{"id":1917,"date":"2014-03-13T14:30:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T21:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=1917"},"modified":"2014-10-12T16:38:28","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T23:38:28","slug":"need-for-speed-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/need-for-speed-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NEED FOR SPEED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1922\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-grasshopper.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - grasshopper\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-grasshopper.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-grasshopper-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Start your engines!\u00a0 Since 1994, the \u201cNeed for Speed\u201d video game has had 20 different incarnations and racing adventures and is a multi-generational at-home thrill ride worldwide.\u00a0 Given its popularity and commercial success, it was only a matter of time before \u201cNeed for Speed\u201d the game would become NEED FOR SPEED the movie.\u00a0 And for this big screen adaptation, the perfect triumvirate of filmmakers come together &#8211; director Scott Waugh, stunt coordinator Lance Gilbert and cinematographer Shane Hurlbut &#8211; to deliver a mind blowing high octane thrill ride like we\u2019ve never seen on screen before.<\/p>\n<p>Between Waugh\u2019s direction, Hurlbut\u2019s Oscar-worthy cinematography and Gilbert\u2019s stunt coordination and design &#8211; not to mention the work of every stunt legend and legendary stunt family working today (Picerni, Baxley, Kingi, Epper Gilbert, just to name a few), plus a solid story and powerful emotional and engaging performances all around, all I can say is NEED FOR SPEED is mind boggling exhilaration!!!!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1927\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-6.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - print 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-6.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-6-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given that there was no narrative with the video games, translation to the big screen was a blank canvas for Waugh and screenwriters George and John Gatins.\u00a0 No strangers themselves to the automotive world, the Gatinses own a classic car shop in Van Nuys, California, specializing in classic car restoration.\u00a0 Needless to say, their intimate knowledge of cars and the racing world, just adds to the authenticity and practical stunt experience which rockets NEED FOR SPEED into high gear.\u00a0\u00a0 The result is throwback to fast cars and fast films of the 60&#8217;s and 70&#8217;s where family, friends and loyalty matter; where everyone knows everyone else; where the big excitement in a small town is nightly drag racing in the underground street circuit\u00a0 with food and drinks at the local drive-in to crown the winners.\u00a0 Welcome to Mt. Kisco, New York and Tobey Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>Tobey\u2019s dad was an automotive legend.\u00a0 He could build and rebuild any car &#8211; particularly race cars.\u00a0 And with Mt. Kisco being what it is, Tobey followed in his dad\u2019s business together with his best friends, Little Pete, Benny, Finn and Joe.\u00a0 Blood brothers wouldn\u2019t be any closer than this group.\u00a0 Each with their own automotive and technological talent, it is their dream to leave Mt. Kisco and hit the NASCAR circuit like local bad boy Dino Brewster.\u00a0 Brewster hasn\u2019t looked back since leaving town except to stop by every now and then to thumb his nose at everyone and taunt Tobey over not only his racing success, but on stealing Tobey\u2019s girlfriend and Pete\u2019s sister, Anita.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, business hasn\u2019t been too good for Marshall Motors Automotive and Tobey will lose it to foreclosure if he can\u2019t come up with the cash to save it.\u00a0 But Dino has an offer.\u00a0 He owns the unfinished Ford Mustang that was being customized by Carroll Shelby at the time of his death.\u00a0 Dino wants it finished and wants Tobey and the boys to finish it.\u00a0 Expected sale price of the car will be at least $1 million and Dino will cut Tobey in for a quarter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1925\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-4.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - print 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dino being who Dino is, Tobey should know better than to trust him but goes ahead with the deal.\u00a0 Sadly, things post-sale get out of control and Little Pete is killed during a road race with Dino and Tobey.\u00a0 Dino disappears, Tobey takes the rap and serves two years in prison.\u00a0 On his release, revenge is the watchword of the day and Tobey knows just how to get it.\u00a0 Enter the underground race called the DeLeon.\u00a0 Organized via the internet by a mysterious racing fanatic called \u201cMonarch\u201d, the race is invitation only and only for those with super-charged European race cars or suped-up classics.\u00a0 The winner gets the pink slip of the losers\u2019 cars.<\/p>\n<p>Calling on his old Marshall Motors boys, and with more than a little help from an all-knowing car enthusiast and private sales agent for super cars named Julia, Tobey and gang steal the Shelby they once restored and set out on a cross country trek to not only capture the attention of Monarch and get an invite to DeLeon, but win it all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1924\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-2.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - print 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-2-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When it came to casting, especially the role of Tobey, director Waugh had one thing in mind; he \u201cwanted to find the next young Steve McQueen.\u00a0 Steve harnessed three things that were very important &#8211; danger, charisma and likeability.\u201d\u00a0 Hard to find in three individuals let alone one, Waugh knew he found his man with Aaron Paul.\u00a0 Although Paul was an obvious choice for the role of Dino, Waugh knew he was the more interesting choice for Tobey.\u00a0 \u201c That defines the movie we\u2019re making. [Aaron\u2019s] a unique, interesting person.\u201d\u00a0 As Tobey, Paul is magical.\u00a0 He truly is the 21st century embodiment of Steve McQueen.\u00a0 Paul delivers an earnestness and authenticity that is palpable, likeable and engaging.\u00a0 His intensity, along with the stunts\/ racing sequences and lensing by Hurlbut, put us in the driver\u2019s seat with him.\u00a0 And at the same time, Paul has a vulnerability and moral compass that gives emotional texture to Tobey.<\/p>\n<p>Paul found it easy to find the balance of action, the brotherhood of the Marshall Motors boys and burgeoning relationship between Tobey and Julia with the key being that \u201cwe weren\u2019t \u2018acting\u2019 like we were driving. There was no green screen. . .[Y]ou\u2019re in that situation.\u00a0 The brotherhood, the Marshall Motor boys, it was all on the page.\u00a0 They are just so different from each other, but we just really get along and we really hit it off.\u201d\u00a0 As for Imogen Poots, the two were already working on a film together when the NEED FOR SPEED script rolled in.\u00a0 Paul \u201cjust wanted [Immy] to come along with me. . . I just begged Immy to come with me.\u00a0 She did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1929\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-31.jpg\" alt=\"Need for Speed - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-31.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-31-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Undergoing extensive drive training for the role of Tobey, much of Paul\u2019s course work was out at Willow Springs, initially \u201clearning how to get out of problematic situations, like if something went wrong.\u00a0 And then the fun started, the fun began.\u00a0 Drifting around corners doing reverse 180&#8217;s, learning how to do 360&#8217;s.\u201d\u00a0 As we see on screen, Paul proves himself more than an adept student and excels behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>As Dino, Dominic Cooper is perfectly cast as the bad boy.\u00a0 Slick with attitude and swagger, Cooper brings an arrogant rage to Dino that works perfectly in the story dynamic and rivalry.\u00a0\u00a0 Described by Waugh as \u201ca wonderful talent\u201d, Imogen Poots similarly has a depth that makes Julia indispensable in Tobey\u2019s world, providing a confident, yet thrill seeking and sense of wide-eyed wonder that resonates with an audience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1266\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Need-for-Speed-2-400x263.jpg\" alt=\"Need for Speed - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Need-for-Speed-2-400x263.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Need-for-Speed-2-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Need-for-Speed-2.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Outrageous fun comes in the form of Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek and Scott Mescudi who, as Joe, Finn and Benny respectively provide not only all the on-screen mechanical support and comaraderie for Paul\u2019s Tobey but add levels of inherent humor with their collective chemistry.\u00a0 Mescudi is a particular stand-out as the smart-ass Army reserve pilot who always seems to acquire much needed air support to provide \u201ceyes in the sky\u201d on Tobey\u2019s cross-country journey.\u00a0 And yes, just like everyone went to driving school, Mescudi also went to flight school and is actually flying some of the planes we see on screen.<\/p>\n<p>Scene-stealing is an over-the-top Jack Nicholson-esque Michael Keaton who mesmerizes with insanity as Monarch.\u00a0 Genius performance and caricature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1923\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-keaton.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - keaton\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-keaton.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-keaton-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But NEED FOR SPEED is all about just that &#8211; speed &#8211; and that means good old-fashioned car stunts and racing.\u00a0 For that, no one is better than Scott Waugh and his stunt coordinator Lance Gilbert.\u00a0 Waugh and Gilbert are stunt royalty in the film industry.\u00a0 Second generation, their fathers Fred Waugh and Mickey Gilbert, are legends.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018They were the real cowboys\u2019 and they were hard core stuntmen. . .[they] were the real deal.\u00a0 The stuff that they did, they were getting really wrecked and hurt and doing things that were really pushing the envelope.\u201d\u00a0 It is this world that carved Scott and Lance and shaped them as stuntmen, stunt coordinators and in Waugh\u2019s case, director.<\/p>\n<p>Waugh is not a director who believes in CG.\u00a0 Already lauded for his action heavy co-direction with Mike \u201cMouse\u201d McCoy in \u201cAct of Valor\u201d which showcased real-life Navy Seals in a fictional tale involving extraction situations and saving the world, Waugh is a staunch believer in \u201cold school\u201d.\u00a0 And when it comes to cars and racing, \u201cin a car movie, it should be all practical, it should be all real.\u00a0 And we can hire guys like Lance to come up with stuff that\u2019s real that we can do practically.\u00a0 I just felt like when we conceived this film, I really wanted to do a throwback to the movies that Lance and I grew up on that were the ones we still quote today as the greatest car movies of all time.\u00a0 Which is \u2018Bullitt\u2019. Which is \u2018Vanishing Point\u2019.\u00a0 Which is \u2018Smokey &amp; The Bandit\u2019, \u2018The French Connection.\u2019 . . .Why are they still the best? . . .The number 1 real is, it\u2019s all real.\u00a0 It\u2019s the 60&#8217;s, the 70&#8217;s, you didn\u2019t do CG.\u00a0 You go and you look and there\u2019s no big music montage.\u00a0 It\u2019s just motor noise and it\u2019s cars.\u00a0 And it\u2019s great. It\u2019s something that we really focused on throughout the whole film.\u201d\u00a0 Key for both Waugh and Gilbert is that \u201ca car can do what we see it do in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1928\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-7.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - print 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-7.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-7-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Opting for the 60&#8217;s muscle cars and the European super cars instantly recognizable to fans of fast cars and the video game, the hero car was none other than the 2013 Shelby GT500 &#8211; the 50th anniversary edition of the 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby.\u00a0 Seven cars were built for the film.\u00a0 Also showcased is the \u201869 ford Gran Torino, \u201868 Chevy Camaro and \u201866 Pontiac GTO.\u00a0 When it came to European super cars, manufacturers provided CAD files on each car so that they could be built and customized for the stunts.\u00a0 Swedish Koenigsegg Agera R, Lamborghini Elemento, GTA Spano, Bugatti and McLaren P1 are some of the cars used in NEED FOR SPEED.\u00a0 And as impressive as the cars are, a customized F450 truck called &#8220;The Beast&#8221; co-starred as the utility vehicle driven by Malek&#8217;s Finn and Rodriguez&#8217; Joe to handle of Tobey&#8217;s needs along the way &#8211; including a moving vehicle fueling transfer in which Imogen Poots provided a very able, hanging out the car at 40+ mph assist.<\/p>\n<p>But with fast cars and high intensity old school stunts comes a need for talented and skilled stuntmen and drivers.\u00a0 With Lance Gilbert as stunt coordinator, not only did he call on the old school stuntmen working today, but also high performance race drivers like Steve Holladay.\u00a0 Even the actors themselves were driving in excess of 100 mph although aerial car flips and crashes were left to the professionals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1921\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-4.jpg\" alt=\"Need for Speed - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Need-for-Speed-4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One death-defying stunt bears stand alone mention and be on the lookout for it.\u00a0 \u201cThe Grasshopper\u201d is legendary.\u00a0 The first people &#8211; and perhaps two of the only people to do it until now &#8211; were Fred Waugh and Mickey Gilbert in \u201cOur Winning Season\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 And the younger Waugh and Gilbert knew it had to be included in NEED FOR SPEED as homage to their dads.\u00a0 Planning and executing \u201cThe Grasshopper\u201d was a Herculean effort.\u00a0 According to Waugh, \u201cThese are the things I said to Lance.\u00a0 It\u2019s got to be practical.\u00a0 It\u2019s got to be real.\u00a0 And we\u2019re gonna really jump it and he needs to drive away.\u00a0 That was my constituent.\u00a0 He can\u2019t land and grenade the car.\u00a0 It\u2019s in the middle of the movie.\u00a0 He\u2019s got to land and drive away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Gilbert, \u201cWe had to find the spot that actually told the story too.\u00a0 How [Tobey] gets away. . . [Scott] likes to reverse engineer his action beats and go to a location and try to find the locations that work best for telling the story and also being able to create good action.\u00a0 We were in Detroit and we were driving around and we were finding some ridiculous locations. . . Ultimately we found this other place and it was just a perfect lead into a trap of being able to evade and get away from the police and going up that grassy knoll and jumping across those three lanes of traffic into that park system.\u00a0 It was a pretty critical area because the park itself was littered with trees and all of that.\u00a0 But we found a path that was big enough, wide enough and long enough to fit our criteria that we were looking for.\u00a0 We had to go in and modify the landing zone a little bit to make it a nicer downhill transition to ease on the car.\u00a0 Then we built the car and modified the car to be able to handle the landing.\u00a0 Then we went and tested it.\u00a0 Knew we had it.\u00a0 Knew what speeds we were gonna go do.\u00a0 Then it was just a matter of waiting for our ticket to get punched to go to Detroit to actually film it.\u00a0 We went there and did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With safety being everyone\u2019s major concern and priority with a film like this, Aaron Paul is the first person to give credit to the stuntmen and women of NEED FOR SPEED.\u00a0 While he did his fair share of driving,\u00a0 \u201cThey did all of the heavy lifting.\u00a0 \u2018The Grasshopper\u2019 jump, that was definitely not me and I did not want to do that.\u00a0 When they drove off the cliff and was caught by the helicopter, that was not me.\u00a0 But that was someone!\u00a0 And it\u2019s just terrifying.\u00a0 All of the major crashes were all the stunt men and women.\u00a0 But the majority of the driving and all the races, that was me.\u00a0 A lot of just the driving through the freeway sequences where we\u2019re going about 125mph, that was me.\u00a0 But when we needed to get the speed up to about 180-190, they got the stuntmen and women in there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1926\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-5.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed - print 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-print-5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With NEED FOR SPEED, every time someone puts the pedal to the metal, every time someone gets in a car, every time a car crashes or rolls, we are there, in the car, in the moment, in the crash, in the jump.\u00a0 Your heart leaps.\u00a0 Your heart stops.\u00a0 In all my years, and some of them spent actually working second unit with these stunt guys (including Fred Waugh and Mickey Gilbert), I have never seen an old school practical effects car film as exhilarating and immersive as this.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s \u201cGetaway\u201d was thrilling with its use of practical car stunts, and of course, it was designed by Charles Picerni who is one of the stunt drivers in NEED FOR SPEED, but as it was designed primarily with one car and not a cross country adventure and race, there was less action.\u00a0 But not here.\u00a0 And credit for much of this immersive experience goes to cinematographer Shane Hurlbut who dazzles us with his lensing.<\/p>\n<p>As emotional and beautiful as some of the quieter and introspective moments of the film area, equally lush is his lensing of America as the film travels across some of the most beautiful locations in the country.\u00a0 For Aaron Paul, this was his first cross-country experience and one of the reasons he jumped on board &#8211; the beauty of America.\u00a0 Shooting in seven different states, Hurlbut\u2019s lens captures all of the depth, color and life, the most striking of which for Paul was Moab, Utah.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re like a Mars rover riding around on the surface.\u00a0 It\u2019s gorgeous.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Hurlbut\u2019s imagery is as profound and breathtaking as if you are there, standing on the edge of a canyon, walking through the Salt Flats.\u00a0 But nothing is as impressive as his action lensing.\u00a0 With cinematographers David B. Nowell and Michael Kelem handling aerial imagery (of which there is plenty), Hurlbut and Waugh stay on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1930\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/need-for-speed-cam-car-364x300.jpg\" alt=\"need for speed -
