1\" width=\"400\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-1-300x126.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Being a fan of director Francesca Gregorini\u2019s freshman directorial effort with co-director Tatiana von Furstenberg, <em>Tanner Hall<\/em>, I was more than anxious to see what she could and would do on her own with THE TRUTH ABOUT EMANUEL.\u00a0 I am far from disappointed as not only does Gregorini, who also wrote the script,\u00a0 have a knack for casting, but her visual eye is stunning.\u00a0 A film built with strong, confident and lyrical visuals, Gregorini delivers a psychological study framed within a coming of age story that walks a tightrope of dark humor, drama and designed ambiguity that captivates.\u00a0 She is a gifted storyteller indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Emanuel is a 17 year old girl living with her father and his new, much younger, wife.\u00a0 Melodramatic in her own right, Emanuel has a pathos that stems from the death of her mother during childbirth, something that leads her to believe and continually avow \u201cI killed my mother.\u201d\u00a0 Living an at times zombie-like existence of numbness, Emanuel\u2019s interactions with others are few and far between, but when they are, sarcasm is the watchword of the day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2959\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-2.jpg\" alt=\"emanuel - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-2-300x126.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to placate her father and \u201cjoin society\u201d, as well as satisfying her own yearning curiosity to belong, Emanuel gets herself hired by her new neighbor, Linda, a single mother who bears more than a striking resemblance to Emanuel\u2019s mother.\u00a0 Quickly forgoing a deep bond, Linda is warm and maternal to Emanuel, strengthening their connection and Emanuel\u2019s desire to spend time with her.\u00a0 But something is amiss.\u00a0 Disturbing situations and events come to light.\u00a0 Hallucinations take hold for more than one person.\u00a0 And Emanuel must face her ultimate foe &#8211; herself.\u00a0 Is she living life, or a fantasy?<\/p>\n<p>Kaya Scodelario dazzles as she exquisitely maneuvers and manipulates Emanuel\u2019s emotional dance of surrealistic dream and sorrow.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She nails the deadpan sarcastic beats with as much perfection a she creates a numbed daze and ghostly specter of someone living but merely passing through life.\u00a0 Superb performance.\u00a0\u00a0 Equally impressive is Jessica Biel who, as Linda, delivers one of the most impressive performances in her career.\u00a0 Calculated, methodical, balanced on an emotional precipice, this is a genuine surprise and treat from Biel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2961\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-4.jpg\" alt=\"emanuel - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-4-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alfred Molina is solid and secure as Emanuel\u2019s father while two other supporting players often steal the thunder of scenes.\u00a0 Aneurin Barnard as Emanuel\u2019s boyfriend Claude, adds a stalkerish edge that fuels the ambiguity of the film as a whole while Jimmi Simpson is a delicious haunting delight as Arthur, making one continually think of James Spader both in look and performance.<\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by Gregorini, THE TRUTH ABOUT EMANUEL is spellbinding.\u00a0 Finding that perfect blend of surrealism and realism, Gregorini allows visuals and production design to speak volumes as together with cinematographer Polly Morgan creates a hyperstylized palette of beauty that celebrates literally and figuratively the essences and meanings of water, light and color.\u00a0 Framing is core to the production and is metaphorically telling.\u00a0 An underwater sequence is breathtakingly eerie and melodic.\u00a0 Tackling a multiplicity of themes, Gregorini is respectful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2960\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/emanuel-3.jpg\" alt=\"emanuel -
