\u201cI want to give kudos to a couple people,\u201d Taylor said when discussing the film\u2019s striking visual approach. \u201cWe realized it was best to shoot in Europe as well as the United States, because where Herbert lives, the redwood trees are magnificent and have a completely different look than Auschwitz. They\u2019re a great contrast.\u201d<\/p>\n

That contrast\u2014between Northern California\u2019s towering redwoods and the stark landscapes of Nazi-occupied Europe\u2014forms the visual and emotional backbone of the film. Cinematographers Antonio Riestra and Alexandra \u201cSasha\u201d Czurko each brought distinct visual sensibilities to the project, shaping the contemporary and historical timelines differently.<\/p>\n

In the present-day sequences, Taylor and Riestra leaned into a more intimate style, occasionally using handheld camerawork to capture Herbert\u2019s vulnerability and anxiety as he begins to share the story he kept hidden for decades. \u201cWhen Herbert is first being interviewed and he\u2019s totally nervous, we went for more of a handheld feel there,\u201d Taylor explained. \u201cTo show his fear\u2014his nervousness about being interviewed.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the European sequences depicting Herbert\u2019s youth, the filmmaking approach shifted dramatically.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to show everything from the perspective of the childhood Herbert,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cI really don\u2019t like it when the camera racks focus or zooms to tell you what to look at.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Instead, the filmmakers chose extremely wide lenses and composed shots where young Herbert\u2019s face remains central while the world around him unfolds in devastating clarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it was important to remain on Herbert\u2019s face, but have everything in the background going on behind him\u2014whether it be joy, whether it be the Nazis, whether it be Terezin or Auschwitz\u2014completely clear and visible in the background.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0That decision required a remarkable amount of trust from the film\u2019s youngest performer. To achieve those intimate shots, Luke David Blumm often had the camera just inches from his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuke had to deal with the giant camera being inches from him for many of those shots,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cBut he was such a pro. It was not a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blumm\u2019s performance anchors the historical portions of the film with astonishing maturity and emotional clarity. His portrayal captures Herbert\u2019s innocence, fear, and resilience as the boy\u2019s childhood collides with unimaginable cruelty.<\/p>\n

Equally vital to the film\u2019s authenticity was the production\u2019s work in Europe. The filmmakers shot in the actual town of Terezin, and the Czech Republic\u2019s Stillking Studios\u2014moved by the fact that Heller himself was originally from Prague\u2014went to extraordinary lengths to support the production.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThey bent over backwards,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cThey built Auschwitz for us.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The scale of that effort is evident onscreen, where meticulous production design and costuming recreate the historical world with haunting precision.<\/p>\n

Yet for all the sweeping historical moments in THE OPTIMIST, the film ultimately rests on performances\u2014and Taylor assembled an extraordinary cast to bring Heller\u2019s story to life.<\/p>\n

Stephen Lang delivers one of the most transformative performances of his career as the older Herbert Heller. Known to many audiences for physically imposing roles in films like Avatar<\/em>, Lang disappears entirely into the role of the quiet, reflective survivor.\u00a0 Taylor explains his rationale for casting against type.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you cast someone who already feels like a Herbert type, people see the trailer and say, \u2018Oh, I know what that is,\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cBut Stephen\u2014because his film portrayals are often so macho\u2014you see a completely new person.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Lang\u2019s commitment was so complete that even those who knew him well were startled by the transformation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHerbert\u2019s family was stunned by his portrayal,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cI remember walking down a muddy path with him during filming and putting my hand under his arm to steady him because he was so in character. And then I felt this massive bicep under his costume. I thought, \u2018This guy doesn\u2019t need help walking down a muddy path.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Opposite Lang is Elsie Fisher, whose performance as Abbey\u2014a troubled teenager struggling with her own emotional wounds\u2014creates the film\u2019s central emotional bridge between past and present.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI saw her in Eighth Grade<\/em>,\u201d Taylor recalled. \u201cAt such a young age, she could convey such depth of emotion. It was an honor to work with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fisher and Lang develop a quietly powerful dynamic onscreen, their unlikely friendship becoming the catalyst that allows Herbert to finally share the story he has kept buried for more than sixty years.<\/p>\n

One of the film\u2019s most memorable scenes\u2014an emotional exchange between Herbert and Abbey during a torrential downpour\u2014was itself born from a filmmaking challenge.\u00a0\u00a0Taylor had written rain into the script. What the crew encountered was something far more extreme.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt was the worst rain we\u2019ve ever seen in Northern California,\u201d he said. \u201cA total monsoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The weather forced Taylor to improvise.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI said, get me an umbrella\u2014but it has to be clear so the light comes through.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The resulting scene, with the river rising and rain pouring down around the two characters, has become one of audiences\u2019 favorite moments.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s funny,\u201d Taylor reflected. \u201cYou make this big film with sweeping scenes in Europe, but one of the favorite scenes people mention is that moment by the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scene works not because of scale but because of the emotional truth at its center.\u00a0\u00a0It also highlights one of Taylor\u2019s greatest strengths as a storyteller: his understanding that the emotional core of history lies in the personal.<\/p>\n

Structurally, THE OPTIMIST moves between Herbert\u2019s childhood experiences during the Holocaust and his present-day conversations with Abbey. Taylor designed those transitions carefully, using thematic connections rather than visual clich\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she talks about bullying, we cut to Herbert being bullied,\u201d Taylor explained. \u201cWe let the subject of the moment create the transition.\u201d<\/p>\n

The editing process\u2014handled by Rick LeCompte in the U.S. and Elina Kaufman in the Czech Republic\u2014became a delicate balancing act between historical narrative and emotional continuity.\u00a0\u00a0Rather than relying on dissolves or dreamlike transitions, Taylor chose to keep the storytelling immediate.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s telling stories about another teenager close to her age,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cSo I tried to connect them through story, through action, through music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Music became a crucial connective tissue between timelines. Songs sometimes begin in contemporary scenes before carrying across decades into Herbert\u2019s memories.\u00a0\u00a0One particularly moving moment occurs when Abbey later visits Auschwitz and touches Herbert\u2019s initials carved into a wooden post.\u00a0\u00a0In reality, Herbert never carved his initials there\u2014but Taylor based the moment on something he observed during research visits.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we visited Terezin, many of the cells had initials scratched into the walls\u2014many at the height of a child,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cI knew this was something that happened.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0By incorporating that detail into the film, Taylor found a symbolic way to connect Herbert and Abbey across time.<\/p>\n

If the film\u2019s visuals and performances form its emotional spine, the score provides its heartbeat.<\/p>\n

Composer Rob Berger collaborated with acclaimed violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman\u2014who also happens to be Taylor\u2019s cousin\u2014to craft a score that captures both the fragility and heroism of Herbert\u2019s journey.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cJenny understood Herbert\u2019s story immediately,\u201d Taylor said. \u201cShe had seen many of the interviews and really understood the emotional challenge of it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0In one striking sequence, when Herbert is forced to wear the yellow star for the first time and flees through the streets, the violin tremolo becomes almost kinetic\u2014propelling the young boy forward.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Scheinman\u2019s music reflects careful historical awareness. In one scene, she initially used a traditional Jewish melody associated with weddings\u2014only to reconsider after consulting a rabbi, ultimately composing a new piece that carried deeper emotional resonance.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s closing credits offered a particularly moving moment during its Los Angeles premiere.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cJenny actually played the score live over the end credits,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n

For Taylor, the entire project ultimately became an experience that changed him as both a filmmaker and a person.<\/p>\n

Despite years of preparation, the emotional impact of visiting Holocaust sites firsthand proved overwhelming.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI had written what I thought was quite a good script,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut when I went to Auschwitz and Terezin\u2026 I became depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reality of the history forced him to confront the weight of what he was portraying.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have a really good plan,\u201d he said, \u201cbut when it\u2019s a giant historical event like the Holocaust, you have to find the truth of it\u2014or you\u2019re perpetuating a lie.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0That realization led Taylor to deepen several scenes in the film, including moments depicting the brutal realities of camp life.<\/p>\n

It also changed how he thinks about storytelling itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to listen to what the world is telling you,\u201d he said. \u201cListen to the echoes of millions of people beyond just the individual story you\u2019re telling.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0For Taylor, that became the film\u2019s guiding principle.\u00a0\u00a0And perhaps no moment captures Herbert Heller\u2019s spirit better than the memory Taylor shared about the survivor\u2019s final days.<\/p>\n

When Taylor asked whether sharing his story had brought Herbert relief after decades of silence, the elderly survivor answered yes\u2014before delivering one final joke.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cBut not like having gas.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Then he laughed and added, \u201cJust kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even at the end of his life, Herbert Heller was still trying to lift the spirits of those around him.<\/p>\n
