Mayer was the legendary head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio with &#8220;more stars than there are in heaven.&#8221; He gave the world stars like Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, and Norma Shearer, along with more fabled actors, producers, directors, and designers, while making MGM the home to some of the famous films in history, \u201cGone With the Wind\u201d, \u201cThe Wizard of Oz\u201d, and \u201cSingin\u2019 in the Rain\u201d among them. And he did all of this in Culver City.<\/p>\n<p>Mayer&#8217;s sister, Ida Mayer Cummings, devoted her life to Jewish causes and was such a powerhouse fundraiser in Los Angeles that Bob Hope once quipped Ida was, &#8220;the only woman I know who can grab a man by the lapels through the telephone!&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20072\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20072\" style=\"width: 253px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20072\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/alicia-mayer-head-shot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/alicia-mayer-head-shot.jpg 241w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/alicia-mayer-head-shot-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ALICIA MAYER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the family historian, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.TheFilmColony.com\"><strong>ALICIA MAYER<\/strong><\/a> (great-grandniece of Mayer) has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the Louis B. Mayer legacy and is the custodian of hundreds of photos and documents relating to the Cummings and Mayer families. In this special Culver City Centennial event on <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>August 6, 2017, at<\/strong> <strong>2pm <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the Culver City Veteran&#8217;s Auditorium<\/span><\/span>, Alicia will share never before seen photos, memorabilia and insights into MGM and one of Hollywood&#8217;s &#8211; and Culver City\u2019s &#8211; first families.<\/p>\n<p>The history of the Mayer and Cummings families is as rich as the stories being told and films being made at MGM. \u00a0Mayer and his sister Ida Mayer Cummings made their indelible marks on Los Angeles and later saw cinema become the family business through the likes of Jack Cummings (\u201cSeven Brides for Seven Brothers\u201d, \u201cKiss Me Kate\u201d, \u201cThree Little Words\u201d), Sol Baer Fielding (\u201cBright Road\u201d, \u201cJeopardy\u201d, \u201cTrooper Hook\u201d), Mitzi Cummings (MGM writer and Photoplay columnist), Ruth Rowland (interstitial and MGM writer) and Roy Rowland (\u201cOur Vines Have Tender Grapes\u201d, \u201cThe 5,000 Fingers of Mr T\u201d, \u201cMeet Me in Las Vegas\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Rene Mayer Selznick, Louis B. Mayer\u2019s youngest daughter and a successful theater producer in her own right, was the first producer of \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire, launching Marlon Brando\u2019s career. And what about the name of Selznick? Sound familiar? \u00a0Irene married film producer David O. Selznick and they had two sons, L. Jeffrey Selznick and Daniel Mayer Selznick. Jeffrey is known for being a champion of film restoration through the Louis B. Mayer Foundation and in association with Eastman House. Daniel is an award-winning film and theater producer, writer and columnist. The David O.
