{"id":3309,"date":"2013-09-10T12:09:07","date_gmt":"2013-09-10T19:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=3309"},"modified":"2014-10-16T12:15:13","modified_gmt":"2014-10-16T19:15:13","slug":"youre-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/youre-next\/","title":{"rendered":"YOU&#8217;RE NEXT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s gonna be tough to top the surprise elements and \u201ccool factor\u201d of YOU\u2019RE NEXT.\u00a0 Not only filled with killers who are grammatically correct, YOU\u2019RE NEXT is scary, jump out of your seat fun.\u00a0 For any horror afficionados, all one needs is to see the names Larry Fessenden, Ti West and Joe Swanberg as cast plus the genius of Adam Wingard at the helm and script by Simon Barrett, and you know you\u2019re in for something smartly conceived and executed.\u00a0 Then toss in a \u201ckiller\u201d action-packed performance by Aussie Sharni Vinson, a dark, historic mansion and animal-masked killers and what\u2019s not to love!\u00a0 Complete with murder, madness, mayhem and greed and YOU\u2019RE NEXT is simply \u201cFrighteningly Awesome\u201d!!<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3315\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-6.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - 6\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-6.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-6-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A family more dysfunctional than mine, the Davisons reunite for Mom and Dad\u2019s 25th anniversary at the million dollar family manse hidden away on a wooded multi-acre estate far from the maddening crowds.\u00a0 Dad has recently retired from an executive position with an high-powered and politically connected defense contractor, much to the distress of son Crispian\u2019s girlfriend Erin who is meeting the family for the first time.\u00a0 Joining in the festivities are son Drake and his prestige-hungry wife Kelly, spoiled youngest child Aimee and her filmmaker boyfriend Tariq, and the obvious black sheep of the family, Felix and his goth girl, Zee.\u00a0\u00a0 From the get-go it\u2019s clear that none of the siblings get along &#8211; at all.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take long before the family sits down for their first big familial dinner and blood starts spurting and bodies start dropping as unseen sounds, shadows and mystery cross-bow arrows start plaguing the family.\u00a0 Panic ensues in all but Erin who calls on her skills growing up as a survivalist in the Australian Outback to close ranks and try and save as many lives as possible.\u00a0 In the meantime, Crispian, the wimpiest of the group, bravely volunteers to run across the woods to a neighbor to call for help.\u00a0 And ever so slowly and deliberately, with each onslaught, the attackers become more visible showing their true selves, covered in animal masks.\u00a0 Foxes, lambs, wolves &#8211; all metaphoric covers for well worn cliches.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1486\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/youre-next-2.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/youre-next-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/youre-next-2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sharni Vinson gets my vote as the next horror protagonist.\u00a0 As Erin she is not only kick-ass, but delivers a more than convincing intelligence and survivalist attitude.\u00a0 And she\u2019s likeable &#8211; the ONLY likeable one in the bunch!\u00a0 For Vinson, the great appeal of YOU\u2019RE NEXT and the character was Erin\u2019s intelligence finding it \u201cnot so much the physicality of the role which I feel like unknowingly I trained for, for 30 years of my life in just the sports that I\u2019ve come through, but it was more the mentality of the character.\u00a0 She is smart and she has this, what I almost took as a sixth sense, so to speak.\u00a0 She\u2019s the first person to hear a glass break and notice it and react.\u00a0 And her reaction time is quick.\u00a0 I had to give her the respect that somebody coming from a survivalist upbringing would have in dealing with these situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A standout for Vinson is that \u201cthese characters that are just, gritty.\u00a0 Really gritty.\u00a0 I would step into hair and make-up.\u00a0 And you\u2019re used to stepping into a hair and make-up chair and walking out and you look in the mirror and go, \u2018Is my make-up perfect?\u2019\u00a0 You don\u2019t care with this.\u00a0 This is like, you sit in there and say, \u2018Mess me up as bad as you can.\u00a0 Make me look as really bloody and gory as whatever this character has been through is possible.\u2019\u00a0 And then I look in the mirror and see all the scratches!\u00a0 I\u2019ve never felt cooler!\u00a0 And more in line with the character with war wounds.\u00a0 You\u2019re not worried about, \u2018What do I look like right now?\u2019\u00a0 It\u2019s not about that.\u00a0 It\u2019s about how am I going to get this moment across and make it the most believable for the audience to then respond to it.\u00a0 The whole movie was coming from a different place so hopefully that comes across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3316\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-glenn-tucci.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - glenn &amp; tucci\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-glenn-tucci.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-glenn-tucci-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wendy Glenn and Nic Tucci add a nice layer of slick suspicion as Zee and Felix, respectively, something that proved an added bonus for Sharni Vinson given that Glenn is her best friend and roommate off-screen.\u00a0 Describing Glenn\u2019s performance of Zee as \u201cgeniusly played\u201d, Vinson is quick to note that \u201cShe\u2019s nothing like that role. [Wendy] is an English girl who\u2019s just super, super sweet. . .She\u2019s just such a good actress .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A familiar face to indie fans is writer\/director\/actor Joe Swanberg who is just a lot of fun as the pompous brother Drake.\u00a0 Making Drake unlikeable, then\u00a0 cocky, then\u00a0 arrogant, and then turn him into a martyred stumbler when Drake is shot with a crossbow and has an arrow sticking out of his back.\u00a0 Swanberg makes Drake the guy that you just want to slap upside the head and say, \u201cBuck up, Man!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Relishing the experience, Swanberg reflects, \u201cBelieve me, I\u2019m very proud and excited to have anything to do with YOU\u2019RE NEXT.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great role to play.\u00a0 When they sent me the script I was immediately very excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Crispian, AJ Bowen dives into the performance had first, making Crispian an annoying schmuck from the start.\u00a0 My radar was immediately up from the very beginning where this character is concerned with Bowen milking the role for all the uneasiness possible, making Crispian itchy and squirmy with every movement.<\/p>\n<p>The other girls in the cast really aren\u2019t good for much other than screaming and they do a great job of it.\u00a0 Director Wingard also makes them so unlikeable you don\u2019t care that they die.\u00a0 He sticks to the formula of killing off the unlikeable characters.\u00a0 However, I am personally disappointed though at the death of Ti West\u2019s Tariq who adds a great bit of tongue-in-cheek playing a filmmaker version of himself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3314\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-5.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Simon Barrett\u2019s script sets up many plot possibilities that intentionally divert the mind, e.g., as Crispian and Erin are driving to the house, he lets it slip out that his father just retired from a huge defense firm.\u00a0 Immediately, you think this is important as it\u2019s so non sequitur in the conversation.\u00a0 When bad things start happening, Erin is the first suspect that comes to mind.\u00a0 But as other family members start showing up, the familial plot thickens and although a \u201cgenre film\u201d, there is depth to the performances with establishing the familial fracture through facial expressions, vocal inflection and tone and body stances that beyond typical \u201cphone it in\u201d performance tropes.\u00a0 But through it all, the only character that you really develop a like and rah-rah attitude for is that of Erin &#8211; despite an initial scripting deflection.\u00a0 Holding out for the last possible moment for the story\u2019s big \u201creveal\u201d goes to the film\u2019s strength and then while the audience is believing there\u2019s some big plot at play for \u201cthe greater good\u201d perhaps, images appear that spin the mind 180 degrees into another direction with more twists that just ratchet up the fear factor and blood-letting.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Wingard amps up the suspense and the scares while amping up the body count.\u00a0 Free-flowing blood spews forth with as much venom as the hate-filled greedy siblings.\u00a0\u00a0 I am agog with Andrew Palermo\u2019s cinematography as well as Thomas Hammock\u2019s production design.\u00a0 With the production design, the house is steeped in an emotional coldness while still feeling dark and claustrophobic.\u00a0 Little details, like a Kelvinator refrigerator in the kitchen, the old crystal cut doorknobs but with painting that has painted over the locks and door jambs, belie the \u201cmonied\u201d family which allows for the possibility at film\u2019s end, a final \u201c**** you\u201d to the killers looking for money, i.e., dad really doesn\u2019t have any.\u00a0 Or does he?\u00a0 Nothing is ever as it seems with Wingard and Barrett as puppetmasters extraordinaire.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3313\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-3.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - 3\" width=\"353\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-3.jpg 353w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-3-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nice choice by Wingard to present the killers at first as unseen sounds and faint glimmers or shadowy reflections and as bodies drop, increase the intensity and recognition of the killers.\u00a0 What really kills is the sound design and scoring, especially in the first scenes with Fessenden where we get a bright light outside his home (at that moment we don\u2019t know the lights are on motion sensors) and a pulsating outer-space\/alien type score.\u00a0 Are aliens attacking?\u00a0 Is this the supernatural?\u00a0 Wingard throws you off balance as to who or what is about to appear.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting perspective on Wingard\u2019s direction of YOU\u2019RE NEXT comes from fellow director and one of the cast here, Joe Swanberg.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe experience of being on the set of YOU\u2019RE NEXT and watching Adam [Wingard] who I met when he was flat broke, who was probably flat broke the day they started shooting YOU\u201dRE NEXT, too [laughing] &#8211; this is a guy who slept on my couch for a month while we made three microbudget movies in a row. . .To get to Columbia, Missouri and see this guy commanding a ship of a crew of 30 and tons of effects and two cameras and all this stuff.\u00a0 It was inspiring.\u00a0 I\u2019m not often inspired by my close friends in that way. . .It was amazing to get there and really see Adam step up to that level and work his ass off and then to come into the editing room and just focus and get that cut ready for Toronto.\u00a0 I just saw a guy who is prone to being a sort of stoner-slacker kind of dude, I saw him really like a laser, just hone in on this movie and he made a great movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And having the killers wear animal masks??\u00a0 Brilliant!\u00a0 The first thing one thinks of with the sheep mask is \u201cWolf in sheep\u2019s clothing\u201d, with the fox, \u201cfox in the hen house\u201d, etc.\u00a0 Nice little touches that take YOU\u2019RE NEXT beyond a slasher film and give it levels of intelligent thought and construct.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3312\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-1.jpg\" alt=\"you're next - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/youre-next-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kills methods are wonderfully executed and varied.\u00a0 Machetes, crossbows, slit throats, piano wire (and check out that great piano pinging when Aimee runs into the piano wire!!).\u00a0 Perfectly delicious!\u00a0 And at the same time, we see basic survival weapons come into play &#8211; nails in boards, kitchen knives, meat cleavers, meat pounders, bricks, string.\u00a0\u00a0 Great balance of the calculated methodology versus think on your feet survival.<\/p>\n<p>An important aspect of YOU\u2019RE NEXT is the house in which the film is shot.\u00a0 A character itself, as Vinson noted, \u201cThe house was picked for the film because it is so visually appeasing for what we were after.\u00a0 It really was that creaky.\u00a0 It really was that scary just to see it.\u00a0 I think that one of the crazy things was that when we were shooting, especially the big crazy dinner table scene where we\u2019re utilizing 12 cast members and it\u2019s mayhem.\u201d\u00a0 But shooting in this \u201cvisually appeasing house\u201d presented its own challenges given that the house is an historic landmark in Missouri.\u00a0 In order to protect the construction, false walls had to be built and great care had to be given to floors, furnishings, lighting fixtures.\u00a0 Excitedly recalling the mayhem of the shoot, Vinson reflects, \u201cThe table even gets flipped on its head at one point.\u00a0 And we\u2019re not supposed to ruin the floors!\u00a0 How are we gonna do this?\u00a0 You\u2019ve got one chance, one take.\u00a0 Once this is down, we\u2019re not gonna re-set it.\u00a0 A lot of our shots in this movie were shot in the first and second take.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re seeing.\u00a0 It\u2019s very raw.\u00a0 We had to be very very mindful of the carpet.\u00a0 It just remember the \u2018Don\u2019t get blood on the carpet!\u00a0 Don\u2019t get blood on the carpet!\u2019\u00a0 And I\u2019m like, \u2018How are we not? There\u2019s a blood rig up my neck and my head\u2019s about to explode!\u2019\u00a0 In the original ending, I die, so there\u2019s this huge blood rig where my head exploded.\u00a0 So, how are we not gonna get blood on the carpet?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how much money they owed in the end in damages, but it was probably worth it! [laughing] It was!\u00a0 It was worth it. \u201c<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1487\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/youre-next-4.jpg\" alt=\"you're next -
