In addition to being the celebration that honors artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision, the Spirit Awards is the primary fundraiser for Film Independent\u2019s year-round programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aolmail_MsoNormal\"><i><\/i>Clips from the ceremony are available on Film Independent\u2019s YouTube\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/filmindependent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">channel<\/a>\u00a0after the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aolmail_MsoNormal\">This year\u2019s major winners were\u00a0<i>Get Out<\/i>, which won Best Feature and Best Director;\u00a0<i>Call Me by Your Name<\/i>, which won Best Male Lead and Best Cinematography;\u00a0<i>I, Tonya<\/i>,<i>\u00a0<\/i>which won Best Supporting Female and Best Editing;\u00a0<i>Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri<\/i>, which won Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Male;\u00a0<i>Lady Bird<\/i>, which won Best Screenplay;\u00a0<i>Ingrid Goes West<\/i>, which won Best First Feature;\u00a0<i>The Big Sick<\/i>, which won Best First Screenplay;\u00a0<i>Life and Nothing More<\/i>, which won the John Cassavetes Award;\u00a0<i>Faces Places<\/i>\u00a0which won Best Documentary and\u00a0<i>A Fantastic Woman<\/i>, which won Best International Film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aolmail_MsoNormal\">The 11th annual Robert Altman Award was given to one film\u2019s director, casting director and ensemble cast.\u00a0<i>Mudbound<\/i>\u00a0director Dee Rees received this award, along with casting directors Billy Hopkins and Ashley Ingram as well as cast members Jonathan Banks, Mary J. Blige, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund,\u00a0Jason Mitchell, Rob Morgan and Carey Mulligan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aolmail_MsoNormal\">The 2018 Roger and Chaz Ebert Foundation Fellowship annually selects an outstanding filmmaker and participant in Project Involve, Film Independent\u2019s longest running diversity and mentorship program, now in its 25th year. Bonnie Tiburzi Caputo joined American Airlines in 1973 at age 24, becoming the first female pilot to fly for a major U.S. airline. In her honor, the Bonnie Award recognizes a mid-career female director with a $50,000 unrestricted grant sponsored by American Airlines. Finalists for the award were\u00a0<b>So Yong Kim<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Lynn Shelton<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jonathan Olshefski<\/b>, director of\u00a0<i>Quest<\/i>, received the Jeep\u00e2\u00a0Truer Than Fiction Award. The award is presented to an emerging director of non-fiction features who has not received significant recognition. The award is in its 23rd year and includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant sponsored by the Jeep brand for the first year. Finalists for the award were\u00a0<b>Shevaun Mizrahi<\/b>, director of\u00a0<i>Distant Constellation\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<b>Jeff Unay<\/b>, director of<i>\u00a0The Cage Fighter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Justin Chon<\/b>,<i>\u00a0<\/i>director of\u00a0<i>Gook<\/i>, received the Kiehl\u2019s Someone to Watch Award. The award recognizes talented filmmakers of singular vision who have not yet received appropriate recognition. The award is in its 24th year and includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant sponsored by Kiehl\u2019s Since 1851 for the fourth consecutive year. Finalists for the award were\u00a0<b>Amman Abbasi<\/b>, director of\u00a0<i>Dayveon\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<b>Kevin Phillips<\/b>, director of\u00a0<i>Super Dark Times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Summer Shelton<\/b>\u00a0received the Piaget Producers Award. The award honors emerging producers who, despite highly limited resources, demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision required to produce quality, independent films. The annual award, in its 21st year, includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant sponsored by Piaget for the 11th year. Finalists for the award were\u00a0<b>Giulia Caruso\u00a0<\/b>&amp;<b>\u00a0Ki Jin Kim<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Ben Leclair<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Matty Brown<\/b>\u00a0received the Seattle Story Award. The award is for a filmmaker who exhibits innovation, diversity and uniqueness of vision while having a history of transforming perspectives through rich stories. The award includes a $25,000 cash grant, sponsored by Visit Seattle, to create a short film inspired by Seattle\u2019s deep textures and independent spirit.
