Few films going into production have generated as much personal excitement for me as BATTLE OF THE SEXES. \u00a0If you were around on September 20, 1973, you had your television set tuned to one of the most \u00a0anticipated sports match-ups of the decade as 55-year old Bobby Riggs, former Wimbledon champion who was once described as the best tennis player in the world, was going racket-to-racket with Billie Jean King, a hard-charging 29-year old with 10 singles titles already under her belt. \u00a0That match-up, together with the passage of Title IX, forever changed the face of women’s sports.<\/p>\n

Now, directors\u00a0Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, creators of the Oscar-winning LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and indie favorite RUBY SPARKS, <\/em>have turned their attention to a period in 1970\u2019s America that presaged a cultural tsunami with the telling of BATTLE OF THE SEXES. \u00a0Principal photography started this week in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The electrifying 1973 tennis match between World\u00a0number one\u00a0Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and\u00a0ex-champ and serial hustler\u00a0Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell)\u00a0was billed\u00a0as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and\u00a0became\u00a0the most\u00a0watched\u00a0televised sports event of all time (more than 90 million television viewers worldwide). \u00a0The match\u00a0caught the zeitgeist\u00a0and sparked a\u00a0global\u00a0conversation on gender equality, spurring\u00a0on the feminist movement.\u00a0Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but\u00a0off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the\u00a0Establishment\u00a0for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality,\u00a0while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past.\u00a0Together, Billie Jean and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis courts and animated the discussions between men and women in bedrooms and boardrooms around the world.<\/p>\n

The film is being produced by Cloud Eight Films\u2019 Christian Colson and Decibel Films\u2019 Danny Boyle, along with Robert Graf, with a screenplay by Academy Award-winning Simon Beaufoy (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, 127 HOURS, THE FULL MONTY). Boyle and Colson are the team behind Academy Award-winning and nominated films such as SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, 127 HOURS and STEVE JOBS. <\/em>Producer Robert Graf previously collaborated with the directors on RUBY SPARKS and worked on such projects such as HAIL, CAESAR! and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf all men and women worked as well together as Jon Dayton and Valerie Faris,\u201d said Boyle and Colson, \u201cthe world would be a more harmonious place. Together with Emma, Steve and the rest of our fabulous cast they are the perfect team to realise Simon Beaufoy’s brilliant ballad of Billie and Bobby–the perfect odd couple.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joining Dayton and Faris on the film is longtime collaborator Pamela Martin who edited both LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and RUBY SPARKS and who received an Oscar nomination for her work on THE FIGHTER.\u00a0 <\/em>New to the team are director of photography Linus Sandgren, known for his cinematography on Joy <\/em>and American Hustle; <\/em>Oscar and BAFTA nominated production designer Judy Becker (AMERICAN HUSTLE, CAROL); and Oscar Award-winning costume designer Mary Zophres (TRUE GRIT, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN). \u00a0<\/em>Co-head of Production David Greenbaum and Vice President of Production DanTram Nguyen are overseeing the project for Fox Searchlight Pictures.<\/p>\n
