Uhura in the \u201cStar Trek\u201d tv series and films, and asked her about JJ Abrams venture into the franchise with the \u201cprequel\u201d STAR TREK.<\/p>\n<p>DLE &#8211;\u00a0 So, how do you feel about the new STAR TREK?<\/p>\n<p>NN &#8211; I\u2019m looking forward to seeing it.\u00a0 JJ [Abrams] had invited me to lunch and brought me on the set and surprised the set.<\/p>\n<p>DLE:\u00a0 I bet they all fell over!<\/p>\n<p>NN &#8211; They were in the middle of a scene and one of the actors, I was in his eyesight, although I was moving away, and he just stopped.\u00a0 And the assistant director who was directing that scene, a pick up, turned to him and asked \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter\u201d.\u00a0 And the actor said, \u201cShe\u2019s here.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And everybody else turned and just stopped.\u00a0 It was so funny.\u00a0 It was eerie.\u00a0 And the young woman who plays my character, Zoe Saldana, was off that day.\u00a0 JJ had called her in like to do an important scene.\u00a0 So, she had gotten all dressed up and was coming in.\u00a0 In the afternoon.\u00a0 And here she comes and so forth.\u00a0 By this time, we were sitting in the director\u2019s chair and in order to get to the set you had to come past the director\u2019s chair.\u00a0 And there he [JJ] sat me with his assistant and himself and somebody else and he deliberately walked her [Saldana] there, so she was coming.\u00a0 And she saw him [JJ] and he said \u201cwell, get that information, get over here and let\u2019s get this done now.\u201d\u00a0 And she turned around and went straight to the set and saw me.<\/p>\n<p>It was like, \u201cOh No.\u201d\u00a0 She knew what he meant immediately.\u00a0\u00a0 And she absolutely lost it.\u00a0 We had the best time.\u00a0 We sat there for about an hour.\u00a0 And we had a wonderful time.\u00a0 I\u2019m really feeling I have a lot of respect for his [Abrams] work.\u00a0 This is a prequel.\u00a0 It ends where we go off for the first mission.\u00a0 Where we started.\u00a0 I just feel like \u201cthey done good by me by choosing her [Saldana].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DLE &#8211; You still look so good, you could have played you!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2858\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nichelle_nichols_lu-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"nichelle_nichols_lu\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nichelle_nichols_lu-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nichelle_nichols_lu.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/>NN &#8211; Almost!\u00a0\u00a0 He even talked about doing something with me in the film that he was not going to do with anyone else.\u00a0 But he did talk with and met with several of the cast members out of respect.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t really have anything in mind.\u00a0 But we\u2019re sitting at lunch talking and he was saying \u201cI have to get you in this movie.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m going, \u201cwell, you know, will that work?\u201d\u00a0 And we thought about it and thought about it, and then the strike hit. He called me a couple of times and then he called me and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to work.\u00a0 I can\u2019t make it work.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to do anything that looks like it\u2019s a fraud.\u201d\u00a0 I really appreciated that.\u00a0 And I said, \u201cJJ, this is your movie.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to put your signature on it.\u00a0 This is not Gene.\u00a0 As long as you respect Gene\u2019s brilliance.\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t do it any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DLE &#8211; I\u2019m dying to see this.\u00a0 I interviewed Chris Pine a few weeks ago.\u00a0 And Chris wasn\u2019t divulging anything.<\/p>\n<p>NN &#8211; Yep.\u00a0 Yep.<\/p>\n<p>DLE &#8211; He was like a little kid.\u00a0 Everyeone is on pins and needles for this.<\/p>\n<p>NN &#8211; Yes.\u00a0 Oh, yes.<\/p>\n<p>DLE: I\u2019m thrilled that you want to see it.<\/p>\n<p>NN &#8211; Oh yes.\u00a0 Because even if it has nothing to do with the original.\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s going to be quite different from the tv series.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be absolutely incredible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias I recently had a chance to talk with Nichelle Nichols, who originated the role of Lt.
