{"id":3612,"date":"2013-05-31T05:36:48","date_gmt":"2013-05-31T12:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=3612"},"modified":"2014-10-17T05:40:16","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:40:16","slug":"fill-the-void","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/fill-the-void\/","title":{"rendered":"FILL THE VOID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writer\/director Rama Burshtein takes us deep into the world of an Orthodox Hassidic family and community in Tel Aviv with FILL THE VOID.\u00a0 In Hebrew with English sub-titles, the film plays like a soap opera or Jewish telenovella in terms of engrossing entertainment (and inherent humor thanks to the cultural aspects of the film), completely investing one in the story and the characters, leaving you craving more.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3616\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-3.jpg\" alt=\"fill the void - 3\" width=\"370\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-3.jpg 370w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-3-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>18-year old peaches and cream Shira is in need of a husband.\u00a0 With marriages arranged by the families, we meet Shira and her mother Rivka at the local supermarket where they are doing more than shopping for groceries.\u00a0 They\u2019re shopping for a husband.\u00a0 After all, Shira wants to make certain he\u2019s at least good looking, while Rivka wants to make sure he\u2019s \u201cacceptable\u201d, especially given her place in the community being married to the rabbi.\u00a0 Finding the potential husband in the dairy aisle more than acceptable, bids are placed, plans are made for the young couple\u2019s betrothal.\u00a0 But tragedy strikes as Shira\u2019s elder sister Esther dies while giving birth to her first child.\u00a0 Making the situation more heartbreaking is that the death and birth happen during Purim, putting a damper on those festivities as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mourning Esther means putting her wedding on hold.\u00a0 It also presents another problem.\u00a0 Esther\u2019s husband Yochai is now alone with a newborn and in need of a wife; a matter more pressing than Shira\u2019s marriage.\u00a0 And there\u2019s also new grandmother Rivka who wants her grandson close to her, something that may not happen is Yochai\u2019s parents get their way and marry him off to a woman in Belgium.\u00a0 For Rivka, there\u2019s only one answer.\u00a0 Shira must marry her dead sister\u2019s husband, Yochai.\u00a0 With the community desiring and blessing the marriage (after much wrangling by Rivka), it all comes down to Shira.\u00a0 Will she or won\u2019t she?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3614\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-1.jpg\" alt=\"fill the void - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-1-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Newcomer Hadas Yaron shines as Shira.\u00a0 Fresh-faced and naive yet with a determined spirit, she makes Shira standout from underneath the less than flattering Hassidic clothing and mores.\u00a0\u00a0 Drawn to the project by \u201cthe beautiful script and beautiful story\u201d Yaron, although Jewish, was completely unfamiliar with the Hassidic culture.\u00a0 \u201cWe had the same holidays because we\u2019re all Jewish in Israel. [But] we celebrate it and do it completely different.\u00a0 We just have a meal with our family and then we go on with our things and our lives and they [the Orthodox] have something much more meaningful.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know anything.\u201d\u00a0 Making this film a fulfilling experience for her is that \u201cThere\u2019s something very unique about the fact that nothing [the script] was \u201cpushy\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so thorough.\u00a0 Even when you say something, it\u2019s not necessarily what you would mean. . . It\u2019s not only the words that say something in the film.\u00a0 It\u2019s much more than that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there are a lot of scripts like that.\u201d\u00a0 Young at the time of filming and only her second film, Yaron recalls that \u201ceven during rehearsals I didn\u2019t know how to act with someone in that the movie tells a love story. . . I remember there was also tension there because I was embarrassed a lot; also, the fact that we didn\u2019t rehearse a lot.\u00a0 Every time we did the scene until we got it, then\u00a0 Rama [would say] to \u201cleave it there\u201d so the tension would remain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3618\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-4.jpg\" alt=\"fill the void - 4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Irritating, meddling and spellbinding is Irit Sheleg who as Rivka exudes a diva-esque persona that while appropriately annoying with a \u201cstick your nose in everybody\u2019s business\u201d air, just begs to be seen more.\u00a0\u00a0 Her \u201cJewish mother\u201d stereotype gives way to comic relief and never moreso than in the opening grocery store scene.\u00a0 Yiftach Klein delivers a flawed, vice-filled, human portrayal of Yochai that resonates with the average person, be they Jewish or Gentile.\u00a0 As the not-getting-any-younger-still-single Frieda, Hila Feldman is a delight.\u00a0 You feel Frieda\u2019s suffering as with each community member that marries or hooks up, she gets the obligatory, \u201cMaybe you\u2019ll be next\u201d, not to mention appreciating the humor of some of the lengths she and her mother will go to try and snag her a husband especially when it comes to Klein\u2019s Yochai.\u00a0 Every daughter in the world will appreciate Frieda and Feldman\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by Rama Burshtein, \u201cit was very complicated\u201d to create FILL THE VOID, to hone in on and \u201cto make this relationship between men and women and that enigma.\u201d\u00a0 Filled with richly textured characters, it was also important was that the story be filled with passion.\u00a0 \u201cPassion is wanting something you don\u2019t have.\u00a0 I love that power of wanting and restraining.\u00a0 I feel that this is representative of secrets, the secret of everything.\u201d\u00a0 Thus, it required a delicate balancing act in designing the relationship between Yaron\u2019s Shira and Yiftak Klein\u2019s Yochai in order to maintain that restraint and that energy, that \u201calmost kiss\u201d. \u201cIf they would have like a love scene, it would die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3619\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-5.jpg\" alt=\"fill the void - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-5-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to her\u00a0 clean, unfettered lensing allowing the characters, traditional (albeit unflattering) costuming and religious traditions to come to the forefront.\u00a0 Herself part of the Hassidic community, she has an intimate understanding of the culture and the people which she allows to organically flow with unforced naturalism, lending to a beautiful\u00a0 poetic lyricism.\u00a0 Spurring Burshtein forward was the fact that \u201cMy community &#8211; the overlooked people &#8211; they don\u2019t have a cultured voice.\u00a0 You don\u2019t even see it in books or anything with the arts.\u00a0 I thought that it\u2019s time to have a little voice and to just say something from within.\u201d\u00a0 Admitting that she \u201cwas not always religious\u201d FILL THE VOID stems from a real life experience.\u00a0 \u201c One of the first things I saw before I joined in the clan, a good friend of mine was about to marry her son in the evening.\u00a0 And her mom died that morning.\u00a0 We went to the funeral with her.\u00a0 She buried her in the afternoon and then she married her son at night.\u00a0 It fascinated me how you can handle two opposites.\u00a0 I think this is the power of Judaism.\u00a0 That\u2019s one law, to bury the mother.\u00a0 And there\u2019s another law, to marry a son. . .\u00a0 This is life.\u00a0 No one\u2019s a villain.\u00a0 No one\u2019s bad.\u00a0 Everyone\u2019s human and human means that they [are] all coming together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Important to Burshtein is the authenticity of emotion.\u00a0 \u201cI get a lot of the people from the Orthodox community telling me how accurate this is.\u00a0 But then again, it\u2019s a story of a certain family and is typical of anything.\u00a0 It\u2019s life. . . Being Orthodox means being very individual, being very private and having your own private way of doing the spiritual work.\u00a0 It\u2019s accurate with the way it looks and the way people talk but again, it\u2019s very very personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Notable is that the visuals present a very cloistered, very claustrophobic community, much of which is conveyed through camera movements, through the intimacy of one-shots or very close two-shots bordering on a one-shot.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Achieving this emotional cloistering was a close knit partnership between Burshtein and her cinematographer, Asaf Sudri, who is described by Burshtein as a \u201cbrilliant, brilliant man\u201d.\u00a0 Together they approached the story with a few things in mind.\u00a0 \u201cOne, I knew that the real location of the film is [Shira\u2019s] heart and the journey is about trying to figure out what she feels.\u00a0 So, I went with the doors and the rooms and the house.\u00a0 Then the other thing was that we see fractures of a picture.\u00a0 It\u2019s like Old Guards. . . so I went with that, too.\u00a0 That was very important.\u00a0 And then, this is a very low budget film and I knew what I had was a frame and a character. . .I have the script and I have a character and a frame. . .the lighting and the frame.\u201d\u00a0 To Burshtein, \u201cthe heart, it\u2019s very colorful, very small but then it\u2019s on a widescreen.\u201d\u00a0 With that in mind, she and Sudri worked on framing.\u00a0 \u201cThere is room, even though it\u2019s very claustrophobic, you see air and on the sides.\u00a0 So it was very important that we shoot that on a widescreen.\u201d\u00a0 Confident, simple framing concentrating on the intimacy of a one-shot or two-shot scene, fill the screen with realism, buttressed by the authentic production design and costuming allowing for the almost poetic emotion to come to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3620\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/fill-the-void-6.jpg\" alt=\"fill the void -
