{"id":1714,"date":"2014-05-23T11:33:39","date_gmt":"2014-05-23T18:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=1714"},"modified":"2014-10-12T12:39:08","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T19:39:08","slug":"words-and-pictures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/words-and-pictures\/","title":{"rendered":"WORDS AND PICTURES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1717\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/WP-1.jpg\" alt=\"W&amp;P - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/WP-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/WP-1-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the most marvelous movie-going experiences of the year, with WORDS AND PICTURES screenwriter Gerald Di Pego and director Fred Schepisi create a film that wafts over you, making the heart smile.\u00a0 The dialogue is smartly written and constructed, as well as intelligent and witty.\u00a0 And watching leads Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche is like looking at a magical meld of Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman in <em>Notorious<\/em> with the loving needling they then brought decades later with <em>Indiscreet<\/em>.\u00a0 The chemistry between Owen and Binoche sparkles, sizzles, electrifies.\u00a0 Owen and Binoche are, in a word, magic.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Marcus is a seemingly washed up writer turned English professor teaching honors students.\u00a0 Not having published anything in years, not only is his job on the line, but his beloved literary magazine at the school which he oversees. Seems that school boards aren\u2019t as interested in the students\u2019 works as in the teacher\u2019s, especially when a published professor writing for the little school magazine is a selling point to wealthy donors.\u00a0 Dina Delsanto is a renowned painter who hasn\u2019t shown any new works for years.\u00a0 Riddled with rheumatoid arthritis, she has been unable to create the charcoal sketches and figures for which she is known and has been pushing herself to find a new rhythm, new style so that she can fuel her passion.\u00a0 In the meantime, however, she has taken a professorial position as the Fine Arts teacher the same school with Jack Marcus.\u00a0 And it only takes minutes on their first day of school together for the battle lines to be drawn.\u00a0 Which is more powerful &#8211; words or pictures?\u00a0 Delsanto\u2019s argument is that pictures and images speak for themselves and need no words.\u00a0 Marcus contends that a picture speaks a thousand words.\u00a0 And so the two embark on what starts as a daily sparring match of word games but turns in to so much more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1719\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-3.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the battle between Marcus and Delsanto intensifies, so does the interest of their students, sparking an all out war of WORDS AND PICTURES with the stakes higher than anyone ever imagined.\u00a0 Marcus will write a poem from which Delsanto will then paint a picture with the students deciding on which is more powerful\u00a0 &#8211; words or pictures.\u00a0 With demons haunting them both, the bigger questions arise.\u00a0 Does Jack Marcus have an all-powerful poem still inside him?\u00a0 Can Dina Delsanto find a way to paint her voice with her now physical limitations?<\/p>\n<p>According to Latitude Productions producer Curtis Burch, who chose WORDS AND PICTURES and the company\u2019s debut feature, \u201cFor me, this movie isn\u2019t about which is more powerful, words or pictures.\u00a0 All of us are moved by it for different reasons.\u00a0 The thing that drew me to it was this idea that many of us get to a point in our lives where we are disappointed with how things have turned out.\u00a0 We can\u2019t do work we dreamed of doing.\u00a0 Both of these two people are being restricted from doing work that they love. . . Does a person\u2019s life have worth if they can\u2019t do the work they dreamed of doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling WORDS AND PICTURES \u201ca blessed collaboration\u201d between himself, writer Gerald Di Pego and director Fred Schepisi, Burch notes that \u201ceverything on the screen is somewhat reflective of our combined taste.\u201d\u00a0 Employing the once universally accepted technique of limiting the cooks in the kitchen to one hands-on executive producer, one director and one writer, Burch insured a clarity of thought and storytelling.\u00a0 As Schepisi notes, \u201cIt always starts with the script.\u00a0 If the script is good and fills you full of possibilities and does the same for the actors, that\u2019s important, as everybody gets headed in the same direction.\u00a0 When you get ideas, actors get ideas and contribute things, I get ideas, then you put it back through the writer so that it stays in his voice or her voice, whatever the case.\u00a0 That\u2019s important because a film has to have its own world and its own logic and style and discipline that works for that subject.\u00a0 You must stay true to that world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1721\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-5.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 5\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-5.jpg 320w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Important to Schepisi with WORDS AND PICTURES was to \u201c[S]ubvert all cliches.\u00a0 Subvert the possible cliches.\u00a0 For instance, the boy who gets into trouble.\u00a0 He\u2019s normally the big blonde rich kid with the very big car.\u00a0 That\u2019s not who does it normally.\u00a0 Make it more realistic.\u00a0 Make it more culturally diverse, which is true of schools now.\u00a0 Explore all that.\u00a0 What\u2019s the technology?\u00a0 Even in one or two years, the impact changes. . . How does that impact kids in school?\u00a0 How is that served?\u00a0 A tweet is a certain number of characters.\u00a0 Well, then haiku is something interesting.\u00a0 Let\u2019s bring that in. . . How do you use all that?\u00a0 And the smart board we use so you can have the argument with the encyclopedia versus the internet. . .And then, how do we do the art?\u00a0 Let\u2019s take it to a great place, but let\u2019s also keep it accessible so that it\u2019s not alienating; when you see it, it absolutely creates a wonderful emotion immediately.\u00a0 How do we do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With script in hand and director on board, Burch found \u201cThe hardest part was casting the leads. . .Once Clive came on board, Juliette was everybody\u2019s first choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1723\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-7.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-7.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-7-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Jack Marcus, Clive Owen not only captivates with emotive expressive monologues and the glib witty charm of vintage Cary Grant, but he imbues Jack with a power in self-pitying drunken rages that is both mesmerizing and heartbreaking.\u00a0 It is a testament to Owen\u2019s skill as an actor to find that balance in making Jack likeable against a great darkness.\u00a0 Similarly, Juliette Binoche elegantly and painfully captures the limitations and effects of rheumatoid arthritis.\u00a0 The inner darkness that each character manifests against their passion and brilliance plays like a rapier double edged sword.\u00a0 Watching Owen and Binoche do this dance leaves one emotionally breathless and wanting more.\u00a0 They are like fire and ice as each brings amazing nuance to their individual and collective performances.\u00a0 The little sly grin that each has when they best the other one, topped by verbal exchanges and sparring is absolutely delicious; a delightful foreplay capturing the very essence that was Grant and Bergman in &#8220;Indiscreet&#8221;.\u00a0 And shall we just note, the camera captures all and when it comes to Binoche, it loves her.\u00a0 She is luminous!<\/p>\n<p>The premise of\u00a0 words versus pictures war is brilliant in its concept and construct; it&#8217;s a debate that has raged for centuries.\u00a0 To see it so succinctly played out before us is simply divine.\u00a0\u00a0 The only shortcoming to\u00a0 WORDS AND PICTURES lies with the supporting cast and a seeming lack of development, particularly with someone like Bruce Davison who adds such great texture.\u00a0 While quite often the case, scenes and dialogue of supporting characters that add that texture to a film, must be sadly left on the cutting room floor, it doesn\u2019t lessen my desire to have seen Davison\u2019s\u00a0 Walt &#8211; best friend and colleague of Jack, to be fleshed out a bit more.\u00a0\u00a0 Same goes with Valerie Tian who really captures the heart with her take as Delsanto\u2019s prize student, Emily.\u00a0 Great arc within that character as well.\u00a0 Emily is one of the supporting players that doesn&#8217;t &#8220;stagnate&#8221;; she actually flourishes.\u00a0\u00a0 Delicious fun is Amy Brenneman as Jack\u2019s ex Elspeth, a woman who just happens to hold his fate in the palm of her hands thanks to being a big player on the School Board.\u00a0 Brenneman clearly relishes the role.\u00a0 In other words, there&#8217;s nothing wrong with the performances.\u00a0 The cast is just so talented, I want to see more.\u00a0 Although given the structure of the story, to see more of the supporting cast would detract from the wonder of Owen and Binoche.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1722\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-6.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-6.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-6-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Working hand-in-hand with Schepisi are his long-time collaborators cinematographer Ian Baker and production designer Patrizia Von Brandenstein.\u00a0 \u201cSince we\u2019ve worked together before, we kind of know what we\u2019re doing and each is pushing the other to do it better.\u00a0 We put Ian into some very difficult situations at times. [laughing] That apartment that she\u2019s in along the river, the ceiling was not even as high as those paintings [pointing to the wall at the Four Seasons]. [chortling] A little lighting challenge.\u00a0 But what it affords you, which he knows, is something quite unusual and texturally different plus that wonderful sense of place outside with the boats going past on the river.\u201d\u00a0 Capitalizing on the play of natural light, Baker&#8217;s cinematography is rich, textured.\u00a0 Wonderful lighting differentials for establishing tone as between the darker wood, messiness of corduroy wearing Jack Marcus and the lighter, brighter cooler edgier palette and framing of Dina Delsanto&#8217;s studio and classroom.\u00a0 The visual tone speaks volumes as to the characters and the &#8220;war&#8221; at hand. The design of the climactic assembly metaphorically hints of Roman gladiators in a coliseum.<\/p>\n<p>One look at WORDS AND PICTURES and Schepisi\u2019s calm confidence in Baker and Von Brandenstein is more than justified.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s [Baker] knowing why I\u2019m doing something and more than that, appreciating it and taking advantage of those situations.\u00a0 Ian and Patrizia work very strongly together. . .For example, in [Delsanto\u2019s] studio, we built that section of it and Patrizia has built in glass of a certain height so Ian can use it like daylight and light through that.\u00a0 There\u2019s this constant interchange between them when we\u2019re doing it.\u00a0 They know that I\u2019m gonna be doing one-shots at one point, but they know I\u2019ll be doing a lot of cutting at another point when there\u2019s not a lot of time to achieve that.\u00a0 Ian is constantly trying to give texture in lighting every time you go to a location or set that you\u2019ve been on before, to give it another time of day, just other textures.\u201d\u00a0 The result of this true collaborative styling delivers high production values, and visual storytelling that is effective, telling, wonderful to watch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1718\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-2.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-2-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So key to WORDS AND PICTURES are the very pictures themselves, all of which are drawn and\/or painted by Juliette Binoche.\u00a0 While Schepisi knew that Binoche was an artist, \u201cWhat I didn\u2019t know is the extent to which she could paint and what her talent was.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But she has to go on the same journey as a person that the character had to go on, but for different reasons.\u00a0 She had to go from being basically a portrait artist through to expressing herself in a whole new way.\u00a0 That was fun. [laughing].\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Binoche\u2019s own progress in developing new technique and style mirrors that of her character, including extensive research into the effects of RA and how it impacts the physical movements for painting.\u00a0\u00a0 Much of the painting sequences were unrehearsed and shot live on camera capturing Binoche\u2019s true emotion and the physicality involved in the creation of art.\u00a0 The result is beauteous in spirit and content.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1720\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-4.jpg\" alt=\"w&amp;p - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/wp-4-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While Schepisi notes the importance of music and score within a film, he has a caveat.\u00a0 \u201cI always like that the music doesn\u2019t gild the lily; that the music tells you something that you cannot otherwise see or get or feel.\u00a0 Sometimes it might behave as if there\u2019s a lot more going on here than \u2018this\u2019; there\u2019s an undercurrent here that kind of changes what you think the scene\u2019s about.\u00a0 Subtly most of the time.\u201d\u00a0 According to Schepisi, \u201c[I]n the original script [Jack Marcus] listened to jazz and [Dina Delsanto] listened to classical.\u00a0 And I went, nuh-uh.\u00a0 I listen to jazz.\u00a0 I listen to classical.\u00a0 I listen to Handel.\u00a0 But nobody sits there and listens to just one kind of music.\u00a0 So I wanted to try and get surprises in with what music they might listen to.\u00a0 In fact it was Clive\u2019s suggestion that we go after David Bowie for the piece of music we use when Jack\u2019s kind of losing it.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what you expect and I thought it was a great suggestion.\u00a0 So we tried to use bits of music like that for him when he was having a bit of a struggle, some of which Paul Grabowsky the composer re-wrote and gave us his version of because you can\u2019t afford too much of [the actual artists].\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Not only Paul Grabowsky\u2019s score, but the individual musical selections are perfection, further establishing character, mood and emotional tone, serving as the bridge between words and pictures as if joining the arts into a triumvirate as one.<\/p>\n<p>WORDS AND PICTURES is music to my ears.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Fred Schepisi<\/p>\n<p>Written by Gerald Di Pego<\/p>\n<p>Cast: Clive Owen, Juliette Binoche, Bruce Davison, Amy Brenneman, Valerie Tian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias One of the most marvelous movie-going experiences of the year, with WORDS AND PICTURES screenwriter Gerald Di Pego and director Fred Schepisi create a film that wafts over you, making the heart smile.\u00a0 The dialogue is smartly written and constructed, as well as intelligent and witty.\u00a0 And watching leads Clive Owen [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1717,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,9],"tags":[50,271],"class_list":["post-1714","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-movies","category-reviews","tag-romantic-comedy","tag-words-and-pictures"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.5 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
