Strap yourself in and hold on tight because RUNNER hits the ground running and never looks back, delivering a high-octane, rock-’em-sock-’em thrill ride fueled by crashing cars, flying fists, gunfire, martial arts, and a ticking clock, yet powered by something far more unexpected\u2014heart.<\/p>\n

A lot of heart.<\/p>\n

So much so that by the time director Scott Waugh brings this action-packed journey across Australia to its emotionally climactic finish, don’t be surprised if you’re reaching for the tissues. I certainly was.<\/p>\n

Working with a solid story by Miles Hubley and Tommy White that wastes no time on unnecessary exposition, Waugh gives us Hank, a taciturn former military man and recovering alcoholic who now makes his living as a \u201crunner,\u201d handling routine deliveries of packages, letters and, yes, even the occasional bird. Then there’s Ben Bishop, a smooth-talking medical courier and chatterbox who could probably carry on a conversation with himself if no one else were available. Played to perfection by Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, respectively, the two are brought together by circumstance and then bound together by an increasingly dangerous mission: deliver a donor liver to a critically ill little girl named Ellie before time runs out.<\/p>\n

And time is running out.<\/p>\n

RUNNER establishes that ticking clock early, incorporating the medical parameters of organ viability naturally into the story rather than stopping everything for a dump of explanatory dialogue. We know what has to happen. We know when it has to happen. And most importantly, thanks to an utterly endearing little girl lying in a hospital bed, we know who it has to happen for.<\/p>\n

From there, Waugh puts the pedal to the metal.<\/p>\n

Anyone familiar with Waugh’s work, particularly Need For Speed<\/em>, knows his facility with vehicular action, but RUNNER feels like the culmination of everything he’s learned about constructing and escalating physical mayhem. Car chases, crashes and intricate rollovers give way to gunplay, knife work, hand-to-hand combat, strangling, martial arts, and enough punches, kicks and assorted bodily abuse to leave everyone reaching for an ice pack by the time it’s over. Yet there’s an impressive lack of repetition to the action. Each encounter has its own rhythm, geography and personality, building naturally toward a terrific third-act showdown that lets Ritchson’s physical prowess loose while never losing sight of what everyone is fighting over.<\/p>\n

That last point is critical.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

No matter how large the action becomes, the liver\u2014and therefore Ellie\u2014remains the center of the movie. A case containing an organ could easily have become little more than RUNNER’s MacGuffin. Instead, it remains a constant visual reminder that every minute wasted, every detour taken, every crash, punch and gunshot has a human consequence waiting at the end of the road.<\/p>\n

And that human element is where RUNNER really finds its strength.<\/p>\n

Ritchson and Wilson are dynamite together.\u00a0 Long before film’s end, it becomes blatantly obvious that Ritchson and Wilson are the onscreen pairing we didn’t know we needed, but now crave to see more of.\u00a0 On paper, the pairing sounds almost absurdly mismatched. In practice, that’s precisely why it works. Ritchson’s size, physicality and taciturn reserve provide the perfect counterweight to Wilson’s warmth, affability and seemingly inexhaustible supply of words. Wilson can wring comedy from the mere act of continuing to talk while Ritchson can generate a laugh with little more than a look suggesting he is calculating how much prison time he might get for throwing this man out of a moving vehicle.<\/p>\n

Ritchson is particularly effective at letting Hank’s emotional armor crack incrementally. There are no giant neon signs announcing the change; it happens in glances, reactions and increasingly small gestures of trust.\u00a0 Wilson, meanwhile, reminds us just how good an actor he can be when his innate likability is given dramatic weight. Ben’s chatter isn’t simply there for comic relief. It is part charm, part survival mechanism, part armor, and Wilson gradually allows us to see beneath it without sacrificing the qualities that make Ben so immediately appealing.<\/p>\n

Early on, Ben acknowledges the obvious: he talks too much and Hank doesn’t talk enough. His solution is simple. He’ll dial it down, Hank can crank it up, and eventually they’ll meet somewhere in the middle.<\/p>\n

What initially plays as another amusing Ben-ism quietly becomes the blueprint for the entire relationship.<\/p>\n

As the miles disappear behind them and the danger intensifies, so does the emotional distance between these men. Ben talks a little less. Hank talks a little more. The irritation gives way to tolerance, tolerance to understanding, and understanding to genuine friendship. Each gradually supplies something missing in the other until somewhere along the road Hank and Ben cease to feel like two mismatched men forced onto the same mission.<\/p>\n

They become a team.\u00a0\u00a0And ultimately, something more.<\/p>\n

They become one hero.<\/p>\n

Then there is Rodrigo Santoro as Damian, a villain who could easily have been reduced to another well-dressed psychopath barking orders while henchmen do the dirty work.\u00a0\u00a0Thankfully, neither Santoro nor the film is interested in that.<\/p>\n

Damian is dangerous, ruthless and absolutely capable of terrible things, but Santoro finds vulnerability inside him. The more we learn, the less comfortable it becomes to view him as simply evil. Understanding someone’s motivation is not the same thing as excusing his actions, and RUNNER wisely leaves that distinction intact.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And then there’s Mommy.<\/p>\n

There may be guns, knives and assorted implements of bodily destruction throughout RUNNER, but nothing cuts Damian down to size quite as efficiently as one slap from his disappointed mother.\u00a0\u00a0WHAP!<\/p>\n

Suddenly this frightening, powerful man looks like a chastised little boy who has just discovered that disappointing Mom is infinitely worse than anything Hank might do to him.\u00a0\u00a0Santoro’s reaction is priceless, but the moment also serves a genuine dramatic purpose. For just a few seconds the villain disappears and the son emerges. It’s funny. It’s revealing. And it gives Santoro another layer to play.<\/p>\n

Helping Waugh marry all of this emotional material with the action is cinematographer Lorenzo Senatore, whose work here is outstanding.<\/p>\n

Senatore proves himself as comfortable amid vehicular chaos as he is studying the contours of a face. His lensing gives the action scope and spatial clarity without ever losing sight of the people inside it. Particularly effective is the evolving visual relationship between Hank and Ben. Early compositions emphasize their separation\u2014Hank behind the wheel, Ben relegated elsewhere, physical space reinforcing emotional distance. As the relationship develops, the camera moves increasingly closer, visually compressing that distance until the imagery begins reflecting the intimacy the performances have earned.<\/p>\n

It’s subtle filmmaking, and all the better for it.<\/p>\n

Senatore also resists the tired desaturated look that has become something of a default setting for contemporary action. Australia is allowed to have color. Cool blues pull from sky and water while rich greens give the landscape life, and those tones carry naturally into interiors rather than making every location feel as though someone has drained the blood out of it in post.<\/p>\n

Just as importantly, Australia feels large.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Roads stretch. Landscapes open. Destinations have distance. Nothing conveniently feels right around the corner. That’s essential in a film governed by a biological clock. When an organ has only so many viable hours outside the human body, geography itself becomes an antagonist.<\/p>\n

Editor Matt Villa keeps that clock ticking beautifully. RUNNER has tremendous forward momentum, but Villa doesn’t confuse speed with indiscriminate cutting. Action is given enough breathing room to establish geography, while the quieter Hank-and-Ben beats have time to register. Neither component feels as though it’s interrupting the other. Instead, action and character increasingly feed one another until the emotional stakes and physical stakes become inseparable.<\/p>\n

The music and needle drops add another layer of personality, shifting tone as the journey moves through different emotional chapters. Particularly inspired is the use of \u201cSpirit in the Sky\u201d at the outset, an infectious choice on first hearing whose resonance only grows as RUNNER moves toward its destination. It’s the kind of musical selection that makes you smile going in and means something very different looking back.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And then there is Ellie.<\/p>\n

For all the crashes, gunfire, villains and mayhem, Waugh never forgets the little girl waiting in that hospital bed.<\/p>\n

Her introduction is beautifully understated. Soft light filters through the room. Her mother tries to lift her spirits. And then Ellie says she’s tired.\u00a0\u00a0That’s all it takes.<\/p>\n

No manipulative monologue. No clumsy exposition demanding that we care. No swelling score instructing us how to feel. A sick little girl is tired, and suddenly everything riding in that case matters.<\/p>\n

That restraint becomes increasingly important because RUNNER eventually asks a great deal emotionally from its audience. The film earns the right to do so by planting its humanity early and then tending to it throughout the journey rather than suddenly slamming on the brakes in the third act and announcing that the action movie would now like to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n

By then, it already is.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That doesn’t mean RUNNER ever stops being enormously entertaining. Far from it. Waugh knows exactly what kind of movie he’s making and delivers the goods with gusto. The crashes crunch. The punches hurt. The fights have weight. The humor lands. The ticking clock tightens. And one particularly ambitious vehicular sequence is a technical delight, moving fluidly through and around the action in a way that puts us inside the chase rather than safely observing it from the curb.<\/p>\n

But the technical prowess isn’t what stays with you.<\/p>\n

The people do.<\/p>\n

Hank and Ben do.<\/p>\n

Ellie does.<\/p>\n

And that’s what makes RUNNER something more than a well-executed action thriller.<\/p>\n

There is an unexpected tenderness running beneath all that testosterone and twisted metal\u2014a film about friendship, sacrifice, and what we’re willing to endure for another human being, including one we may barely know. It understands that heroism doesn’t necessarily arrive fully formed. Sometimes it develops mile by mile, conversation by conversation, choice by choice.<\/p>\n

Sometimes two people have to meet in the middle.<\/p>\n

And sometimes, when they do, they become something neither could have been alone.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Scott Waugh has delivered one of the most emotionally satisfying films of his career without sacrificing one ounce of the muscular action filmmaking at which he excels. RUNNER is exciting, funny, visually impressive, beautifully paced and unexpectedly moving, with a terrific Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson pairing that I sincerely hope someone finds an excuse to put together again.<\/p>\n

I laughed.\u00a0\u00a0I cheered.\u00a0\u00a0I held my breath.\u00a0\u00a0And damned if Scott Waugh didn’t make me cry.<\/p>\n

Now that’s one hell of a RUNNER.<\/p>\n
