Grieving over the recent loss of her mother, and inheriting her mother’s shop, Barbara is known as the “mobile seamstress” driving her robin’s egg blue VW with an oversized trunk-sized spool of lemon yellow thread adorning the vehicle, capturing the attention of all who see it pass by. However, with only two clients, Oskar, for whom she is making a “talking quilt” which was the specialty of her mother, and Grace Vessler, an obsessive, compulsive, and demanding woman who commands Barbara to drive to her home high in the mountains to sew one button on her wedding dress, Barbara’s life is rather dull.

Clinging to her mother’s memory and not really accepting her death, Barbara has unspooled thread throughout her house, creating a connective web suspended from the ceilings with tapestried talking photographs of Barbara and her mother interspersed in key areas such as in the kitchen where they used to cook together and in the bedroom where Barbara’s mother always told her goodnight. As Barbara goes about her day, she pulls on the tapestried photos and hears recordings of her mother.

On her way home from Grace’s and an incident involving the wedding dress button, Barbara stumbles upon an accident on the long and winding road, involving a motorcycle and a vehicle. There are two men who are injured. Slowly rolling past the scene, she gets a good look at both men, who appear to have been struggling for a briefcase, which is now askew on the roadway. Money? Drugs? The briefcase is locked. For whatever reason, Barbara decides to take the briefcase and in her mind pull of the perfect crime, but to do that, she must completely immobilize both of the men. But how? With thread, of course. Barbara keeps many spools of Mettler thread with her at all times. (For those who aren’t seamstresses or sewers, Mettler is an extremely durable thread.) You’d be surprised by the tensile strength of thread, especially with knotting and designing a kind of pulley system like she has in her house, and which she’s now executing on the roadway.

Calling on her skills and intellect, Barbara makes easy work of these two criminals and gets home safe and sound, all the while knowing if either gets free they will come looking for her and the briefcase, which sets the stage for more “choices” Barbara must make.

Chapterized with each “chapter” representing another choice that Barbara could make or should have made gives way to delicious quirky mayhem. Oskar and Grace, along with the men in the accident, Joshua and Beck, show up in all three chapters and scenarios with each chapter providing backstory that impacts Barbara’s other choices or options that we see unfold. The town sheriff, Ms. Engel, pops up in two chapters as she tries to handle the crime scene and officiate Grace’s wedding. And then there’s the drug dealer Hudson Armitage with wildly different motives in each chapter, especially since he is the father of young Joshua Armitage, the young man on the motorcycle in the accident that gave way to all of this.

Beautifully structured so that each chapter could stand alone as a short film, the idea for SEW TORN originated from a short film that Freddie Macdonald initially created as his application to film school. Co-writing the short and this subsequent feature with his father, Fred Macdonald, considerable time (and 22 drafts of the script) was obviously spent developing the story, focusing on the themes of choice and transformation. Ultimately, this created a narrative that uses sewing and thread as powerful metaphorical and visual storytelling devices. The unique approach stemmed from exploring the protagonist Barbara’s limited choices after encountering a crime scene and utilizing the precision and strength of sewing as a narrative and visual metaphor.

Focusing on the core themes of the original short film, specifically a moment of choice that Barbara makes, the Macdonalds hone in on three potential choices (call the police, drive away, or commit the perfect crime), to develop a three-story non-linear structure that subverts narrative expectations for this seemingly simple premise of a heist or drug deal gone wrong.

Starting with a protagonist who appears mousy, insecure, and grieving, SEW TORN gradually reveals Barbara’s capacity for strategic thinking and bold action. By exploring each potential path, the film challenges audience assumptions about what such a character might do. The visual storytelling, with its precise use of thread, color, and extreme close-ups, further reinforces this subversion by presenting a meticulously controlled narrative that constantly shifts expectations, delivering never-ending surprises that delight and engage.

Utilizing thread as the connective tissue for the story and each chapter, from the use of threads in the shop that tie Barbara to her family and most particularly her mother, and how Barbara has strung the threads in a cross-connecting maze in her bedroom and elsewhere in the house, to Barbara’s use of thread in her “choices”, metaphor is fantastic. Oh, the ties that bind! Notably, and unless you are a seamstress or sewer, it will probably go unnoticed, but using the wonderful German thread Mettler speaks volumes as it is a strong, but also lustrous, thread for sewing and machine embroidery work. As we see unfold, a strong thread creates unbreakable bonds in so many instances.

With the very first frame, we are struck by the color palette and Sebastian Klinger’s cinematography. Just gorgeous. There is a vibrancy and saturation that speaks loudly on film as color would do for a seamstress in a garment. Shooting the film in a documentary-style approach, scenes or situations often start with extreme close-ups of objects like needles, thread, and chains, and build outwards. ECUs are critical to the visual storytelling in conveying the film’s narrative and themes and are essential to the compelling visual language that connects to the film’s core metaphors of threading, connection, and choice. The originality of Barbara’s choices gives way to visual fun with the execution of each chapter beautifully done, not only with performance, but with the lighting and lensing. Framing is pristine and sharp. I am in love with Sebastian Klinger’s visual grammar and the camera movement. It tells a story.

The location is everything, and the Swiss Alps are spectacular for this story as not only does it afford that wonderful metaphoric twisting roadway, but it also provides a contrast for the claustrophobia, introversion, and closed-offness that Barbara feels. And the Alps look spectacular and majestic.

Standout is the whimsy, fun, and absurdity of the story itself as Barbara imagines her “choices” and how each plays out. Transitions from choice to choice are so entertaining as we see the visual transitions in the form of the sewing machine embroidering the next scene or act. And again, color is strong and sticks with the dark denim background. Interesting is that the only color threads used throughout the film (but for the white for the wedding dress button) is the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.

With that in mind, this is where Viviane Rapp’s production design stands out, with, for example, wallpaper in Sheriff Engel’s office which has a yellow background and green print, and as we know from our elementary school art classes, blue and yellow make green. Robin’s Egg Blue is Barbara’s signature color as it carries through from the shop to the bedroom to the car, the latter of which is punctuated with a sunny yellow as if an egg yolk, with her blue car metaphorically representing her mother, and Barbara as the little yellow yolk protected by her mother’s shell. So so much wonderful metaphor in this film.

Also edited by Freddy Macdonald, the pacing is perfection, but it’s the cutting back and forth between Barbara’s choices that is brilliantly done, keeping us on our toes and engaged. Interstitials of drone shots of the car winding up and down the twisty mountain road speak volumes. Some fantastic ECUs stand out and are really celebrated thanks to Macdonald’s rapier editing.

Performances are first-rate, starting with Eve Connolly as Barbara. She delivers an amazing blend of introversion, fear, and grief, and ingenuity that comes from her internal thoughts. Having a voice over from Barbara is key to the success of the storytelling, and this off-kilter structure, as Barbara has very little dialogue. But thanks to Connolly’s facial expressiveness and Klinger’s excellent visuals and ECUs, we see the wheels turning in her head.

Veteran actor K Callan is a hoot and a holler as Sheriff Engel. Her comedic timing is impeccable. Caroline Goodall is a scream as Grace Vessler. You can’t help but laugh out loud each time she is on screen, bitching about that button and her wedding dress. The wedding scene itself, with an undone safety pin and her dress getting bloody, with Grace almost doing gymnastics to repin the pin, is to die for.

Thoroughly enjoyable is Calum Worthy as poor Joshua Armitage. And he has solid chemistry with Connolly. John Lynch as Joshua’s dad Hudson, is a perfect foil to everyone.

Jacob Tardien’s score is just the icing on the cake. Not only are there musical touches of whimsy in the score itself and the lightness of the instrumentation that captures the tone of the film and the characters, but Tardien incorporated the sounds of a sewing machine (notably, Bernina), as did sound designer and editor Alexander Stratigenas.

Freddy Macdonald won the Student Academy Award for the short film SEW TORN, but this feature completely belies this as being his first feature film. On every level, Macdonald has delivered brilliant production elements, sewing everything together with nice, even stitches for a picture-perfect film. Original, quirky, colorful, engaging, and entertaining, he has crafted a rich, wonderful tapestry of originality and fun.

Directed by Freddy Macdonald
Written by Freddy Macdonald and
