about how am I going to get this moment across and make it the most believable for the audience to then respond to it.\u00a0 The whole movie was coming from a different place so hopefully that comes across.<\/p>\n

\"you're<\/p>\n

One of the interesting things is that because the house is actually historic, a lot of the walls couldn\u2019t be touched so fake walls had to be built.\u00a0 How did that impact you in terms of navigating and destroying things?\u00a0 Did you have to have an air of caution with certain movements, thinking, \u201cOh, I have to hit my mark here because otherwise I\u2019m gonna break a 200 year old chandelier.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yea, we had some issues with the house.\u00a0 The house was picked for the film because it is so visually appeasing for what we were after.\u00a0 It really was that creaky.\u00a0 It really was that scary just to see it.\u00a0 I think that one of the crazy things was that when we were shooting, especially the big crazy dinner table scene where we\u2019re utilizing 12 cast members and it\u2019s mayhem.\u00a0 The table even gets flipped on its head at one point.\u00a0 And we\u2019re not supposed to ruin the floors!\u00a0 How are we gonna do this?\u00a0 You\u2019ve got one chance, one take.\u00a0 Once this is down, we\u2019re not gonna re-set it.\u00a0 A lot of our shots in this movie were shot in the first and second take.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re seeing.\u00a0 It\u2019s very raw.\u00a0 We had to be very very mindful of the carpet.\u00a0 It just remember the \u201cDon\u2019t get blood on the carpet!\u00a0 Don\u2019t get blood on the carpet!\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m like, \u201cHow are we not? There\u2019s a blood rig up my neck and my head\u2019s about to explode!\u201d\u00a0 In the original ending, I die.\u00a0 So, there\u2019s this huge blood rig where my head exploded.\u00a0 So, how are we not gonna get blood on the carpet?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how much money they owed in the end in damages, but it was probably worth it! [laughing] It was!\u00a0 It was worth it.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve played in various roles over the years.\u00a0 You\u2019ve done surfing in Blue Crush 2<\/em>, danced in Step-Up 3D<\/em>, and now you\u2019re entering the horror genre with YOU’RE NEXT.\u00a0 And, of course, you did do Bait 3D<\/em> with Julian McMahon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 The big JM!\u00a0 He\u2019s actually the reason I took that movie on, believe it or not.\u00a0 I knew he was attached and I said, \u201cI want to work with him.\u201d\u00a0 That was period, point blank, why I took the movie.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re not pigeon-holing yourself with career opportunities.\u00a0 You are very eclectic and very diverse in what you pick but with the roles you do pick, all of the parts are very substantive.\u00a0 Given that, what is the greatest gift that acting is giving you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right now, the biggest gift that it\u2019s giving me is the opportunity to literally incorporate every skill or every passion that I had as a child which wasn\u2019t just acting.\u00a0 I grew up a singer, a dancer, a swimmer, a surfer, a boxer, a virtual mermaid.\u00a0 I lived and breathed the ocean.\u00a0 So all these things, now, because of acting and the fact that you can pick all these different roles and portray all these different types of people, what I\u2019m trying to do is put all my passions into these roles.\u00a0 Huge passion for horses.\u00a0 Huge.\u00a0 So, my next role I would love to be a western period piece with a gun and real action but on a horse through the countryside non-stop.\u00a0 I am a mermaid, put me in a mermaid role.\u00a0 I can hold my breath for 2 minutes.\u00a0 That\u2019s really unusual that you can have an actor down there [underwater] for that amount of time and get those shots but I did 15 years of swimming.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to put what I can do into these roles.\u00a0 That to me never makes it boring.\u00a0 I\u2019m just constantly challenging myself.\u00a0 I always said the day I stop having fun in this business will be the day I stop doing it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never stop having fun if I can continue bringing what I love into these roles.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I\u2019m really after.<\/p>\n

Go check out Longmire<\/em>, an A&E tv series.\u00a0 It\u2019s a modern western but there\u2019s horses and guns and western things.\u00a0 It got picked up for a second season and looks like a third is coming.\u00a0 Jimmy Muro does the cinematography and some of my friends who are old west stuntmen who worked with John Wayne are doing stunts on it.\u00a0 Lou Diamond Phillips is in it.\u00a0 I\u2019m just sayin\u2019!<\/strong><\/p>\n

*GASP* Just sayin\u2019! I\u2019m likin\u2019 it!!!!<\/p>\n
