\/>\n<strong>MAUREEN O&#8217;HARA TO RECEIVE ACADEMY&#8217;S<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>GOVERNORS AWARDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LOS ANGELES, CA \u2014 The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 26) to present Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carri\u00e8re, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O\u2019Hara, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte.\u00a0 All four awards will be presented at the Academy\u2019s 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood &amp; Highland Center\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime,\u201d said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carri\u00e8re, who began his career as a novelist, was introduced to screenwriting by French comedian and filmmaker Pierre \u00c9taix, with whom he shared an Oscar\u00ae for the live action short subject \u201cHeureux Anniversaire (Happy Anniversary)\u201d in 1962.\u00a0 He received two more nominations during his nearly two-decade collaboration with director Luis Bu\u00f1uel, for the screenplays for \u201cThe Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie\u201d and \u201cThat Obscure Object of Desire.\u201d\u00a0 Carri\u00e8re also has collaborated notably with such directors as Volker Schl\u00f6ndorff (\u201cThe Tin Drum\u201d), Jean-Luc Godard (\u201cEvery Man for Himself\u201d) and Andrzej Wajda (\u201cDanton\u201d). \u00a0He earned a fourth Oscar nomination for \u201cThe Unbearable Lightness of Being\u201d with director Philip Kaufman.<\/p>\n<p>Miyazaki is an artist, writer, director, producer and three-time Oscar nominee in the Animated Feature Film category, winning in 2002 for \u201cSpirited Away.\u201d\u00a0 His other nominations were for \u201cHowl\u2019s Moving Castle\u201d in 2005 and \u201cThe Wind Rises\u201d last year. \u00a0Miyazaki gained an enormous following in his native Japan for such features as \u201cNausica\u00e4 of the Valley of the Wind,\u201d \u201cLaputa: Castle in the Sky,\u201d \u201cMy Neighbor Totoro\u201d and \u201cKiki\u2019s Delivery Service\u201d before breaking out internationally in the late 1990s with \u201cPrincess Mononoke.\u201d\u00a0 He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a renowned animation studio based in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Hara, a native of Dublin, Ireland, came to Hollywood in 1939 to star opposite Charles Laughton in \u201cThe Hunchback of Notre Dame.\u201d \u00a0She went on to appear in a wide range of feature films, including the swashbucklers \u201cThe Black Swan\u201d and \u201cSinbad the Sailor,\u201d the dramas \u201cThis Land Is Mine\u201d and \u201cA Woman\u2019s Secret,\u201d the family classics \u201cMiracle on 34th Street\u201d and \u201cThe Parent Trap,\u201d the spy comedy \u201cOur Man in Havana\u201d and numerous Westerns. \u00a0She was a favorite of director John Ford, who cast her in five of his films, including \u201cHow Green Was My Valley,\u201d \u201cRio Grande\u201d and \u201cThe Quiet Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An actor, producer, singer and lifelong activist, Belafonte began performing in theaters and nightclubs in and around Harlem, where he was born. \u00a0From the beginning of his film career, he chose projects that shed needed light on racism and inequality, including \u201cCarmen Jones,\u201d \u201cOdds against Tomorrow\u201d and \u201cThe World, the Flesh and the Devil.\u201d \u00a0He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, marching and organizing alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and often funding initiatives with his entertainment income. \u00a0Belafonte was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1987 and currently serves on the boards of the Advancement Project and the Institute for Policy Studies. \u00a0His work on behalf of children, education, famine relief, AIDS awareness and civil rights has taken him all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given \u201cto honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given \u201cto an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian
