{"id":1985,"date":"2014-10-12T19:41:27","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T02:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=1985"},"modified":"2014-10-12T22:11:02","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T05:11:02","slug":"kathleen-quinlan-every-now-and-then-something-falls-out-of-the-sky-and-i-get-to-go-play-exclusive-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/interviews\/kathleen-quinlan-every-now-and-then-something-falls-out-of-the-sky-and-i-get-to-go-play-exclusive-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Kathleen Quinlan: &#8220;Every now and then, something falls out of the sky and I get to go play\u201d &#8211; Exclusive 1:1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By:\u00a0 debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I vividly remember the first time I saw Kathleen Quinlan on screen.\u00a0 It was 1979 and \u201cThe Promise\u201d had just opened in movie theatres and there I was opening weekend at the GCC Cinemas in the Plymouth Meeting Mall riveted to the screen.\u00a0 Directed by Gil Cates, thanks to Quinlan\u2019s performance, \u201cThe Promise\u201d set the bar for a specific type of emotional palette, a bar I still use as a base point today.\u00a0 It was also because of that performance that I have long followed Kathleen Quinlan\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1986\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise-244x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kathleen Quinlan - The Promise\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise-244x300.jpg 244w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise-832x1024.jpg 832w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise-300x368.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-The-Promise.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the filming of Blake Edwards\u2019 \u201cSunset\u201d with James Garner, Bruce Willis, Malcolm McDowell, M. Emmett Walsh and other luminaries, I was fortunate enough to be on set and able to briefly meet Quinlan who was incandescent as the somewhat odd yet devious Nancy Shoemaker.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, chatting one-on-one with Kathleen Quinlan is a trip down memory lane for both of us.\u00a0 Recalling her time on \u201cSunset\u201d, Quinlan is quick to remember some of the cast and crew from wistfully remembering James Garner, \u201cOh, Jimmy.\u00a0 He was so wonderful.\u201d to praise for the stuntmen like Neil Summers, Bill Hart, Allan Graf, Roydon Clark and Joe Dunne calling them \u201call those great guys\u201d.\u00a0 And then there are her memories of Robin Williams.\u00a0 \u201cI went to school with Robin. I used to see him every once in a while at some event or something. And I so looked forward to it, because he was from my childhood. . .I had a nickname: Quinny. So, [with very theatric overly emotive tones] I would say, \u201cRobin\u201d and he would say \u201cQuinny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Sunset.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1990\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Sunset-400x223.jpg\" alt=\"Kathleen Quinlan - Sunset\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Sunset-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Sunset-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Sunset.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Kathleen Quinlan isn\u2019t just about the past.\u00a0 With indelible performances that range from Marilyn Lovell in Ron Howard\u2019s \u201cApollo 13&#8243; to Alex Aja\u2019s \u201cThe Hills Have Eyes\u201d to being a proud mother to Michelle Monaghan in \u201cMade of Honor\u201d to the world of strippers, exotic dancers and hookers in \u201cElectra Luxx\u201d under her belt, she is very much about the present.\u00a0 While very selective in the roles she takes, Kathleen Quinlan is as active and hot as ever.\u00a0 As mother to Daniel Radcliffe in Alex Aja\u2019s upcoming \u201cHorns\u201d, Quinlan adds some dark comedic notes to her repertoire.\u00a0 On the hand, with her performance as Nora Valentino in the Pieter Gaspersz directed AFTER, Quinlan strikes with perfection, driving an emotional stake into the heart.<\/p>\n<p>A classically styled drama from writer Sabrina Gennarino and director Pieter Gaspersz, AFTER is thoughtfully absorbing and beautifully acted, focusing not only on the dynamics of \u201cfamily\u201d but the ties that bind and the lengths family goes for one and another.\u00a0 Crediting director Gaspersz and writer Gennarino as \u201cdoing a really good job\u201d,\u00a0\u00a0 AFTER is predicated upon emotionally heavy subject matter, filled with intricacy and complexity within the story and the characters, most notably that of Quinlan s Nora.\u00a0 Walking a rapier line throughout the film where there is a deep dark secret floating of which Nora knows nothing about, Quinlan had her own technique for approaching the character.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-21.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1992\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-21-400x280.jpg\" alt=\"After - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-21-400x280.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-21-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-21.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]hat\u2019s how I approached it, especially since I\u2018m sure Peter [Gaspersz] and Sabrina [Gennarino] told you that there wasn\u2019t a lot of time. It was, like, three days. So, what I chose to do with the \u2018secret\u2019 was just know that somewhere, because of this event in her brain, she just disassociated. She just had to survive for a certain period of time. So, in that respect, I assumed the disassociation and just played it from there. Everything was like it always was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given Quinlan\u2019s wealth of performances, she has had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of directors on film, tv and on stage for an equally diverse range of stories and emotions.\u00a0 With AFTER, first-time feature helmer Gaspersz and his cinematographer Jonathan Hall created a very metaphoric visual palette that spoke directly to the character of Nora; everything around her is light, bright, sunlit until the film\u2019s climactic moment where Nora\u2019s world becomes claustrophobic almost placing her in a stranglehold.\u00a0 So one has to ask about the visual metaphor and it\u2019s impact on her performance.<\/p>\n<p>Laughing, Quinlan notes, \u201cSee, you picked up on that. I didn\u2019t. I was oblivious to all of that, but once I saw it, I thought Peter and Jonathan Hall certainly just did a beautiful job with the look of it. You don\u2019t see a lot of films that look like that anymore.\u00a0 And I like it. It\u2019s rich. It\u2019s got a beautiful gray palette to it. . . Peter is very interesting. . .he lived a lot of this and Peter\u2019s a \u2018guy\u2019 guy. And he had a very strong, but focused perception of what he wanted, but yet, he\u2019s also an athlete and I was an athlete. So, he was like a coach who was there for me. He would say, \u2018Go further. Go further.\u2019 Or, \u2018Would you try this?\u2019.\u00a0 Or, if I went up to him and said, \u2018Look, can I just have one for free? Can I just try something?\u2019 and he\u2019d say, \u2018Yeah,\u00a0 go ahead. Do it. Do it.\u2019\u00a0 So, he was like my team, you know? He was rooting for me and I felt like he had my back. He wasn\u2019t afraid to come up to me and say, \u2018No, I don\u2019t like that\u2019 or \u2018Let\u2019s not go there.\u2019 I just think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to jump on a horse like that for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1994\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51-400x166.jpg\" alt=\"After - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51-400x166.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51-1024x426.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/After-51.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWritten by Sabrina Gennarino, AFTER bodes very specific, very fine-tuned, very believable characters and emotional ranges that resonate deeply, requiring performances that master the family dynamics at play.\u00a0 According to Quinlan, \u201cSabrina and Peter picked really wonderful [actors]. I mean, Adam Scarimbolo. You know, Pablo Schreiber. . .Wasn\u2019t he amazing?\u00a0 Pablo, who scares the hell out of me in \u2018Orange is the New Black.\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019m going to have to talk to him about that! [chastisingly laughing]\u00a0 \u2018Now, Pablo \u2026!\u2019\u00a0 And Darrin Henson.\u00a0 They were all so good.\u00a0 And whenever there was lighting going on or somebody wasn\u2019t in the scene, we\u2019d just hang out, outside or in the trailers, like a family. You just hang out. Literally, we were just in this one house for the longest time. So, there was nothing else going on.\u201d\u00a0 Quick to point out that although playing mom in AFTER, Quinlan wasn\u2019t asked to do any real cooking on or off the set.\u00a0 \u201cThank god Sabrina\u2019s parents cooked one night!\u00a0 And they\u2019re Italian.\u00a0 And they used to have a restaurant.\u00a0 We went over to their house for dinner. It was unbelievable. We just ate so well. I couldn\u2019t stand!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Different than on most sets where \u201cyou don\u2019t always get close . . .a lot of people just run in their dressing rooms and lock the door\u201d with AFTER it was a true family experience.\u00a0 The sad part, however, is that \u201cyou get very close and then \u2018Poof\u2019, they\u2019re gone. It took me the longest time to understand that. Like I didn\u2019t realize that that\u2019s the way it went.\u00a0 I thought we were going to be in touch forever and ever, but it doesn\u2019t work like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, just what was it about AFTER and the character of Nora, or any role for that matter, that entices Quinlan from the start?\u00a0 \u201cI look for a story.\u00a0 And I look for a writer that can flesh out each character.\u00a0 So, I like to see that all of the characters are different and fleshed out.\u00a0 I look for myself, as an actor, something that I can challenge myself with, that I can push myself, and exercise what I have.\u00a0 Because I can\u2019t just play somebody who washes the dishes and does the laundry.\u00a0 I say \u2018I can do that at home! [laughing]\u00a0 \u2018What do you need me for that?\u2019\u00a0 So, I look for a challenge and it\u2019s fascinating now because the medium has opened up so much. The game &#8211; boy it\u2019s completely changed\u2026the rules are out the window. Anybody can be a filmmaker.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 But at the end of the day, \u201cSomething just hits me about certain projects. I like to do comedy, because everybody, most people within the industry, don\u2019t think of me as comedic.\u00a0 And the few times I\u2019ve been able to do it, it\u2019s been really fun.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying I\u2019m certainly brilliant at it, but I get a big kick out of it and like to not take things so seriously. I tend to go watch a lot of comedies.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1988\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown-400x171.jpg\" alt=\"Kathleen Quinlan - Breakdown\" width=\"400\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown-400x171.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown-1024x438.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Breakdown.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nCalling herself \u201cspoiled\u201d, Quinlan admits \u201cI grew up in a great time with great directors &#8211; Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, you know.\u00a0 Just one after the other.\u00a0 I love that old school of just really fleshing out every department and everybody\u2019s just trying to make a great piece of sculpture.\u00a0\u00a0 But I do find that the younger people that are very film savvy are the same. They love that, so that\u2019s fun.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And just where does Pieter Gaspersz fall as a director?\u00a0 \u201cOh my lord, [Pieter and Sabrina] have enough passion to light up New York City, I\u2019m telling you!\u00a0 They\u2019re relentless. They\u2019re just relentless about getting this out there and I so admire that courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Courage is the word with AFTER as it takes place in a post 9\/11 world, tackling a very sensitive and touchy subject for so many, something what often creates trepidation for many actors.\u00a0 \u201cI have a lot of trepidation almost on every project because really, you just get kind of thrown into this mix of people and you don\u2019t really know who\u2019s who or what\u2019s what.\u00a0 But as far as the subject matter, [with AFTER]\u00a0 I felt a lot of responsibility. A lot of responsibility, especially being a California girl. . .New York gave me a lot as a young actor, so I always felt this sense that I wanted to give something back.\u00a0 And I felt that maybe I could pay some tribute this way [with AFTER].\u00a0 Like Peter and Sabrina say very accurately, we have no corner on grief.\u00a0 The theme is loss. Everybody has some of that by virtue of being human, but there\u2019s a responsibility. But I tend to gravitate towards real stories like that. I\u2019m not even a good fiction reader. [laughing]\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Unabashedly stating \u201cI like to read biographies and history\u201d, Quinlan astutely notes, \u201cOh my lord, I don\u2019t need anything made up! This life is enough to bowl you over ten times!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Made-of-Honor.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-bg0VRjWz\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1989\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Made-of-Honor-400x260.jpg\" alt=\"Kathleen Quinlan - Made of Honor\" width=\"400\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Made-of-Honor-400x260.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Made-of-Honor-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Kathleen-Quinlan-Made-of-Honor.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Never one to take anything for granted, Kathleen Quinlan is grateful for the gifts that acting has given her.\u00a0 \u201cThe greatest gift has been an eclectic education.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t good in school.\u00a0 I tried really hard.\u00a0 I was dyslexic and didn\u2019t know it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have, oddly enough, great storage and retrieval, so I was not able to spout off all of the history facts willy-nilly like some people can.\u00a0\u00a0 So, school was not successful for me, but I loved to learn.\u00a0 And I didn\u2019t know that you could be a different kind of a learner. So, in acting, whether you\u2019re reading a play by Ibsen or meeting Marilyn Lovell or Jim Lovell, one of the great pioneers of our universe, or whatever it is. . .I\u2019ve gotten a smattering of great education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for what\u2019s ahead for Kathleen Quinlan, the sky is the limit.\u00a0 \u201cIf I had my druthers, I would love to find a really well-written sort of cable series that sort of works three months out of the year.
