{"id":223,"date":"2014-09-28T10:45:25","date_gmt":"2014-09-28T17:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=223"},"modified":"2014-10-07T10:53:18","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T17:53:18","slug":"the-boxtrolls-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/the-boxtrolls-2\/","title":{"rendered":"THE BOXTROLLS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By:\u00a0debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those magnificent artisans of Laika are back with their latest production, THE BOXTROLLS.\u00a0 Taking a sliver from the beloved book \u201cHere Be Monsters!\u201d by Alan Snow, Laika CEO and lead animator Travis Knight together with directors Anthony Stacchi and Graham Anable take stop-motion animation to new heights of visionary wonder as they bring the underground world of THE BOXTROLLS to life, achieving a film that is oh-so enchanting and charming thanks to eye-popping visuals, perfect voice casting and a fantastical story for all ages.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-207\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-1-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-1-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-1.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Dickensian town of Cheesebridge is led by its mayor, Lord Portley-Rind, and his cabinet members.\u00a0 Collectively known as \u201cThe White Hats\u201d, they are the cream of the crop among Cheesebridge\u2019s elite.\u00a0\u00a0 Obsessed with cheese over children\u2019s hospitals and even their own children, The White Hats have somewhat questionable values.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the town\u2019s local Fagin, Archibald Snatcher, wants nothing more in life to be a member of The White Hats.\u00a0 Sadly, he doesn\u2019t have the breeding or, in cheese terms, proper aging, not to mention being severely allergic to cheese.\u00a0\u00a0 But Snatcher hatches a plan to insure his entry into the brie-tasting, rind-sniffing White Hats.<\/p>\n<p>Nicknamed \u201cthe Trubshaw baby\u201d, the infant son of the town\u2019s local inventor goes missing one night.\u00a0 Snatcher sends out the alarm and fabricates the story that the child was kidnaped by THE BOXTROLLS, a funny little community of box-wearing creatures who live beneath the city.\u00a0\u00a0 Crying \u201cwolf\u201d, Snatcher strikes a deal with Lord Portley-Rind; he will rid the city of all Boxtrolls to keep the children safe.\u00a0 In exchange, Snatcher will be admitted to The White Hats.\u00a0 Deal.\u00a0 Trouble is, the infant wasn\u2019t kidnaped, he was, in fact, rescued by THE BOXTROLLS.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t stop Snatcher from spreading rumors of picked-clean skeletons and &#8211; perish the thought &#8211; emptied cheese reserves, which rumors only grow as the years pass and, in fact, become part of the town\u2019s annual celebrations!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-208\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-2-400x240.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-2-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-2.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Named Eggs because of the Egg box which he wears, Eggs is loved and adored, raised by all the little trolls, but with Fish truly becoming his \u201cfather\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because of Snatcher, THE BOXTROLLS are forced to hide under cover of darkness.\u00a0 Using their boxes as disguises, the rummage through trash bins and abandoned bags and boxes, collecting broken and outcast gadgets for repurposing underground to make fantastical things.\u00a0 This is the only world that our human changeling comes to know and as he grows up, he joins THE BOXTROLLS on their scavenger hunts above.<\/p>\n<p>But one day, Lord Portley-Rind\u2019s daughter Winnifred spies Eggs and follows him.\u00a0 She is initially fearful of THE BOXTROLLS and fears for Eggs, realizing that he is the Trubshaw baby who was taken by them years ago!\u00a0 Wanting to rescue him, Eggs refuses.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t need rescuing.\u00a0 Trying to explain to Eggs about families and fathers and that he is a boy and not a human falls on deaf ears with Eggs.\u00a0 While Winnie bemoans the awfulness that is her father ignoring her, Eggs only knows the love he has had from Fish and Shoe and the rest of his Boxtroll family.\u00a0 And once Winnie sees the underground home of THE BOXTROLLS, she needs no more convincing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-219\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-13-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 13\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-13-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-13-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-13.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As more and more Boxtrolls start disappearing, Snatcher\u2019s braggadocios nature gets even more outlandish while the underground Eden gets darker and more dismal without the community to tend to it.\u00a0 And then the unthinkable happens.\u00a0 Fish and Shoe get captured by Snatcher.\u00a0 Eggs must save them but who can Eggs turn to now for help?\u00a0 The answer is clear &#8211; Winnie.<\/p>\n<p>Can they bring the truth to light? Can they save Fish, Shoe and all the other Boxtrolls?\u00a0 And what about Snatcher?\u00a0 Will his evil-doings be discovered with him getting his cheesy rewards or will he get his White Hat?<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to voicing, Knight, Stacchi and Anable knock it out of the park with the casting of Sir Ben Kingsley as Snatcher (and an alter-ego character as well).\u00a0 The obvious favorite amongst all, as Knight describes it, \u201cIt was very important for us that Snatcher was not a two-dimensional mustachioed twirling villain; that he had layers, that he had dimension.\u00a0 As awful as he is &#8211; and he is awful &#8211; that he still has vulnerability, he still has shreds of humanity left within him. . .But then the question is, \u2018Can he in any way be redeemed?\u2019.\u00a0 And he can\u2019t but he makes that choice and it was important for us that we understand that this villain, we can empathize with him to a degree.\u201d\u00a0 Giving Snatcher life, the first thing that Kingsley determined was precisely who Snatcher is.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s ambition.\u00a0 He\u2019s pride.\u00a0 He\u2019s vanity.\u00a0 He\u2019s delusion.\u00a0 He\u2019s addicted to power.\u00a0 He\u2019s socially inept.\u00a0 He is a man who is ill equipped, completely ill equipped to deal with rejection; and denial.\u201d\u00a0 With this in mind, Kingsley creates a very unique and indelible voicing for Snatcher by adding cockney vowels, \u201cstretch[ing] those vowel sounds; started to put an \u201ch\u201d in a word where there shouldn\u2019t be one in order to sound \u201cposh\u201d (in full accent).\u00a0 You almost really see the voice bowing in subservience in a sort of Dickensian way like Uriah Heap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-218\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-12-400x257.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 12\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-12-400x257.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-12-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-12.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Determining Snatcher\u2019s voice to be similar to that of friend of his, Kingsley knew the sound he wanted, but had to work on achieving it.\u00a0 His own worst critic, he himself noted first efforts were \u201ca bit thin.\u00a0 And I tried sitting down.\u00a0 And I said, \u2018You know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m gonna have to lie down.\u2019\u00a0 I lay down and [the voice] came from exactly the right place.\u00a0 Also, lying down stopped me making physical gestures. [What] we tend to do when we talk, we add, we augment, we do things with out bodies to underline what we\u2019re saying and the animators aren\u2019t interested in that.\u00a0 What good is that to them?\u00a0 They just want to hear.\u00a0 So the stiller my body was and the more relaxed it was, then it all started to come through the voice.\u00a0 Just a simple device.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never used it before.\u00a0 I might use it again.\u201d\u00a0 The result is distinctive and emotionally evocative embodying the dregs that is Snatcher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-209\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-3-400x242.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-3-400x242.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-3-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-3.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Playing on the strength that is Winnie, Elle Fanning is no stranger to the Laika family and the stop motion process, given sister Dakota voiced \u201cCoraline\u201d several years ago and Elle was fortunate enough to go through the process years ago with her.\u00a0 Like Kingsley, Fanning defined who Winnie is when arriving at a proper voice.\u00a0 \u201cWinnie is a 9 year old girl and her dad is the mayor of Cheesebridge. . .She\u2019s kind of the elite.\u00a0 She can be spoiled at times.\u00a0 I think the audience will probably want to not like her in the beginning because she\u2019s definitely bratty.\u00a0 But you get to see her sensitive side come out as the movie progresses and you realize that she just wants attention from her dad because he is too distracted with cheese.\u00a0 She\u2019s just trying to help Eggs realize he\u2019s a boy and not a Boxtroll.\u00a0 She means well.\u00a0 She\u2019s not mean-spirited at all.\u00a0 She\u2019s just a little spoiled.\u201d\u00a0 With that in mind, Fanning, the non-Brit among the major voice cast, adopts a posh upper-crust British accent that heralds independence and often defiance, making Winnie a perfect heroine.<\/p>\n<p>A surprise voice is that of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d Isaac Hempstead Wright who, as Eggs, brings all the fun and adventure of a young boy to the character while allowing us to hear childlike fear and glee.\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful performance that captures the innocence of a child having been raised with love.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-217\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-11-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 11\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-11-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-11-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-11.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Supporting voice cast is equally impressive starting with Jared Harris as Lord Portley-Rind.\u00a0 Months ago I spoke with him about another film but he couldn\u2019t help but talk about THE BOXTROLLS, calling Lord Portley-Rind \u201cextremely stuffy\u201d and \u201cfun to find a voice for\u201d.\u00a0 Scene stealing voice performances come from Richard Ayoade and Nick Frost who, as Snatcher\u2019s henchmen Mr. Pickles and Mr. Trout, respectively, are hilarious.\u00a0 (And make sure you stay through the credits for a fun \u201cEaster Egg\u201d with these two!\u00a0 Other brief, but notable voicings come from actors like Simon Pegg, Toni Collette, Laraine Newman, Jim Cummings and Tom Kenny.<\/p>\n<p>Adapted for the screen by Irene Brignull and Adam Pava, the script only pulls a small idea from Snow\u2019s book.\u00a0 A major difference is that the character of Winnie is original to the film while Cheesebridge is an alternative to literature\u2019s Ratbridge.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With dense plots points and emotional beats that are \u201can artful blend of darkness and light and intensity and warmth and heart and emotion and humor\u201d there is a roller coaster of up and down where the joy and elation you feel by film\u2019s end is more powerful and staying thanks to the journey that precedes.\u00a0\u00a0 Characters, both human and non-human are very human, which means they have flaws.\u00a0 Not shying away from tough subject matters, THE BOXTROLLS embraces the ideals of good and evil, family, love, friendship, bullying, class systems, even genocide but all done in a family friendly way with visual metaphor complementing dialogue and character structure.\u00a0 Giving Cheesebridge itself a more \u201csteampunk\u201d aura helps fuel the plot points and allow for that visual metaphor to explode.\u00a0 Important to producer\/lead animator Travis Knight was that \u201cwe could layer on the metaphor and the meaning and how that plays into society as well. . .We want all members of the family to have something they can grasp on to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-212\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-6-400x223.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-6-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-6-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-6.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The magic of THE BOXTROLLS is the stop-motion and the detail of hand-craftsmanship that goes into building and creating each and every character, building, cheese wheel.\u00a0 From the film\u2019s opening frame and a close-up of gold soutache braid on a bright red coat cuff belonging to Snatcher, you are visually spellbound.\u00a0 As with all three of Laika\u2019s stop-motion films [\u201cCoraline\u201d and \u201cParanorman\u201d preceding THE BOXTROLLS], I myself watched with the wide-eyed wonder of a child, silently and sometimes not so silently, oohing and aahing at each new visionary wonder.<\/p>\n<p>The individual Boxtrolls are beyond adorable with each cuter than the last.\u00a0 Be warned, Fish and Oil Can will steal your heart, as will the adorable Shoe.\u00a0 Each has personality, a touch of whimsy.\u00a0 The anthropomorphic aspects and traits of each is undeniably rich and emotive while the underground world has a carnivalesque feel to it all set under a twinkling starry night sky created by the more mechanically inclined Boxtrolls like Sparky.\u00a0 Up top, the Dickensian world of Cheesebridge is fully realized with skewed and tilted shapes and boxy structures with everything but for women\u2019s rounded skirts and wheels of cheese in a box shape, creating a wonderful visual metaphor for \u201cthinking outside the box\u201d.\u00a0 With Laika, it\u2019s not just about making the puppets and stop-motion but pushing the envelope with action, showing us just what stop-motion can do.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just pretty detailed puppetry and sets.\u00a0 Everything is fully interactive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-214\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-8-400x227.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 8\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-8-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-8-350x200.jpg 350w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-8-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-8.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pushing the envelope creatively, one of the challenges the artisans of Laika met was that of designing the Boxtroll puppets with retractable arms, heads and legs.\u00a0 Also, eyes are now more reflective with emotion.\u00a0 As is the case with each film, Laika also develops new technology or new advancements of exiting technology that allows them to dazzle us further with visual wonders.\u00a0 This time it\u2019s RP &#8211; rapid prototyping &#8211; the advanced development of which allowed for the beautiful ballroom scene blending stop-motion with minimal CG with 360 degree dancing among multiple characters, making the stereoscopic 3D lensing even more dramatic.\u00a0 With the RP, the Laika wizards have also found a way to \u201ctrick\u201d the 3D printer aspect of RP into not only detecting color, but printing it.\u00a0 Previously, although RP was able to rapidly produce interchangeable faces for puppets, each face still required hand painting once produced.\u00a0 The new advancements now save that step but for color enhancements or shadings that may be required or desired.\u00a0 Thanks to RP, THE BOXTROLLS boasts over 53,000 individual facial parts of which 15,000 were just for Eggs.\u00a0 And of those 15,000 facial parts, Eggs had the potential for over 1.4 million facial expressions.\u00a0 Snatcher had the potential for over 1.18 million expressions<\/p>\n<p>Production designer Paul Lasaine creates a world of wonder with all 79 individual sets on every level while costume designer Deborah Cook again creates marvelous fabrications for costume design and makes over 200 individual costumes.\u00a0 Even Fanning marvels at the meticulous nature of Laika productions noting, \u201cI feel like everyone needs to see how they make it because it\u2019s unbelievable!\u00a0 All these tiny little things.\u00a0 There\u2019s a miniature knitter and there\u2019s a tiny little lady and she just knits little mittens and sweaters for the puppets!\u201d\u00a0 Unbelievable is right when you consider there are more than 20,000 handmade props including 55 different cheese props, not to mention 190 different puppets.<\/p>\n<p>Just to amaze you a bit more, THE BOXTROLLS was lensed with a total of 56 digital cameras including a Canon 5D, a Red live-action and 2 Sony HD cameras, and used\u00a0 892 lights in lighting the 79 different sets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-213\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-7-400x208.jpg\" alt=\"Boxtrolls - 7\" width=\"400\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-7-400x208.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-7-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Boxtrolls-7.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Completing the world of THE BOXTROLLS is the work of composer Dario Marianelli who marks his animated feature scoring debut here.\u00a0 Sumptuous and rich, even the score captures the elusive qualities of seeing the world uniquely from the eyes of a child or the eyes of an innocent.\u00a0 Adding some fun is Eric Idle who pens a few little numbers that add light-hearted humor to the musical proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Meticulous and magical.\u00a0 Playful.
