This is storytelling as controlled explosion\u2014precise, punishing, and impossibly entertaining &#8211; a propulsive, high-stakes thriller that unfolds like a shell game played in real time.<\/p>\n<p>And make no mistake: every move is deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think in both of these films (<em>Relay<\/em> and FUZE), the editing is getting more and more\u2026 slightly tenser,\u201d Mackenzie explains. \u201cWe\u2019re never kind of cutting in the obvious places\u2026 there\u2019s a jaggedness in the editing\u2026 it pushes you forward all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That forward momentum is no accident. Clocking in at a lean 91 minutes and packing over 300 scenes, FUZE wastes no time\u2014and no frame. The collaboration between Mackenzie and editor Matt Mayer proves once again to be a masterclass in controlled acceleration, compressing narrative space while amplifying tension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fast film. There\u2019s a heck of a lot going on\u2026 bang, bang, bang,\u201d Mackenzie says. \u201cAnd there\u2019s something really exciting about being able to do that and not lose sense of the film\u2014actually create more of a sense of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Art of the Shell Game<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At its core, FUZE is a sleight-of-hand thriller\u2014one that dares audiences to keep up as it shifts focus, perspective, and allegiance.<\/p>\n<p>Mackenzie credits the film\u2019s foundation to writer Ben Hopkins, but the concept itself had been simmering for over a decade, rooted in a very real and very recurring phenomenon: the discovery of unexploded World War II ordnance across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things happen all the time,\u201d Mackenzie notes. \u201cIn the ten-plus years I\u2019ve been developing this\u2026 I\u2019ve seen so many reports of places being evacuated. fascinating contradiction: everything is visible, yet nothing is fully revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Reuniting with cinematographer Giles Nuttgens, Mackenzie leans into an organic shooting style that favors immediacy over spectacle\u2014mid-shots, two-shots, and close-ups that keep audiences locked into the mechanics of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try and make it as organic as possible when we\u2019re shooting,\u201d he says. \u201cThings are not necessarily being highlighted, but you\u2019re kind of absorbing them in something that feels real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even the film\u2019s darker environments\u2014bank vaults, subterranean corridors\u2014eschew stylization in favor of practical illumination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really sort of flashlights and reflective flashlights and work lights that create that atmosphere,\u201d Mackenzie explains. \u201cGiles is really just great at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The result is a visual strategy that hides nothing\u2014except the audience in a constant state of forward motion.<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere is this more evident than in the police operations room, led by Gugu Mbatha-Raw\u2019s Chief Superintendent\u2014a performance that anchors the film\u2019s procedural spine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of almost the backbone of the film,\u201d Mackenzie says. \u201cWe actually had to shoot that first\u2026 so we were throwing her into the deep end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dynamic between Mbatha-Raw and Honor Swinton Byrne brings a grounded, investigative clarity to the chaos, while Alexander Arnold\u2019s perceptive young corporal quietly becomes one of the film\u2019s moral compasses\u2014always one step behind, but asking the right questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building a Criminal Ecosystem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the equation, FUZE thrives on the unpredictable chemistry of its criminal ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>Theo James\u2019 Karalis emerges as a roguish, physically dynamic presence, while Sam Worthington\u2019s enigmatic X exerts a more calculated authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam was like the head of the operation, and Theo was the brains,\u201d Mackenzie explains. \u201cThere was always a sense of \u2018I don\u2019t trust you, and I don\u2019t trust you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What began as minimally defined characters on the page evolved into a fully realized group dynamic during production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey find their own dynamics\u2026 they became\u2014knocking down walls, getting sweaty\u2026 they kind of connected as a group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" philosophy inspired by Terry Riley\u2019s In C\u2014building tension through repetition, rhythm, and incremental variation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the music was in C\u2026 120 beats a minute,\u201d Mackenzie reveals. \u201cSo [musicians] could just get on and play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The result is a score that doesn\u2019t dictate emotion\u2014it escalates it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
