Racing against time, Jake and Argos must dismantle Totec\u2019s sinister scheme, leveraging every clue to reveal the truth and secure justice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Directed by John Stalberg Jr., with script by Jacob Michael King, MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES stars Aaron Eckhart, Tanya van Graan, Karl Thaning, and Nicole Fortuin.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p>For director John Stalberg Jr., MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES isn\u2019t simply a sequel\u2014it\u2019s a descent.<\/p>\n<p>While the first <em>Muzzle<\/em> established Jake Rosser as a damaged former K-9 officer struggling to survive his past, MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES pushes that struggle inward and outward at once, transforming the story into what Stalberg describes as a modern odyssey\u2014one that operates simultaneously on a brutal action level and a psychological, even metaphysical plane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sequel was always about going deeper,\u201d Stalberg explains. \u201cNot just bigger action, but a deeper psychological and spiritual journey for Jake.\u201d A thinking man\u2019s action movie.<\/p>\n<p>Stalberg conceived CITY OF WOLVES as an urban echo of <em>The Odyssey<\/em>: a violent journey through a hostile landscape where every external obstacle reflects an internal battle. Cartels, corrupt cops, bureaucracy, and the film\u2019s central antagonist Totec are not just plot mechanics\u2014they are manifestations of Jake\u2019s PTSD, rage, addiction, and fear of failing his family.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cEverything Jake is fighting on the outside is something he\u2019s wrestling with on the inside,\u201d Stalberg says. \u201cIt\u2019s all personified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the core of that contradiction is Jake himself\u2014simultaneously a loving husband and father, and a government-trained weapon struggling to control his capacity for violence. That duality is mirrored throughout the film, nowhere more powerfully than in Jake\u2019s bond with his new K-9 partner, Argos.\u00a0 Together, they are forced to battle the malevolent forces of Totec.\u00a0\u00a0Rather than grounding the mysterious Totec as a conventional cartel enforcer, Stalberg leaned into something more unsettling.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cTotec was never meant to be just a guy with a gun,\u201d he says. \u201cWe built him as a metaphysical presence\u2014almost a devil figure.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Totec often exists as a disembodied voice, speaking through phones and earpieces, omniscient in a way that defies logistics. For Stalberg, that was the point.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhen people ask, \u2018How could he possibly know all this?\u2019 my answer is: that\u2019s the point. In our world, the devil always knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Totec represents the path Jake refuses to take\u2014the man who has made peace with violence and surrendered to it completely.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cTotec is the flip side of Jake,\u201d Stalberg explains. \u201cHe\u2019s the guy who accepted the devil\u2019s terms. Jake is trying to stay sober, be a husband and a father, and control his violence. Totec is what happens when you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sound design plays a crucial role here, making Totec\u2019s presence feel invasive and internal.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe wanted him to feel like the voice in Jake\u2019s head,\u201d Stalberg says. \u201cSomething that crawls under your skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As John discusses, visually, CITY OF WOLVES marks a deliberate evolution from the first film and required a re-engineering of the visual language we saw in <em>Muzzle<\/em>. Stalberg and cinematographer Pieter Vermeer consciously re-engineered the franchise\u2019s look, treating the sequel as an opportunity to bend tone and style the way long-running franchises like<em> Mission: Impossible<\/em> have done.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cA lot of what you\u2019re responding to came from Pieter and I very consciously re-engineering the visual language from the first film,\u201d Stalberg says.\u00a0\u00a0Where <em>Muzzle<\/em> leaned into spherical lenses and reportage-style realism, CITY OF WOLVES embraces anamorphic widescreen and operatic subjectivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went anamorphic, 2.39:1,\u201d Stalberg explains. \u201cWide, shallow depth close-ups that still feel epic. Strong horizontal compression, flare, and a very subjective frame that stays close to Jake psychologically.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The camera is rarely passive. Long anamorphic lenses are pushed uncomfortably close to Aaron Eckhart, capturing moments of suicidal ideation, moral paralysis, and raw fear.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThere were times we wondered if we were too close,\u201d Stalberg admits. \u201cBut the combination of Aaron\u2019s performance and the anamorphic texture made those moments brutally effective.\u201d Steadicam movement becomes an emotional barometer, never decorative.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe designed moves that were emotionally motivated,\u201d he says. \u201cThe camera rides Jake\u2019s internal volatility instead of observing from a safe distance.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Color reinforces that psychology. Present-tense sequences are denser, grittier, and higher contrast, while memories of Jake\u2019s wife Mia are lighter and cleaner\u2014subconscious reminders of what he\u2019s fighting to reclaim.<\/p>\n<p>With multiple narrative threads in play\u2014Jake\u2019s odyssey, Argos\u2019s parallel journey, Totec\u2019s omnipresent menace, and the emotional through-line with Mia\u2014the edit became a critical storytelling tool.\u00a0\u00a0Editor Bella Erikson worked closely with Stalberg to balance clarity with psychological momentum.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cEvery cut had to progress both plot and psychology,\u201d Stalberg says. \u201cNot just check in on subplots.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0One of the film\u2019s most striking motifs\u2014Jake and Argos as mirrored selves\u2014was built in the edit.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cArgos running a corridor, smash cut to Jake running a corridor,\u201d Stalberg explains. \u201cThat had to feel intuitive, not clever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Performance always took precedence over technical perfection.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWe were willing to break continuity, line rules, anything,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was always perfect geography versus perfect emotion\u2014and we chose emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That philosophy extends to tone. The film is brutal and violent, but punctuated by gallows humor\u2014moments like the OnStar call or calls to an insurance adjuster release pressure without deflating stakes.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhere you drop the joke, how long you hold a reaction\u2014those milliseconds matter,\u201d Stalberg notes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, John had to discuss Argos.\u00a0 The emotional heartbeat of MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES is not a man\u2014it\u2019s a dog.\u00a0 \u201cArgos really is the co-lead here,\u201d Stalberg says without hesitation.\u00a0\u00a0Argos is played by two Belgian Malinois brothers, each bringing a distinct aspect of the character to life.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cUzo is the older one,\u201d Stalberg explains. \u201cA former bomb-sniffing dog from Afghanistan. He became the face of Argos\u2014the close-ups, the emotional beats. He has this incredibly soulful, present energy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Malawi, the younger brother, handled the physical demands.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s the muscle,\u201d Stalberg says. \u201cRunning on the beach, jumping walls, going through cars\u2014he\u2019s the stunt double.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Together, they embody the same contradiction that defines Jake: affectionate and loyal, yet dangerous and highly trained.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re true working dogs,\u201d Stalberg adds. \u201cThey\u2019d run horses on farms for hours in the morning, then work all day on set. Very affectionate\u2014and genuinely dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the beginning, we thought of Argos as a reflection of Jake,\u201d Stalberg says. \u201cThey\u2019re both these trained \u2018animals\u2019 trying to live in a domestic world.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0When Argos hesitates to attack, it mirrors Jake\u2019s struggle to restrain his own violence.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cJake can\u2019t fully open up to his wife,\u201d Stalberg explains, \u201cbut he can talk to his dog in the car. Argos becomes his conscience. You\u2019re watching a man argue with the animal inside himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stalberg hopes MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES is not the end of Jake Rosser\u2019s journey.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s absolutely room for a third film,\u201d he says. \u201cEven more intense action, but also more character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given the operatic ambition and emotional commitment on display here, it\u2019s hard not to believe him.\u00a0\u00a0MUZZLE: CITY OF WOLVES is a visceral, violent film\u2014but it\u2019s also a deeply human one.
