{"id":1540,"date":"2014-07-11T10:35:26","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T17:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=1540"},"modified":"2014-10-12T10:39:15","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T17:39:15","slug":"audrey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/audrey\/","title":{"rendered":"AUDREY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Audrey Lewis is the average single woman.\u00a0 She dates a guy once, twice rarely rolls around and thrice, well, a blue moon happens more often.\u00a0 She is a week away from turning 34 but claims to be 29.\u00a0\u00a0 And she\u2019s single.\u00a0\u00a0 She has every neuroses about life one can possibly think of as an insecure single woman and her fertile imagination and the requisite \u201calways thinking the worst\u201d causes unwarranted and unnecessary problems in her life.\u00a0\u00a0 (And did I mention that she\u2019s single?)\u00a0 She over-thinks and over-talks everything. And yes, despite her talent and skill as an architect, she is very insecure about that, too, which could explain why her boss continually relegates her to designing parking garages.\u00a0 Audrey may think big and dream big but thanks to her own imagination and insecurities, she remains a timid wallflower, too shy to be bold, too shy to take a stand, \u201ccontent\u201d to accept her self-perceived shortcomings.\u00a0\u00a0 And yes, she is single.\u00a0 But it\u2019s these insecurities and Audrey Lewis\u2019 \u201cworst case scenario defeatist attitude\u201d that provide the humor and the heart in the quirky and adorable AUDREY.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1544\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-2.jpg\" alt=\"audrey - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having just broken up aka dumped,\u00a0 by the arrogant, egomaniacal and chauvinistic Pete, Audrey is desperate to find a man, and a husband.\u00a0 After all isn\u2019t that what she\u2019s supposed to do, what her mother told her to do?\u00a0 One of Audrey\u2019s greatest fears is that she will end up alone.\u00a0 She may have a good career, but she will be alone.\u00a0\u00a0 But there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to local newspaper stand owner Walt.\u00a0 Almost a fairy godfather, Walt introduces Audrey to Gene.\u00a0 In Audrey\u2019s mind, Gene is her Prince Charming to her Cinderella, but what does Gene think?\u00a0 As they make it past date one, AND date two, the unthinkable happens.\u00a0 Gene invites Audrey to brunch at a local French bistro.\u00a0 It\u2019s Date Three!!!<\/p>\n<p>As the big day arrives, Audrey is pulling out all the stops; buying the perfect new little dress, matching shoes, perfect hand bag, practices her posture, stance and hand folding, and the morning of the brunch, does the unimaginable &#8211; she gets a full make-over at the local Sephora store.\u00a0 In Audrey\u2019s mind, she is now the picture perfect imitation of perhaps a more famous \u201cAudrey\u201d.\u00a0 Confident, pretty, she\u2019s ready for her date.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the bistro early, after waiting 15 minutes, Audrey\u2019s insecurities take hold.\u00a0 She is thrown off guard by the rather snotty maitre d\u2019 who dislikes \u201ca party of one\u201d taking up a table or even being shown to the table to wait.\u00a0 As the minutes tick by, Audrey starts going into a freefall.\u00a0 All she sees on the menu are calories, not the food items; the butter knife becomes her best friend as she checks her teeth for lipstick, not to mention spying on her ex-Pete who has arrived with his new girlfriend Tess; and what about that couple at the next table who are whispering?\u00a0 It has to be about her, right?; and,\u00a0 oh where is he?\u00a0 Let me call his cell phone and see if he answers but then hang up.\u00a0\u00a0 Giving up on Gene and trying to make an escape unseen, her boss arrives with the VIP client for whom Audrey is designing a parking garage.\u00a0 So much for leaving now.<\/p>\n<p>Forced to stay and face the inevitable humiliation of being stood up, the experience is only furthered by a precocious little girl named Rose, not to mention a rather gregarious yet sweetly intentioned balding man in a bowling shirt named Donny who keeps trying to buy Audrey drinks with little umbrellas in them.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s the busboy, Juan.\u00a0\u00a0 How will Audrey ever get through this disaster of a day?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1545\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Audrey-3.jpg\" alt=\"Audrey - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Audrey-3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Audrey-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sybil Darrow is nothing short of quirky adorbsome as AUDREY.\u00a0 The camera loves her.\u00a0 Darrow\u00a0 brings a freshness to AUDREY that keeps the character likeable even while drowning in self-pity and imagined tragedy.\u00a0 She gives AUDREY the beautiful frailty of a wilting flower that perks up from a ray of sunshine.\u00a0\u00a0 Lovely performance and character nuance.<\/p>\n<p>As the chauvinistic Pete, Ed Quinn is spot on. Narcissistic, braggadocios, Quinn hits all the beats but then amps it up during the imagined fantasy sequences.\u00a0 It works.\u00a0 wilting flower.\u00a0 Jonathan Chase is beyond boy-next-door charming.\u00a0 With a smile to melt the coldest heart and an affability that is engaging and infectious, it\u2019s a shame that AUDREY is premised on Gene\u2019s absence as Chase is a joy to watch.\u00a0\u00a0 His chemistry with Darrow is palpable and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Adding some weighty wisdom to the experience are veterans Ed Asner, Charles Shaughnessy and Ethan Phillips.\u00a0\u00a0 Although too brief in his appearances, Asner enchants as the kindly, grandfatherly Walt.\u00a0 Shaughnessy on the other hand, is a haughty delight as maitre d\u2019\u00a0 Jacques, capitalizing on the limited, but noticeable arc of the character.\u00a0 Real fun comes compliments of Ethan Phillips who steals scenes as the seemingly pesky but kind-hearted Donny.\u00a0 Phillips &#8211; and the dialogue &#8211; play to his being more of a court jester in appearance than a Prince Charming, but in the \u201ccan\u2019t judge a book by it\u2019s cover\u201d category, provides some needed subtext.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1543\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-1-400x300.jpeg\" alt=\"audrey - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-1.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/audrey-1-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Co-written by Dean Pollack and Sybil Darrow with Pollack directing Darrow as AUDREY, the film capitalizes on the stereotypical cliches and tropes of female insecurity, using that as the stepping stone for some fun fantasy moments and the rather whimsical humor that fills the film.\u00a0 While most women may not openly admit that their own minds have reeled with some of the same thoughts and fears of AUDREY when it comes to being single and the dating landscape, trust me, at some point in lives we all have.\u00a0 And it\u2019s that touchstone that resonates; especially when we\u2019re all still standing, surviving and thriving.\u00a0 There is that unspoken light at the end of the tunnel for AUDREY that the audience sees before she does.\u00a0 It\u2019s a tricky emotional narrative to walk, but Pollack and Darrow navigate it cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Structuring the one hour in the restaurant to play as real-time is not an easy task, yet thanks to the construct of\u00a0 AUDREY and her flashbacks and fantasy sequences with various patrons in the bistro, the story moves and expands from what could have been a flat cold canvas.\u00a0 A mix of hand-held, dolly and steadi-cam work, travelling from table to table, around people, a trek to the bathroom, buttressed by a wide range of angles effectively moves the audience in and out of patron\u00a0 POVs and the metaphoric relation to AUDREY\u2019s perceptions.\u00a0 Cinematographer Pierluigi \u201cGigi\u201d Malavasi also uses light as a beautiful storytelling tool creating some lovely imagery.\u00a0 Color saturation just fuels the fantasy and Audrey\u2019s imagination even further, enriching the palette.\u00a0\u00a0 A particularly effective scene that showcases Malavasi\u2019s visuals is between Donny and AUDREY.\u00a0 Engaged in a very heartfelt conversation with pearls of wisdom and kindness from Donny, the ambient light begins to change and the third act opens up with a brighter, clearer light while the camera captures a rosier, more saturated glow on AUDREY\u2019s skin and a sparkle in the eyes that one can\u2019t help but notice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1546\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Audrey-4.jpg\" alt=\"Audrey -
