{"id":2802,"date":"2010-08-06T11:39:59","date_gmt":"2010-08-06T18:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=2802"},"modified":"2014-10-15T11:45:06","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T18:45:06","slug":"exclusive-interview-with-louie-psihoyos-director-of-the-cove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/interviews\/exclusive-interview-with-louie-psihoyos-director-of-the-cove\/","title":{"rendered":"EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LOUIE PSIHOYOS, DIRECTOR OF THE COVE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A modest man, Louie Psihoyos may downplay accolades bestowed upon him for the excellence of his film, THE COVE, but one thing he is not shy about is his passion for the environment.\u00a0\u00a0 To him, it is a top priority for all of us to be concerned about the Earth and the causal relationships between man and nature.\u00a0 Technically, THE COVE is a superlative piece of filmmaking and is os such high caliber on all fronts, I expect not only Academy Award nominations, but Oscar gold to be placed into Psihoyos\u2019 hands.\u00a0 Now, while the dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan is the catalyst for THE COVE, the messages and information imparted go far beyond that.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2804\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/The_Cove_Poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"The_Cove_Poster\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/The_Cove_Poster-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/The_Cove_Poster-691x1024.jpg 691w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/The_Cove_Poster-1400x2074.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/The_Cove_Poster-300x444.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Hello again, Louie.\u00a0 We just came from rounds, but I saved most of my questions knowing we would have this 1:1 opportunity together.\u00a0 First, I have to say, THE COVE is one of the most impressive films I have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>LP: Thank you.\u00a0 Thank you so much.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: I don\u2019t know if Karen [film\u2019s publicist] told you, but each year for the LA Film Festival, I always do an LAFF Must See Festival Films column that comes out opening day of\u00a0 the fest.\u00a0 And this year &#8211; THE COVE &#8211; my number one pick of the entire festival.<\/p>\n<p>LP: Thank you.\u00a0 I so appreciate that.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: I\u2019ve already received a ton of feedback from readers who noted that \u201cThat\u2019s not even a competition film.\u201d\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not.\u00a0 But that\u2019s how incredible the film is.\u00a0 And the screenings are free.\u00a0 You don\u2019t even have to buy a ticket.\u00a0 Go see it. [Of course, anyone that missed THE COVE at festivals around the country, now have to buy that ticket.\u00a0 And I guarantee you, it will be one the most worthwhile uses for $10.00 you will ever have.]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2806\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cove_-_louie_150_209_000.jpeg\" alt=\"cove_-_louie_150_209_000\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cove_-_louie_150_209_000.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cove_-_louie_150_209_000-90x90.jpeg 90w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/cove_-_louie_150_209_000-125x125.jpeg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>LP: That\u2019s cool.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: You are very modest for a first time filmmaker.\u00a0 This is a top notch, high quality film.\u00a0 On top of the message it\u2019s sending, technically the film is superlative.\u00a0 Given your \u201cspecial ops\u201d technique of pulling this adventure off and making this film, from a filmmaking standpoint, how did you go about approaching the film and putting together your technical film team, not to mention your OPS team?<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0\u00a0 Let me put this at two different levels.\u00a0 There\u2019s getting the footage and then finishing the movie.\u00a0 Geoff Richman, spectacular editor.\u00a0 Really quick, really brilliant.\u00a0 The whole time he was doing it, sometimes he was just so absolutely taken with what we had.\u00a0 Mark Monroe, great writer.\u00a0 Anybody that thinks that they can go out and make a great film without a great editor and a great writer, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s possible.\u00a0 We had a good story there to begin with, but they made it great by helping focus in.\u00a0 I was really instrumental in trying to keep the story complicated.\u00a0 I never wanted to dumb it down and simplify it.\u00a0 To me, that\u2019s the beauty of it &#8211; that it\u2019s complex.\u00a0 It\u2019s textured.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just a movie about THE COVE, it involves mercury poisoning, over-fishing.\u00a0 Ric\u2019s backstory, his story of redemption.\u00a0 Even Mandy [Cruikshank] and Kirk\u2019s [Krack] story, that little sequence where you see them bonding with whales and dolphins.\u00a0 These are just emotional visceral things that I really wanted to keep in the film because they were so important to me.\u00a0 When you live something and you have a feeling for it, I had to fight, even with, god please them, these great filmmakers &#8211; much more experienced than me &#8211; but I felt like what I was trying to bring to the film was emotional complexity that is fairly hard to describe.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, why you want to do this if it\u2019s just based on emotion.\u00a0 But that\u2019s important to me.\u00a0 I think most of film, to me, is an emotional experience.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: You\u2019re aiming for an emotional reaction and connection with the audience.\u00a0 Without that emotion, you\u2019re not going to connect.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Right.\u00a0 But you\u2019re always battling.\u00a0 The people that haven\u2019t been there or maybe they don\u2019t see the film quite like you do.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of friendly tension on post-production trying to figure out what exactly the story is and what elements you want to keep in there.\u00a0 I think ultimately what happened here is, usually when you have a film and there\u2019s too many people on it, it gets diluted.\u00a0 But I think in this case everybody understood what the real story was.\u00a0 We started out with the cove.\u00a0 Once we decided that, okay, we had this Ocean\u2019s 11 theme going on.\u00a0 How is that pulled together?\u00a0 We had the footage.\u00a0 What thing that stuck with Jeff Richmond is that we had to edit part of it in New York because he is still teaching at NYU film school.\u00a0 We had this wonderful footage of Mandy sort of breaking down crying when this dolphin escapes from the cove.\u00a0 He [Richmond] asked, \u201cHow are we going to illustrate that?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat do you mean, how are we going to illustrate that?\u00a0 We have this shot with four different angles.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou\u2019re kidding me?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cOh yeah, just look at this stuff!\u201d\u00a0 Richmond was like \u201cThat\u2019s incredible.\u00a0 You guys have so much footage.\u201d\u00a0 We had 600 hours that we had to get down to 90 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: How many cameras were you using?\u00a0 I know you had 3 up on the rocks.\u00a0 You had, I think, 4 that I could detect under water.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 We had, oh boy, we had&#8230;. See the thing is we cut that film.\u00a0 We went in 7 nights into the cove.\u00a0 Sometimes we only had one or two cameras, depending on how many guards were in the lagoon.\u00a0 If we had the run of the place, we would try to get 4 or 5 cameras in.\u00a0 But sometimes we could only get a couple, one or two.\u00a0 Or we would break one on the way in.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want the foam to show up.\u00a0 These were rocks made out of foam. . .<\/p>\n<p>[As part of the special ops and infiltration into the cove, Industrial Light and Magic became involved in the project, creating fake foam rocks housing cameras which blended into the rocky cliff terrain ]<\/p>\n<p>DLE: Really good looking rocks by the way.\u00a0 They were realllly good looking.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 They were so good, it was difficult to find them when we went back in.\u00a0 We tried to remember where we put them. We tried to do it a little differently every time.\u00a0 But that was also the fear, too, going back in.\u00a0 If they [the Japanese] did discover a rock, then they would be waiting for us to come back and retrieve it.\u00a0 That was actually almost scarier than putting it in.\u00a0 Putting it in, you got away with it.\u00a0\u00a0 But you didn\u2019t know you really got away with it until you went back to retrieve it.\u00a0 At different times we had two blinds [cameras] across from the cove.\u00a0 We had about four or five positions in the cove that we used 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cameras and then helicopter footage and then one camera down below.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t know how many total cameras it is.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a long time.\u00a0 It took 1 \u00bd years to get that footage.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: I was going to ask how long it took to obtain all the filming.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 About seven trips to Taiji over the course of 1 \u00bd years.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: Let me ask you, if they had caught you while you were doing this, during the night ops and things like that, what would the penalty have been?<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 Conspiracy to disrupt commerce would have been the charge.\u00a0 Almost like a RICO rap.\u00a0 Trespassing.\u00a0 Like Ric says in the movie, they can get you for anything that they want.\u00a0\u00a0 You will confess to it because they\u2019ll keep you freezing and naked in your jail cell.\u00a0 I think Rick says it\u2019s 90% of the confessions happen within the first 28 days you\u2019re in jail.\u00a0 But I think it\u2019s actually more like 95% or 99%.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 There was an article about how many forced convictions they get.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of a miracle that we got away with it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s put it this way.\u00a0 People say, \u201cwould you ever go back to Japan?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t go back.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we would come back out on our own terms.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the things that I kept waiting for in the film.\u00a0 You definitely kept me on the edge of my seat, mounting tension as the mission progresses.\u00a0 I kept waiting through the film to see you guys get caught.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t expecting to see the blood red sea.\u00a0 I thought we might have seen you guys getting caught; the mission wouldn\u2019t have come to fruition.\u00a0 You had that much tension going in this film.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 Which version did you see?\u00a0 A press screening?<\/p>\n<p>DLE: Yes.\u00a0 A press screening.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 Did you stick around for the last credits?\u00a0 The Easter Egg at the very end?<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I stayed through all the credits.\u00a0 I always stay through all the credits.<\/p>\n<p>At the end there\u2019s the footage of Charles with the police.\u00a0 He gets caught with the balloon.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I saw that and thought, \u201cwhat the heck?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 We did get caught and they wanted to know what was in the truck.\u00a0 So we showed them the balloon (a small dirigible) and that\u2019s what really got us off.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: The big blimp.\u00a0 I thought that was brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 It was a funny bit, but they let us get away with it.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Do you see yourself taking the elements and themes of this film and breaking it out into additional films or expanding on them?<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0 What we are going to is DVD extras.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing a DVD extra on mercury poisoning.\u00a0 We have a lot of footage.\u00a0 There\u2019s actually several films in there.\u00a0 There\u2019s Paul Watson just talking.\u00a0 That\u2019s an hour long piece just there.\u00a0 We really just let it run.\u00a0 He\u2019s such an eloquent speaker.\u00a0 He\u2019s so passionate.\u00a0 Roger Payne.\u00a0 There\u2019s another movie there.\u00a0 We filmed whales and singing quite a bit.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of educational pieces in this movie.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: Very much so.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0\u00a0 There\u2019s so much work to do it well.\u00a0 We want to sort of brand ourselves as doing high quality film.\u00a0 We\u2019re working on the DVD extras right now which will be a piece within themselves.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Do you think it will come out in time for Christmas?<\/p>\n<p>LP: Oh yes.\u00a0 Definitely.\u00a0 I think November.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 What would you like the audience to take with them from this film when they leave the theatre?<\/p>\n<p>LP: A lot of things.\u00a0 Not just one thing.\u00a0 I think they should realize that these animals are more sophisticated than most people give them credit for.\u00a0 So that doesn\u2019t mean incarcerate them and teach them to do stupid tricks for our amusement.\u00a0 I want them to realize that we\u2019re polluting the planet and not just dolphins and whales, but polluting things we like to eat.\u00a0 Things at the top of the Earth food chain, we\u2019re jeopardizing our major source of protein &#8211; seafood.\u00a0 And that\u2019s through the burning of fossil fuels.\u00a0 People really need to get that connection.\u00a0 Mercury poisoning is real.\u00a0 It\u2019s getting worse.\u00a0 And it\u2019s not just mercury, it\u2019s lead, cadmium.\u00a0 Basically everything you buy ends up at one point or another back down to the sea.\u00a0 And when I say \u201cyou\u201d, I mean we, us, collectively.\u00a0 We are doing what no wild animal will do.\u00a0 And that\u2019s fouling our own nest.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what I want people to come away with the most is that it\u2019s a really precious resource.\u00a0 We told the story through Ric\u2019s backstory and through dolphins and whales &#8211; the big charismatic megapods &#8211;\u00a0 and people care about those.\u00a0 I do too, but I think the bigger picture is that we\u2019re harming ourselves at the same time.\u00a0 I hope that comes through.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 That was one of the struggles, was how to not point fingers that this is a Japanese problem.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a worldwide problem.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just the Japanese that have to worry about this.\u00a0 It\u2019s everybody.\u00a0 There\u2019s no shortage of bad guys in this movie.\u00a0 The world is getting close enough that we\u2019re one of them.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I want people to take away.\u00a0 To get that connection.\u00a0 Not to feel guilty for going to the dolphin park, but if you again&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not to feel guilty for not knowing that you were polluting the planet but have a sense that there\u2019s a relationship between, for instance, turning on a light &#8211; we get energy from coal.\u00a0 There\u2019s this causal relationship.\u00a0 We\u2019re part of that same chain of events that\u2019s polluting the planet.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: What\u2019s your own mercury level right now?\u00a0 That concerned me when you mentioned that in rounds.<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Right now it\u2019s 3 parts per million which is still a little bit tool high.\u00a0 I still eat certain kinds of things that are lower on the food chain, like, certain kinds of crab.\u00a0 Depending on what the crab eats, you can\u2019t control that. I stopped eating things that walk 20 years ago.\u00a0 I have been a pesceterian and I ate way too much fish in my lifetime.\u00a0 I\u2019m just scary for what it does to us.\u00a0 This doctor told me that it slowly erases what it means to become human.\u00a0 It starts to dull your senses &#8211; sense of touch, peripheral vision, your hearing, your sense of smell.\u00a0 Everything starts to go away.\u00a0 And your memory goes.\u00a0 So, yes, that\u2019s one of the biggest messages I think to take away is to reduce your mercury intake because it really is the most toxic non-radioactive element in the world.\u00a0 I think women really need to worry about that, a lot mor than guys do.\u00a0 A lot of people see this movie and they stop eating seafood after they see it. I say, \u201cdon\u2019t stop eating seafood.\u00a0 Just start eating smarter.\u00a0 Eating lower on the food chain.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s one less zero for every level from swordfish down.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 What would you consider going one level down?<\/p>\n<p>LP:\u00a0\u00a0 One level down from swordfish is tuna.\u00a0 So go down another step further than that.\u00a0 Basically, if the head of the fish and it\u2019s tail can fit on your plate, it\u2019s safe to eat.\u00a0 That means white polit, small bass.\u00a0\u00a0 Go to NRDC, National Resources Defense Council (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/\">www.nrdc.org).<\/a>\u00a0 You can download a seafood guide.\u00a0 Or, you can go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch (<a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/html\/(http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/seafoodwatch.aspx).\">http:\/\/www.montereybayaquarium.org\/cr\/seafoodwatch.aspx).<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 We usually give them out.\u00a0 I just gave out 5000 at recent film festivals.\u00a0 You can download a pocket guide for seafood.\u00a0 Two things to worry about when you\u2019re eating seafood.\u00a0 Sustainability.\u00a0 Toxicity.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to eat something that\u2019s not sustainable and you don\u2019t want to eat it if it\u2019s toxic.\u00a0 So those are the two things to think
