Actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang announced the 97th Oscars\u00ae nominations today (January 23), live from the Academy\u2019s Samuel Goldwyn Theater via a global live stream on Oscar.com, Oscars.org and the Academy\u2019s digital platforms, Disney+, Hulu, an international satellite feed and broadcast media.<\/p>\n
Sennott and Yang announced the nominees in two groups starting at 5:30 a.m. PT, followed by the remaining categories at 5:41 a.m. PT.<\/p>\n
Leading the nominations is “Emilia Perez” with 13 while “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each picked up 10 nominations. “Conclave” and “A Complete Unknown” each received 8 nominations.\u00a0 Surprising is that despite “Wicked” receiving 10 nominations and “Conclave” 8 including Best Motion Picture for each, directors John Chu and Edward Berger, respectively, were not nominated for Best Director.<\/p>\n
From an acting standpoint, a real surprise was Sebastian Stan’s nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as a young Donald J. Trump in “The Apprentice”, a film from which many distributors distanced themselves.\u00a0 At the same time, Daniel Craig was overlooked for “Queer” as was the ever-popular Denzel Washington for his acclaimed performance in “Gladiator II”.\u00a0 Also noticeably absent from the nominees was Angelina Jolie for “Maria”, Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl”, and both Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis for “The Last Showgirl”. Joyously, we saw Isabella Rossellini pick up her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Conclave”.\u00a0 Rossellini’s nomination comes 80 years after her mother Ingrid Bergman’s first nomination and Best Actress win for “Gaslight”.<\/p>\n
