You all probably remember, or at least know of, the beloved television series \u201cFlipper.\u201d\u00a0 An integral part of the success of \u201cFlipper\u201d was Richard O\u2019Barry who, in the 1960’s was the world\u2019s leading authority on dolphin training.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Flipper lagoon, dock and house was actually O\u2019Barry\u2019s and it\u2019s where he trained and cared for the dolphins who took turns playing Flipper.\u00a0 Well cared for and free to swim in open waters, it all came to a screeching halt with the cancellation of the tv show and the dolphins being sent to a seaquarium.\u00a0 It was there that O\u2019Barry\u2019s special dolphin, the one who played the majority of Flipper scenes, Kathy, died in his arms.\u00a0 Contained in a small tank, unable to swim free, engage with humans and exercise properly, according to O\u2019Barry, he truly believes that Kathy finally just gave up from depression.\u00a0\u00a0 And in that one moment, O\u2019Barry knew what his life\u2019s calling would now be – making certain that cestaceans (whales, dolphins) be kept free.\u00a0 Now a self-proclaimed \u201cabolitionist\u201d of dolphin captivity, it is O\u2019Barry\u2019s advocacy and activism that bring us THE COVE.<\/p>\n

I had a chance to sit down with Ric in late June to talk about dolphin advocacy and THE COVE.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Hello again Ric.\u00a0 Hello<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hello!\u00a0 It\u2019s like \u201cGroundhog Day\u201d!\u00a0 I just saw you.<\/p>\n

DLE: I know.\u00a0 I\u2019m like a bad penny that keeps coming back.<\/p>\n

RO: [laughter]<\/p>\n

\"cove_-_ric_2\"DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I am a great admirer of yours and the work you have been doing over the years.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, thank you.\u00a0\u00a0 What publication are you with?<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m actually with 135 different publications, locally and around the world.\u00a0 I\u2019m self-syndicated.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0\u00a0 Well, I hope you get our website information out so people can actually take action there to do something.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve already been on the website and it\u2019s very informative.<\/p>\n

RO: We\u2019re gonna fine tune it before the film comes out.\u00a0\u00a0 Hopefully, if Obama gets enough e-mails , messages, etc., he will actually pick up the phone and do something which no president has ever done.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 [U.S. government] has been a very lame duck over the years in terms of the whaling issues and preservation and things along those lines.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Definitely.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 A big question that I know comes up when I talk about the film already to people is that they find it very surprising that even after hearing your story that you\u2019re such an advocate on behalf of non-captivity for dolphins.\u00a0 Do you believe they should not be in captivity at all?<\/p>\n

\"cove_-_ric_3\"RO:\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m an abolitionist.\u00a0 They do not belong in captivity.\u00a0 Some animals just don\u2019t do well in captivity.\u00a0 Dolphins, which have a larger brain than humans….consider this.\u00a0 If you go to the zoo, any zoo, take a look at the snake exhibit.\u00a0 The snake has a very small brain.\u00a0 Yet a cold-blooded snake is given more consideration than the dolphins in captivity.\u00a0\u00a0 The snake has got tree limbs to climb on and rocks to get under and something similar [to its natural environment].\u00a0 But for the dolphin, which is a sonic creature whose primary sense is sound, is in a concrete box.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t do that to a snake.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t do that.\u00a0 It just wouldn\u2019t fly.\u00a0 And how we were able to get away with this, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Is it stressful [to the dolphins]?\u00a0 Of course, it\u2019s stressful and that\u2019s why the mortality rate of captive dolphins is so high because of the stress-related deaths and stress-related diseases.\u00a0 You go to Europe where it\u2019s cold much of the year and Belgium and France, you find dolphins in Germany, Switzerland…dolphins are inside of a building.\u00a0 They were born in there.\u00a0 They have never seen a wild fish.\u00a0 They have never experienced the rhythm of the sea and the tides and the currents and they think that the roof is the sky.\u00a0 What are they doing here to being with.\u00a0 And the idea is, well, they\u2019re supposed to be educating us.\u00a0 When, in fact, they don\u2019t represent dolphins in the real ecosystem anymore than Mickey Mouse represents a real mouse.\u00a0 It\u2019s a caricature of a dolphin.\u00a0 So it\u2019s all about money.\u00a0 I am opposed to it.\u00a0 I am an abolitionist.<\/p>\n

DLE: Do you see the day ever coming where humans, and I have to use the term very loosely, do you ever see the day when humans will take the time to actually be able to communicate with dolphins in their language with clicks, whistles, and learn that?<\/p>\n

RO: Maybe.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really think about that much.\u00a0 I know people are working on that.\u00a0 With computers, it probably will happen in our lifetime.\u00a0 But communication is a tricky word.\u00a0 You look back to the Greek era when this coin [a solid gold ring made from a Greek coin depicting a dolphin which O\u2019Barry wears] was minted in 225 BC, and the reason it was minted – it was a very common coin at that time – there were many stories of dolphins saving the lives of human beings.\u00a0 If you are going to save the life of somebody, that IS communication.\u00a0 So it depends on what you mean by communication.\u00a0\u00a0 That is altruism and it\u2019s something that we reserve just for humans, but actually dolphins have been doing that for, we know, thousands of years.\u00a0 Those stories comes from Aristotle and Plato and other reputable sources.\u00a0 That should tell us that [dolphins] don\u2019t belong in captivity.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 How pleased are you with the final product with THE COVE?<\/p>\n

RO: Very.\u00a0 The film represents to me, the light at the end of the tunnel.\u00a0 And the light at the end of the tunnel is not an oncoming train.\u00a0 It\u2019s the sunshine.\u00a0 It\u2019s the thing that will bring this dolphin slaughter down.\u00a0 It\u2019s the thing that will get people to think twice before they buy a ticket for a captive dolphin show.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t even think when they go to these places where the dolphins come from, how\u2019d they get here.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I have refused to ever go see them.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 Good for you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019re a nation of spectators.\u00a0 We expect to be amused and we are teaching our children to do that.\u00a0 So, this film, to answer your question, represents a lot of hope in terms of educating people about that issue and I believe people will think twice before they buy a ticket now to swim with a captive dolphin.\u00a0 That industry, which is huge, is going to be really really pissed.\u00a0 And they are going to do something.\u00a0 They are going to react.\u00a0 Every action has a reaction.\u00a0 And they are going to feel it in their pocketbook now; at least from the people who buy the tickets.\u00a0 So, yeah, I am very pleased with the film.\u00a0 It\u2019s better than I expected.\u00a0 I brought other filmmakers there, or journalists like the BBC, CNN and so forth, but this thing here took off.\u00a0 Now they\u2019re talking about Academy Award.<\/p>\n

DLE: Yes.\u00a0 I was going to say, I thought of that yesterday when the Academy made the announcement that they are opening up the Academy Awards for 10 films a year now instead of 5 for the Best Picture category.\u00a0 I immediately thought of this film as being another \u201cMarch of the Penguins\u201d but with even more. . .<\/p>\n

RO: \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d and \u201cMarch of the Penguins\u201d were shown at Sundance and they didn\u2019t get eight standing ovations.\u00a0 But THE COVE did. So, if that\u2019s any indication of what\u2019s out there….\u00a0 yeah, I\u2019m very very pleased.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think that it would even get into the theatres because I\u2019m on the ground at least six months out of the year and I know what Louie filmed because I was there.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cwell, that\u2019s great if we can get this out there into a theatre.\u00a0 But with a theatre, people have to get in their car and drive to the theatre and stand in line to buy a ticket.\u00a0 Now you have to entertain them.\u00a0 You can\u2019t show them this.\u201d\u00a0 And so the challenge was, I was thinking, that\u2019s the challenge – how do you make this entertaining.\u00a0 But Louie [Psihoyos] surrounded himself with really talented people like [producer] Fisher Stevens.<\/p>\n

DLE: Fisher is wonderful.<\/p>\n

RO: He\u2019s a special guy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then,\u00a0 Mark Monroe.\u00a0\u00a0 Geoff Richman.\u00a0 They made this entertaining and they are winning all the awards based on this entertainment value.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 They really go for that Hitchcockian thriller, building up, building up, building up.\u00a0 People like that.\u00a0 For the benefit of the film and for the dolphins, I think it\u2019s a fantastic way to present this material.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s the best thing that ever happened to the film.\u00a0\u00a0 I think,<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Are there any places besides Taiji where these dolphin slaughters take place?<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 There are two more places.\u00a0 I work for Earth Island Institute.\u00a0 We\u2019re working in the Solomon Islands and also in the Faroe Islands where something similar happens.\u00a0 We have limited resources, so we\u2019re concentrating on this one cove.\u00a0 If we can close it, it will close for a reason and you can take that reason to the Faroe Islands and Solomon Islands and use it against the slaughter and against\u00a0 mercury fishing.\u00a0 They kill the dolphins for meat also.\u00a0 That\u2019s the Achilles Heel.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s going to bring the thing down.\u00a0\u00a0 Faroe Islands gets all the money from Denmark.\u00a0 For all the problems in the Faroe Islands, the solution is Copenhagen.\u00a0 Now when this film plays in theatres in Copenhagen, people will make the connection with the film, so it has an impact.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 Ric, I can\u2019t thank you enough.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already seen the distribution list of the countries that are going to be showing THE COVE.<\/p>\n

RO:\u00a0\u00a0 Luc Besson in France, he\u2019s quite supportive and distributing in France.\u00a0 And he also has a Japanese distribution company, so he\u2019s going there this week.<\/p>\n

DLE:\u00a0\u00a0 I read about Besson\u2019s involvement and distribution.\u00a0 Do you think he\u2019ll have any luck in getting the film into Japanese theatres?<\/p>\n

RO: I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 He only owns one-third of the company but, if he can convince them there is money to be made.\u00a0 If they\u2019re interested in that. . .[ laughter]<\/p>\n
