As Lena, she quietly becomes the film\u2019s beating heart\u2014its conscience, its courage, and, by the end, its embodiment of freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Florentine himself wanted \u201creal people rather than poster faces,\u201d and he singled her out for bringing what he called a \u201cfully lived in character\u201d to the screen. For Thompson, that meant finding the humanity underneath the genre fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did play with this angel idea,\u201d she says of Lena, a Vietnam-era war widow, \u201cand I felt that when I was working with her and building the character, that she is this guiding light within the town. You know, [Stephen Lang\u2019s character] is the one who comes in and brings the external wings, encapsulates us, and we need that, we need that masculine figure. But what is so great about Lena and exploring her as a character, she does carry this grounded heart, connected to the roots of the town\u2026that gives her courage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The setting is 1988 in a small border town under cartel pressure.\u00a0 Lena runs the bar, cares for her disabled veteran father, keeps her head down, and survives. That alone could have made her just another background player in an action film. Thompson saw more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40944 size-shareaholic-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11-640x366.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11-640x366.png 640w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11-400x229.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11-1024x586.png 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11-768x439.png 768w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf11.png 1156w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just a shoot \u2019em up,\u201d she insists. \u201cThat\u2019s why I liked the story so much, and why I liked the character. The community factor\u2026I really felt resonated\u2014[the] importance of coming together as a community, and the real people are the ones who are really our heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she speaks of Lena, Scottie talks about her in almost poetic, physical terms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really\u2026fascinated by butterflies in the journey,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was really fun to play with building that arc from being sort of in that cocoon space that\u2019s not, unfortunately, in this case, a particularly safe cocoon, but that feeling contained and you can\u2019t move.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0That idea shaped how she carried herself in the early part of the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to be more, not so big in her movements,\u201d she explains. \u201cAgain, that\u2019s Ross [Clarkson, DP] and Isaac capturing just eye movements and subtle gestures, as opposed to, like, the bigness of things. So that when I get to the freedom at the end, it feels earned and expansive, and that it\u2019s shown on screen as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final images of Lena, walking away into wide open spaces under clear blue skies, hit Thompson as strongly as they do the audience.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt was really a beautiful understanding on everyone\u2019s part in regards to that arc,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s so nice when that work that you do on a character internally gets to be translated visually. Because, again, that does not always happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the subtler but significant choices in HELLFIRE is what Lena isn\u2019t: she\u2019s not the grizzled drifter\u2019s love interest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40953 size-shareaholic-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf3-640x480.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf3-640x480.png 640w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf3-400x300.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf3-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf3.png 799w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was actually, I think, originally going to be a much younger character,\u201d Thompson reveals, \u201cand there was going to be a love interest to it. But I think it\u2019s so special that it\u2019s not. And that the film still works.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0She cherishes the platonic yet intimate dynamic that developed between Lena and Stephen Lang\u2019s character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved the dynamic between her and \u2018Slang\u2019 because of the fatherly figure,\u201d she says. \u201cThere is a protector figure. And\u2026that the film still works [without romance]. I think it\u2019s a cool story to be putting out there in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a genre that often defaults to pairing a much older male lead with a younger woman romantically, Thompson recognized how refreshing it was to be allowed to exist as her own person, with her own arc, without being defined by a love story.<\/p>\n<p>Working opposite Stephen Lang was, at first, daunting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was intimidated by him,\u201d Thompson admits with a laugh. \u201cBecause he\u2019s Stephen Lang, and then I have this difficult language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40947 size-shareaholic-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf8-640x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf8-640x339.jpg 640w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf8-400x212.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf8-768x407.jpg 768w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf8.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>His discipline quickly turned that intimidation into inspiration.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHis discipline is an inspiration,\u201d she says. \u201cYou know, he\u2019s, I don\u2019t know, he\u2019s like 70 when we were shooting this, and his daily routine and physical practices were no messing around.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0One early bar scene, soon after his character arrives in town, became a key moment for both actors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had advocated for changing [the dialogue] around,\u201d Thompson recalls. The script by Richard Lowry features moments of heightened language, and Thompson, committed to truth, worried about making those lines feel grounded. \u201cSometimes that\u2019s the fear with heightened language,\u201d she says, \u201cthat you aren\u2019t as grounded in your truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Then Lang offered a different approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was actually Slang who was like, \u2018Well, why don\u2019t we just try it like it is,\u2019\u201d she says. Because she already trusted both Lang and Florentine, she agreed to take the risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt you could\u2026you know, those scenes when you can feel it when you\u2019re doing it?\u201d she remembers. \u201cIt was one of those moments where I know, \u2018Oh, we are in this, and we\u2019re present.\u2019 And I felt like, if I fall, Isaac will nudge me in the right direction, and also, if I flip there\u2019s Slang to catch me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The resulting scene showcases exactly what Thompson and Florentine both value: truth humming underneath stylized words.<\/p>\n<p>HELLFIRE also lets Thompson stretch physically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was younger, I was a dancer,\u201d she says. Years of dance training gave her an instinctive understanding of how to use her body in space\u2014an instinct she brings into Lena\u2019s reluctant evolution as an action participant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I liked about this character, for me,\u201d she explains, \u201cwas that I got to do some of the action, but I\u2019m not like, I\u2019m the action hero. I\u2019m sort of being pushed into it and getting to discover those legs, if you will, in the journey of Lena.\u00a0 Like, oh, stuff is happening, shit\u2019s going down, we are in this hellfire, and I actually have these abilities, and I can keep up with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she is careful about how she frames Lena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not rolling in like Uma Thurman in <em>Kill Bill<\/em>,\u201d she laughs. \u201cI\u2019m not\u2026an assassin. I\u2019m getting to do the action without being the centralized action figure\u2026It was really fun to do that dance in the way in which I got to do it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0What made it even more satisfying was the chance to do the physical work herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so stoked to be able to do that,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was so fun to be able to do my own action stuff\u2026And I loved watching the team. That stunt team was so skilled. They\u2019re so incredible. They were basically making two movies at once. It was wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40943 size-shareaholic-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12-640x319.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12-640x319.png 640w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12-400x199.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12-1024x510.png 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12-768x383.png 768w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf12.png 1326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On screen, the camera doesn\u2019t hide her; as a viewer, you can see it\u2019s Thompson in the thick of the sequences, not a double. That was important to her.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of it all is director Isaac Florentine, whose reputation in action circles preceded him. Thompson came away calling him \u201csuch a good director\u201d and \u201ccertainly one of the best directors I\u2019ve had a chance to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I loved in working with him,\u201d she says, \u201cis that he\u2026encouraged the humanness above all else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Florentine was flexible when needed\u2014especially around language.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIf I couldn\u2019t quite wrap my brain around [a line], Isaac worked with me to keep it, keep the essence, and slightly change this if we needed to,\u201d Thompson explains. \u201cHe was open to that, which I appreciated\u2026because that\u2019s not always the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, scheduling delays before production allowed for deeper collaboration.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cBecause we got delayed a few days,\u201d she says, \u201cI got extra time to go through the script with him and really build [Lena] from a deeply rooted place with his support and guidance. I really trust him. I really felt held and supported by him, that he wouldn\u2019t let a false moment slip by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florentine\u2019s long-time collaborators\u2014DP Ross Clarkson and editor Paul Harb\u2014added to that sense of security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you know your team, and you know what they\u2019re capable of,\u201d Thompson says, \u201cand you can be like, \u2018All right, I\u2019m seeing this edit, and the editor knows what I\u2019m seeing, and the cinematographer and I speak the same language\u2019\u2026that trust piece\u2026I really felt held and supported by him.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0That trust extended to the film\u2019s bold use of silence.\u00a0 Florentine and Ross often let the camera linger on Thompson\u2019s face in tense scenes, allowing internal beats and wordless reactions to do as much storytelling as any fight or gunshot.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s such a gift to be able to\u2026stay connected to that human that\u2019s on and off screen,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a really rare occurrence, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I remember when <em>Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> first came out,\u201d she says. \u201cElizabeth Moss is an amazing actress, hands down. I also think the way that show was shot, where it was very much allowing for so many moments with her internally that you didn\u2019t see on the screen, elevates anybody\u2019s performance.\u201d\u00a0 Scottie notes the danger of that where &#8220;you can take it too far and it becomes masturbatory\u201d, but insists that when it\u2019s done right, it \u201cbuilds character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me as the actor,\u201d she says, \u201cI\u2019ve certainly been on films where I\u2019ve built whole stories, but they\u2019re not catching any of the looks. They\u2019re just jumping to the next thing, especially in an action film. I knew on set working with [Isaac], \u2018Oh, I\u2019m in such good hands,\u2019 because he really understands that, and he is giving me a chance to let those moments breathe, discover those looks in the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40948\" src=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf7.png 596w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/hf7-400x227.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In HELLFIRE, SCOTTIE THOMPSON gets to be many things at once: a saloon keeper in modern clothing, a reluctant fighter, a moral compass, and a butterfly finally breaking out of her cocoon.
