Top honors were handed out Saturday, February 8th at the 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony, one of the final two awards shows of the year; the Academy Awards being the other.\u00a0 The Farewell, Uncut Gems<\/i>,\u00a0The Lighthouse<\/i>,\u00a0Marriage Story<\/i>,\u00a0Judy, Booksmart<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0See You Yesterday<\/i>.\u00a0Give Me Liberty<\/i>,\u00a0American Factory<\/i>\u00a0and Parasite\u00a0<\/i>were just some of the films which received awards at the ceremony, which was held on the beach in Santa Monica. In addition to being the celebration that honors artist-driven films made with an economy of means by filmmakers whose films embody diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision, the Spirit Awards is the primary fundraiser for Film Independent\u2019s year-round programs.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s major winners were\u00a0Uncut Gems<\/i>, which won Best Director, Best Male Lead and Best Editing;\u00a0The Farewell<\/i>, which won Best Feature and Best Supporting Female;\u00a0The Lighthouse<\/i>, which won Best Supporting Male and Best Cinematography;\u00a0Marriage Story<\/i>\u00a0which won the Robert Altman Award and Best Screenplay;\u00a0Judy<\/i>\u00a0which won Best Female Lead;\u00a0Booksmart\u00a0<\/i>which won Best First Feature; See You Yesterday<\/i>\u00a0which won Best First Screenplay;\u00a0Give Me Liberty<\/i>\u00a0which won the John Cassavetes Award;\u00a0American Factory<\/i>\u00a0which won Best Documentary; and\u00a0Parasite\u00a0<\/i>which won Best International Film.<\/p>\n

The ceremony aired live on IFC, streamed on\u00a0@FilmIndependent<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0@IFC<\/a> Twitter pages.\u00a0 Clips from the ceremony are available on Film Independent\u2019s YouTube channel.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 13th annual Robert Altman Award was given to one film\u2019s director, casting director and ensemble cast. This year, Marriage Story\u00a0<\/i>director Noah Baumbach received this award, along with casting directors Douglas Aibel and Francine Maisler as well as cast members Alan Alda, Laura Dern, Adam Driver, Julie Hagerty, Scarlett Johansson, Ray Liotta, Azhy Robertson and Merritt Wever.<\/p>\n

In her honor, the Bonnie Award recognizes a mid-career female director with a $50,000 unrestricted grant sponsored by American Airlines. Finalists for the award were\u00a0Marielle Heller\u00a0and\u00a0Lulu Wang.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Mollye Asher\u00a0received the Producers Award<\/strong>. The award honors emerging producers who, despite highly limited resources, demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision required to produce quality, independent films. The annual award, in its 23rd year, includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant. Finalists for the award were\u00a0Krista Parris\u00a0and\u00a0Ryan Zacarias.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Rashaad Ernesto Green, director of\u00a0Premature<\/em>, received the Someone to Watch Award<\/strong>. The award recognizes talented filmmakers of singular vision who have not yet received appropriate recognition. The award is in its 26th year and includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant presented by Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, a brand committed to celebrating those pushing the boundaries of their craft. Finalists for the award were\u00a0Ash Mayfair, director of\u00a0The Third Wife\u00a0and\u00a0Joe Talbot, director of\u00a0The Last Black Man in San Francisco.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
